I would say this again as I said it in the SmallRig comment sections: 1. It's a hit or miss, there's a bunch of tripods that has quality control issues. My first order, one of the legs did not go down. my second order, two of the legs did not go down. 2. The handle wobbles and SmallRig says they upgraded it with a new version, how would you know yours is the upgraded version? SmallRig has not given any guidance. 3. The tripod's hype is in setting it up, you still have to fold all 3 legs to the center to close it down. 4. There is a quality control issue with the legs, once liquid or sand gets in, the legs get stuck. 5. This tripod does not have a bowl head, you need to purchase a bowl head on top of that $800 price tag. 6. Since there's no bowl head, your option is to level the tripod while holding all that weight on the rig/tripod head. Not the easiest thing to do. 7. The tripod is not friendly/does not work with tripod wheels. 8. Yes, the legs dont lock into place. If you pack this tripod with other gear like lightstand, the legs just move from all the wobbling inside a lightstand/tripod bag 9. When you pan the tripod, the center column pans with the head... Hoping they can improve things with version 2.
I don't understand the point #3. Of course you need to fold them, what's the issue here? Why wouldn't the clutch mechanism work the same when closing? It's just as easy as in any other tripod - grab the legs together and push the top part towards the ground or just turn it upside down and let gravity do its job. And bowl heads have a completely different purpose than pan-and-tilts - saying you NEED to buy one is ridiculous. This is the easiest way to set a pan-and-tilt, way easier than in a regular tripod. Ball heads are not an alternative.

If you squeeze the clutch and just press down on the tripod you actually cause flexing and stress on the legs causing dmage to the structurale integrety of the legs, keep in mind they are carbon fiber and the locking mechanism is all stored inside, why would you wish to stress and damage that?
did yours come with the orange handle? this is the first batch that released. These where made while Gene himself made a video stating that they where almost like a first batch beta testing in mind. The ones in all black are the current "Production" models. the Orange ones where the first batch for testing and feed back. They should have informed you of this.
It adds to the value of his opinion. Instead of product manufacturers being weary of what he might say, the value of people's trust in Gerald is far more of an asset to SmallRig. They make great stuff so it was not a big gamble.
I've been using mine for about a month and I like it. I think you nailed the 'oddities' with the clutch not keeping the legs from extending. Another is that the clutch doesn't have a locking position all the way folded in. You can lock it out, or slightly in, but not all the way in. Overall, I really like it and I'd buy it again but for the price I can't recommend it with a straight face to anyone.
So here's a question... What's a tripod that you would say rivals the Tribex in terms of how good you think it is (speed, weight, design, price etc)... and what's the price?

Honestly, in the world of tripods, it's been forever since there's been any innovation. The Flowtech is probably the last time I can remember being excited about a tripod. And that was when? All the way back in 2017? And of course it's an awesome tool in terms of not just quality and durability, but speed. But it's also big, heavy and expensive. Travel with that thing flat out sucks. It's amazing to see that there's finally something new. The Tribex ticks a ton of boxes. My favourite tripods in this category have been the ifootage ones... but the one design flaw for them (and many other similar tripods) is that the head can unscrew on a whip pan. The Tribex apparently has a locking system which prohibits that. Wish you would've checked that out. For run and gun filming where quick set ups are crucial or if you're a one man crew, not having to extend and adjust 3 individual legs is HUGE. If the durability and quality is there, then this is an absolute winner IMO. Looking fwd to not having to lug out my Flowtech all the time
I've been saying for years that I want a tripod like this, for CES! Squeeze or twist a thing, and all legs go floppy. Release, and they lock. But I wasn't sure if there would be a market for such a thing. Guess there is!
I really appreciate the transparency at the beginning of the video! I think I saw this tripod showcased by PotatoJet at a convention at some point and thought that, if I needed a tripod, this should be the one to get for me. I just hate adjusting the legs of a tripod individually, so I do most of my work handheld, with a monopod or a gimbal.
I got one and use it to shoot around the house. The time value alone vs my other tripods will pay for itself over the years. I thought squeezing the clutch would make the legs extend effortlessly, but as Gerald shows, you have to jerk up on the tripod slightly to get the legs to come out sometimes. I do worry about the clutch system when I expose this thing to water and sand. We shall see.
Totally agree, and learned about the Manfrotto/ DJI RS from this video. The clutch we have been getting used to, but you are right that intuitively waiting for the locking lag is strange. When I do it I forget 8 of 10 times. Some of the other folks forget it much less. I am not sure why, but the Flowtech feet, but even the Benro tripod feet feel much better. While it is not perfect, I have been grabbing this more often than I expected in the studio. Thanks for another great one Gerald!

