  • Gear and Beer Thursdays. In this video, I'll demonstrate how to set up a 5:1 mechanical advantage for recovering your motorcycle out of a steep ravine or really anywhere you need a little extra help getting out of a bad situation. Ill also give you my honest opinion if this is a practical solution for recovering your bike.

      Sherman Jenne no doubt the tool works and can get you out of some jams. One thing I noticed was just that with one person, it’s harder than I expected it to be, but is definitely a useful tool. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching

    When you’re alone, it seems like you would end up dragging the bike in many situations. And that would be even more difficult. On the big adventure bike, I definitely pick and choose my battles carefully when I’m alone.

    Great video! I have a similar setup that I put together myself using my older rock climbing gear. One thing I have on my rig that I see you didn’t is a second prusik on the inward side of the last pulley. This creates an auto brake so if you were to let go of the rope, the bike would not roll backwards.
    Give it a try and see what you think.🤙🏽

    Good review mate. I mostly ride alone same as Sherman I would not go with out my kit. I have had to use mine twice, once to recover a Super Tenere from down a bank it took me 4 hours on my own slowly winching at up. Very useful bit of kit if you ride in remote areas alone.

      +Jimmy Patchett Thanks Jimmy. I have no doubt that the tool is useful and can recover your bike if it is in a situation that’s impossible to get out. In that instance who cares if you have to drag it on its side or backwards or anything else right? Let’s just get it out and go home lol. I just noticed that if you were trying to keep the bike up right on your own it’s more difficult than I figured it would be. And as I said with two people it would be extremely easy and very useful

    You said a couple times you wouldn't recommend it for your "only recovery system"... curious if that implies you have other recovery methods you use by yourself?

    As a primarily solo rider I LOVE this type of guidance. My bike is only 300 lbs, but if I launch into a bog, I could be screwed and this tech and tactic could save me. If I am alone, (cold, wet, tired, night falling, whimpering) could I create a crude skid and lay the bike on its slide to make this a one man/gal show? Not optimal I know, but a few saplings and some rock straps and my bike could be a lot easier to pull up the hill on a stretcher because I dont need to keep it up right. I’ve had several IPAs, let me know if I’ve lost it here 😎

    • @backcountryadvmoto
      @backcountryadvmoto  4 роки тому +1

      +Jack Welch for sure! Dont get me wrong, in an actually scenario where you have to get out. Screw the bike, lay that baby down and drag that thing. 😂 For this video and demonstration, I just wanted to show that obviously on the wheels it will roll easier, but not as easy as I though. It’s a usefully tool, but would be even better to be used with a buddy. Also, Beat Rest doesn’t claim that this is a one may show, but it can be used if you had too. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

    I carry a system I constructed out of retired Rope Rescue gear. Works awesome on the smaller bikes, like my 690. I guess on a larger bike it is better than nothing.

    I’m 60 and ride a R1200GSA so I carry a Warn X11 winch. I’ve used it to pull my bike out of creeks and heavy brush by myself. Just sit on the bike or walk beside it. It really is a shame that Warn didn’t market it very well because it works great!

    • @backcountryadvmoto

      That’s awesome! Those little winches are almost impossible to find now. Ever since they discontinued them people who do have them don’t give them up. Wish I could get my hands on one.

  • @D.E.X

    A munter hitch off a short strap larks footed to something to the back of the bike like a topcase rack, pillion footpeg, or pillion handholds keeps the bike from being able to roll back if you lose your footing. Its a knot used for belaying in rock climbing. A pusik locks better, but I find it to be a pain unlocking, taking up slack, locking, getting a new grip, unlock, pull, lock reposition, rinse and repeat. A jumar ascender is the best, but comparatively expensive and bulky. Both the pusik and jamar let you walk away half way done, but with the munter you can just tie off the end. And, as unclear as that all was, the munter goes on the rope end you are pulling to move the bike :-)

  • @northidrecluse2306
    @northidrecluse2306 10 місяців тому

    Two person job for sure. I know Prussik knots, how are you going to work the hand controls and slide a Prussik knot at the same time? Also, from the title I assumed you were referring to something that would recover a downed bike, off the side of the road. I don’t think I need this product, but thanks for the review.

    Bought mine from David over at Best Rest at least five years ago but because of the weight I have not been anxious to carry it and needless to say I’ve never used it either. Thanks for making this video 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
    Your video demonstrates just one of the scenarios that I’ve envisioned but mostly I’m more concerned with dropping that big ass GSA in some weird position wedged amongst some rocks, trees, or has slid into a ditch that makes it even difficult for two people.
    So far I can’t help but view it as a spare tire of sorts (if I could use that as an analogy), one that you want/need to carry but takes up too much needed space for some other tool that is likely to be needed more often than not.

    • @backcountryadvmoto
      @backcountryadvmoto  4 роки тому

      +sumporfuk yep exactly. For me if I know I will be riding somewhere that has steep drop off or something like that where I need to carry it, I probably would, but it it bulky and takes up a lot of room.

    • @backcountryadvmoto
      @backcountryadvmoto  4 роки тому +1

      +Dual Sport Wv For sure. As I’ve mentioned in the video and in a few other comments and maybe it didn’t come across right in the video, but I know that the tool is useful, just if I wanted to keep the bike upright then it’s way more difficult to manipulate that I thought it would be. If it needed to get out of a ravine or spit that was impossible with out a winch, then this wouldn’t come in handy. My main point was that with two people, it would be a game changer.

    How about adding one or two more pulley I mean the rope is what takes most of the space/weight anyway. If you take this there is no reason to add pulley that take very little extra weight.

    • @rhampy82
      @rhampy82 4 роки тому +2

      @IDHPI it doesn't quite work that way. the more pulley's you add the more rope you would have to add as well, or you would have to reset even more often. Basically with a 5 to 1 setup, every 5ft of rope is going to move you 1ft and a 3 to 1 is every 3ft of rope will move you 1ft but you are also pulling more of the weight.

    Hey. Thanks for doing this. I had been curious how that thing works. Not to hijack, but I wondered about your use of knobs on your windscreen. I've considered the same on my AT so I can hot-swap to my touring screen without wanting to murder the designers of the fairing. Do you find they are worth it, and do they add obnoxious wind noise? I'm over in Spokane, if you're ever looking for local to ride with.

      +paul vander haegen That’s a good question. If you can find anything that’s sturdy to bury about a foot and a half the sand And get your rope as close to 90° to the ground as possible you could damn near pull a truck out with that.