Ive had the earlier batch origin (orange handle) one for a while. Regarding the clutch, ive never had much issue with the delay but thats because i never press it all the way down. It has a distinct threshold where it lets go so if you just squeeze past that threshold and let go to lock it locks quite quickly. Interesting that they changed the center post lock, I cant quite grasp whats happening with the knob you're showing and why it makes a grinding sound. Mine has a flip lock with a little latch lock thats a little weak but its ok, not my favorite but it works fine. I do think people miss the fact that this is the only tripod in the world that deploys and levels this fast which justifies the price tag in my mind. Normally I'm very skeptical about the value of creator collabs but Gene has been super responsive and thoughtful about creating and improving the totally unique new design. Did you check the pan head fluid adjustment? The leg design is pretty revolutionary but my biggest issue with the tripod is that issue with the head. Mine has an almost 90deg dead zone on the pan drag ring where you cant adjust drag without turning the pan fluid knob a full 90deg before it starts actually changing the drag in either direction. I really want to know if they fixed that in the newer batch.
The new version have a diff center column lock actually. So I tink Gerald got the prototype. I ended getting two version. This all black version looks like prototype and there is another newer one with orange accent to it.

This would be a nice tripod for shooting real estate and architecture if it didn't have the video head. Hope SR considers offering just the legs and center column with 3/8 stud for those of us that don't need video head.
I am thinking the same! also, I prefer a 3 way geared head over a video head, even for video work. If I use a tripod its usual for static shots - and a geared head is much easier to level than a video fluid head.

I would have loved to see an example of the pan and tilt smoothness. I know you said this video isn't a review (although you actual review quite some features), but still - no point in showing all those details if the pan and tilt are jittery.

Hopefully a Tripd manufacturer reads this: We still have to buy weird socks or tennis balls for the tripods when we are filming on expensive floors. I hope instead of spikes that i never need i will get solutions for expensive floors with the tripods. tennis balls are amazing, the sock stuff is horrible :D
Same here, that little bit of lag after releasing the clutch is definitely counterintuitive and takes some getting used to. Mine nearly toppled over a couple of times because of that lol But in the end this is a very convenient tripod of excellent build quality at a not cheap but fair price. Being able to quickly adjust all three legs with one hand saves soooooo much time and effort one could argue it's priceless.
I got a OG beta model at launch and the center column lock on mine is a lever, not a ratchet knob. It's incredibly stiff to operate and raising/lowering the column is stiff as well. I guess that was a common complaint so the ratchet lock was a fix, though that would drive me nuts just looking at it
I have one of the original manufactured version (orange handle). I bought this the moment it became available to buy on B&H. This tripod makes setting up and centering any camera a VERY QUICK PROCESS!
I had it for a bit but couldn't agree with not being able to level the head without adjusting the legs. It's fast but that loss of control was a dealbreaker for me. That said the mechanicm is fantastic and I hope they release it with a 75mm bowl option in the future.
What a great review and a great product. What’s even BETTER though is the fact that the next one, the Mk II, will be so more improved cuz they’re getting aaalllll this amazing, detailed feedback from all these UA-camrs so they can go back to engineering with a list of stuff to consider.

Interesting point about the knob! I got the chance to test this out when Gene was in HK a few months ago and I felt like the knob was good to secure the center column for heavier setups. To me it felt like one of those things you get used to after a few uses.
I have a Flowtech (one) and for my B camera I use the iFootage tripod. My experience with more tripods is nothing is as strong as iFootage gear. I like SmallRig gear but don't need another tripod right now. IF I had a product I pay Gerald to review it as well!
On paper it's a dream come true, but it's not for me. If it there was a 100mm bowl version, with taller legs (that centre post is unusable for any camera heavier than an FX6) and a more robust release handle (it looks like it could easily get knocked and brake), I'd be all in.
Very cool. The lack of oddities and little niggles with how this PJ tripod works is why the expensive industry staples are worth their higher price. If Smallrig can figure some of that out while still WAY undercutting the price, then they'll have a true winner.
Any chance you’re going to get camera Canada to loan you an r1. Dual base iso of 12800, oversmapled 4k up to 60 fps. 4k 120 not baked into 30 like the r3 was. It’s probably the best and most underrated video camera on the market but really curious to see you do a dynamic range test etc in clot 2. I think you’d like it, it’s like an a7siii but better. Hope you decide to, not many reviews out there on it. Thanks
I don't remember the last time I used a tripod. I love shooting car shows and concerts. Im also primarily photography, next to no video, so obviously this product isn't geared for my use case.... but suddenly I want one anyway! Great review, 100% transparent as a good review should be
One issue I have with this style of tripod compared to a flowtech is that the footprint changes. Often times when I am trying to get lower I cannot just push down because the legs have to come in, which is hard because of the rubber feet. The flowtech does not have this issue because the feet are always on the same spot on the ground no matter the height.
Looks very nice, but I rarely use a tripod and the Gitzo's I bought back in the 70's when I was working in a camera store (Totolux and Studex Compact Performance) do everything I need and though not nearly as versatile, will probably still be usable a hundred years from now.
Hey Gerald. Can you do a video comparing the video quality of cameras that started it all like the Canon 5Dmk2 versus what you consider your latest and greatest? Maybe do a side by side so we can see how far the video quality has improved in terms of dynamic range, color, details, sharpness etc.
Mine arrived yesterday! it is good but I have a few gripes the handle doesn't lock in its stow away position the legs need to be a little thicker or thicker carbon fibre, they don't fill me with confidence as they don't feel strong for £799 there is a small lag once you release the handle for it to lock(I'm sure ill get used to that) those minor complaints aside I am looking forward to using it on the weekend for my livestreaming
It’s cute, and a smart concept, but until they make a version with a universal bowl so users can put real heads on it, it’s not a product professionals will buy.
I just used this with a fully built rig in NYC shooting across ~ 5 miles and it saved my ass with weight, setup time and adjustment I have it overloaded too. I wouldn't write this thing off
@ fair enough. As a working professional I’d use it as a lock down, but in that case I don’t need something that has this functionality. This would make a great set of main sticks but the head is the bottleneck here.
I think your definition of professional may need to be updated. There are a lot of different shooting scenarios. Many times traveling light is critical. I’m a 30-year professional and own 100mm and 75mm bowl tripods. I’ve been through C400, C200, C70 and now use an FX3/FX30 combo. The kind of shoots I do rarely use tripods. Sometimes a lockdown streaming shot - which a lighter tripod is completely adequate for. For interviews I use a gimbal either handheld propped on my waist or on a monopod. Faster adjustment, quicker setup, can move mid-sentence, less intimidating, and easier to get straight eye-line. So I travel with a really light tripod. Even smaller than this so I can get it in carry-on luggage.
I just looked for it on Amazon to take advantage of the Black Friday deals and I was disappointed to see the outstanding opinions of people who bought it.
I liké how quick this tripod is to set up. That alone makes me interested. I also like that it has a Manfrotto plate so I can switch cameras between this and my old tripods. I'm looking forward to trying it out once they get it into my camera store in Sweden.
4:00 this Limited edition (the first 1000 batch) had a different System. It was a kinda big lewer you had to pull up to unlock. pull down to secure it. Don't know why they changed this. It works well on my Triex so far.
they must've taken some of your feedback - I got mine and the center column lock is different than the knob you have pictured here - mine's more of a latch which, to me, feels very secure and I'm definitely not worried about grinding the teeth of the knob variants.
I‘m currently also testing one for a review (founders edition), and it has some differences, for example the head is a bit worse than the one you got but the center column lock seems to be more intuitive. I totally agree with the rest if you points you mentioned. I would like to add, that the tripod doesn’t seem to be made for the outdoors as it cannot be serviced ant smallrig warns you to not use it in a dirty environment.

The ball and bowl system has nothing to do with the legs. The clutch combines both. Test how long it takes to set up a regular tripod... extend all the legs then level with the bowl head. Now imagine doing all that in one move. But you're right, the big question is quality and durability. If it's there, then this is a homerun
It would be perfect if it was 1.9m/ 6.3feet tall (or 75inch if you want) ... I never buy a tripod that's shorter than this. Not only because i use them on weddings but in most scenarios i have to be almost over people.
The strength of that center column to bear the weight of a heavy setup does not mean it can hold it steadily, without a lot of vibrations or camera movement.
Can the clutch be tightened in the future? It seems that the tripod is held with friction and pressure of that mechanism, which I imagine will loosen up with time and use.
I cancelled my order. To be honest, it wasn’t was good as I expected. I tried this at small rig booth at an expo. , but the extending pole on top of it was flimsy and definitely don’t wanna put an expensive gear on there. Collapsing it down for lower height was a bit too stiff and not as smooth as Flowtech. Anyone else tried this and felt the same?
A very interesting feature with the leg extension, wondering how it will stand up in the field with wear and tear but IMO this is not a professional tripod, we level the camera from the head and not the legs. Also that head is not acceptable in a professional environment . For almost the same price, I would get a Sachtler Ace and it would also hold it's resale value if you wanted to upgrade.
If you are anywhere near sand or dirt, these legs will start to act sluggish or not move at all, and you'll just have to pull them down like an old tripod anyway. I'll wait for V2. Potato Jet is awesome, but this isn't ready for my own use. Love the idea. :)
I find I’m using tripods rarely for the kind of shoots I do. And getting it in a carry-on greatly improves my travel life for the times I need one. The clutch system is cool, but what really interests me is the tripod head. I’ve found lightweight heads lacking in features/adjustability - no counter-balance or non-adjustable counter balance. I’m hoping they make this head available on its own.
The delay on the clutch will be much harder to deal with when you have a 10-15lb camera package on there. If you let go with your hand, or loosen your grip, it makes it much less stable.I would have liked to see Jared show this with a larger camera package on there.
11:26 I have the v1 of the Tripod (0328/1000) and on my Model it's kinda hard to pull them out. Yes, it is possible, but it's not as easy as seen in the video and after around 5cm it kinda stops by itself. I Don't think this is a bigg problem as I don't think this can happen by accident.
I just bought one of these - two questions: Does your fluid head work on pan? Mine seems to only work on tilt. Also on yours does the two spirit levels match up - each is different - which is also odd and makes me wonder if both are wrong or only one.

Interesting that they changed the center post lock, I cant quite grasp whats happening with the knob you're showing and why it makes a grinding sound. Mine has a flip lock with a little latch lock thats a little weak but its ok, not my favorite but it works fine.
I do think people miss the fact that this is the only tripod in the world that deploys and levels this fast which justifies the price tag in my mind. Normally I'm very skeptical about the value of creator collabs but Gene has been super responsive and thoughtful about creating and improving the totally unique new design.
Did you check the pan head fluid adjustment? The leg design is pretty revolutionary but my biggest issue with the tripod is that issue with the head. Mine has an almost 90deg dead zone on the pan drag ring where you cant adjust drag without turning the pan fluid knob a full 90deg before it starts actually changing the drag in either direction. I really want to know if they fixed that in the newer batch.
The new version have a diff center column lock actually. So I tink Gerald got the prototype. I ended getting two version. This all black version looks like prototype and there is another newer one with orange accent to it.
it's the other way around; the orange one was the limited edition, and the black one was the release version.

This would be a nice tripod for shooting real estate and architecture if it didn't have the video head.
Hope SR considers offering just the legs and center column with 3/8 stud for those of us that don't need video head.
I am thinking the same! also, I prefer a 3 way geared head over a video head, even for video work. If I use a tripod its usual for static shots - and a geared head is much easier to level than a video fluid head.
When they bring out a version without the head I'd get one immediately.

I would have loved to see an example of the pan and tilt smoothness. I know you said this video isn't a review (although you actual review quite some features), but still - no point in showing all those details if the pan and tilt are jittery.
It's okay to a point. It's not for smooth, gentle pans on a 200mm.

Hopefully a Tripd manufacturer reads this: We still have to buy weird socks or tennis balls for the tripods when we are filming on expensive floors. I hope instead of spikes that i never need i will get solutions for expensive floors with the tripods. tennis balls are amazing, the sock stuff is horrible :D
Same here, that little bit of lag after releasing the clutch is definitely counterintuitive and takes some getting used to. Mine nearly toppled over a couple of times because of that lol But in the end this is a very convenient tripod of excellent build quality at a not cheap but fair price. Being able to quickly adjust all three legs with one hand saves soooooo much time and effort one could argue it's priceless.
I got a OG beta model at launch and the center column lock on mine is a lever, not a ratchet knob. It's incredibly stiff to operate and raising/lowering the column is stiff as well. I guess that was a common complaint so the ratchet lock was a fix, though that would drive me nuts just looking at it
I have one of the original manufactured version (orange handle). I bought this the moment it became available to buy on B&H. This tripod makes setting up and centering any camera a VERY QUICK PROCESS!

After watching this video, I bought a Sachtler FlowTech 75 with an Activ8 head from B&H and now I am so happy!
I had it for a bit but couldn't agree with not being able to level the head without adjusting the legs. It's fast but that loss of control was a dealbreaker for me. That said the mechanicm is fantastic and I hope they release it with a 75mm bowl option in the future.

Interesting point about the knob! I got the chance to test this out when Gene was in HK a few months ago and I felt like the knob was good to secure the center column for heavier setups. To me it felt like one of those things you get used to after a few uses.

I have a Flowtech (one) and for my B camera I use the iFootage tripod. My experience with more tripods is nothing is as strong as iFootage gear. I like SmallRig gear but don't need another tripod right now. IF I had a product I pay Gerald to review it as well!

On paper it's a dream come true, but it's not for me. If it there was a 100mm bowl version, with taller legs (that centre post is unusable for any camera heavier than an FX6) and a more robust release handle (it looks like it could easily get knocked and brake), I'd be all in.
Very cool. The lack of oddities and little niggles with how this PJ tripod works is why the expensive industry staples are worth their higher price. If Smallrig can figure some of that out while still WAY undercutting the price, then they'll have a true winner.

Any chance you’re going to get camera Canada to loan you an r1. Dual base iso of 12800, oversmapled 4k up to 60 fps. 4k 120 not baked into 30 like the r3 was. It’s probably the best and most underrated video camera on the market but really curious to see you do a dynamic range test etc in clot 2. I think you’d like it, it’s like an a7siii but better. Is the quiest way to put it away to turn it upsidedown and squeeze the handle?
This tripod is the real game changer (at least for wedding videography) this year.
One issue I have with this style of tripod compared to a flowtech is that the footprint changes. Often times when I am trying to get lower I cannot just push down because the legs have to come in, which is hard because of the rubber feet.
The flowtech does not have this issue because the feet are always on the same spot on the ground no matter the height.
Looks very nice, but I rarely use a tripod and the Gitzo's I bought back in the 70's when I was working in a camera store (Totolux and Studex Compact Performance) do everything I need and though not nearly as versatile, will probably still be usable a hundred years from now.
Hey Gerald. Can you do a video comparing the video quality of cameras that started it all like the Canon 5Dmk2 versus what you consider your latest and greatest? Maybe do a side by side so we can see how far the video quality has improved in terms of dynamic range, color, details, sharpness etc.
Mine arrived yesterday! it is good but I have a few gripes
the handle doesn't lock in its stow away position
the legs need to be a little thicker or thicker carbon fibre, they don't fill me with confidence as they don't feel strong for £799
there is a small lag once you release the handle for it to lock(I'm sure ill get used to that)
those minor complaints aside I am looking forward to using it on the weekend for my livestreaming

"Professionals" is not one group of people that shoot a certain way. Plenty of full time working pros are going to buy this.
@ fair enough. As a working professional I’d use it as a lock down, but in that case I don’t need something that has this functionality. This would make a great set of main sticks but the head is the bottleneck here.
I think your definition of professional may need to be updated. There are a lot of different shooting scenarios. Many times traveling light is critical. I’m a 30-year professional and own 100mm and 75mm bowl tripods. I’ve been through C400, C200, C70 and now use an FX3/FX30 combo. The kind of shoots I do rarely use tripods. Sometimes a lockdown streaming shot - which a lighter tripod is completely adequate for. For interviews I use a gimbal either handheld propped on my waist or on a monopod. Faster adjustment, quicker setup, can move mid-sentence, less intimidating, and easier to get straight eye-line. So I travel with a really light tripod. Even smaller than this so I can get it in carry-on luggage.
Possible to set it up for top down shots like Manfrotto tripods? 🤔

I just looked for it on Amazon to take advantage of the Black Friday deals and I was disappointed to see the outstanding opinions of people who bought it.
I liké how quick this tripod is to set up. That alone makes me interested. I also like that it has a Manfrotto plate so I can switch cameras between this and my old tripods. I'm looking forward to trying it out once they get it into my camera store in Sweden.
4:00 this Limited edition (the first 1000 batch) had a different System. It was a kinda big lewer you had to pull up to unlock. pull down to secure it. Don't know why they changed this. It works well on my Triex so far.

they must've taken some of your feedback - I got mine and the center column lock is different than the knob you have pictured here - mine's more of a latch which, to me, feels very secure and I'm definitely not worried about grinding the teeth of the knob variants.
I‘m currently also testing one for a review (founders edition), and it has some differences, for example the head is a bit worse than the one you got but the center column lock seems to be more intuitive. I totally agree with the rest if you points you mentioned. I would like to add, that the tripod doesn’t seem to be made for the outdoors as it cannot be serviced ant smallrig warns you to not use it in a dirty environment.

Gotta ask, how long will the clutch mechanism last? The ball & bowl system has been around for ever and is built to last.
The ball and bowl system has nothing to do with the legs. The clutch combines both. Test how long it takes to set up a regular tripod... extend all the legs then level with the bowl head. Now imagine doing all that in one move. But you're right, the big question is quality and durability. If it's there, then this is a homerun

It would be perfect if it was 1.9m/ 6.3feet tall (or 75inch if you want) ... I never buy a tripod that's shorter than this. Not only because i use them on weddings but in most scenarios i have to be almost over people.
The strength of that center column to bear the weight of a heavy setup does not mean it can hold it steadily, without a lot of vibrations or camera movement.

Can the clutch be tightened in the future? It seems that the tripod is held with friction and pressure of that mechanism, which I imagine will loosen up with time and use.
Nope, looks like the clutch will wear out over time.
I cancelled my order. To be honest, it wasn’t was good as I expected. I tried this at small rig booth at an expo. , but the extending pole on top of it was flimsy and definitely don’t wanna put an expensive gear on there. Collapsing it down for lower height was a bit too stiff and not as smooth as Flowtech.
Anyone else tried this and felt the same?
A very interesting feature with the leg extension, wondering how it will stand up in the field with wear and tear but IMO this is not a professional tripod, we level the camera from the head and not the legs. Also that head is not acceptable in a professional environment . For almost the same price, I would get a Sachtler Ace and it would also hold it's resale value if you wanted to upgrade.

I think that the clutch mechanism is hydraulic, not the legs.
It's the same thing the transformers use
If you are anywhere near sand or dirt, these legs will start to act sluggish or not move at all, and you'll just have to pull them down like an old tripod anyway. I'll wait for V2. Potato Jet is awesome, but this isn't ready for my own use. Love the idea. :)
I've read from other forum that it has QC issues with the hardware after few uses. I hope they improve it.
I find I’m using tripods rarely for the kind of shoots I do. And getting it in a carry-on greatly improves my travel life for the times I need one. The clutch system is cool, but what really interests me is the tripod head. I’ve found lightweight heads lacking in features/adjustability - no counter-balance or non-adjustable counter balance. I’m hoping they make this head available on its own.

The delay on the clutch will be much harder to deal with when you have a 10-15lb camera package on there. If you let go with your hand, or loosen your grip, it makes it much less stable.I would have liked to see Jared show this with a larger camera package on there.
11:26 I have the v1 of the Tripod (0328/1000) and on my Model it's kinda hard to pull them out. Yes, it is possible, but it's not as easy as seen in the video and after around 5cm it kinda stops by itself. I Don't think this is a bigg problem as I don't think this can happen by accident.

I just bought one of these - two questions: Does your fluid head work on pan? Mine seems to only work on tilt. Also on yours does the two spirit levels match up - each is different - which is also odd and makes me wonder if both are wrong or only one.

I think it would have been better to forgo the center column and just add more height to the legs, even at the cost of weight. Maybe also a spreader.
