- I think Viv is becoming the hardest guitarist I have tried to emulate with some of his incredibly speedy legato licks. I was wanting to do this for a long time and I had to keep coming back when my left hand had built up more strength. Sublime song! Certainly what I think is the best of the Viv era and it was such a joy to re-learn and play along to this live version. From the excellent broadcast of the bands performance at KOKUSAI INTERNATIONAL FORUM in Tokyo. Viv's solo is killer and I love getting a chance to play the outro rhythm too! :)

Viv was badly under utilized in an effort to stay on the Def Leppard formula. One can only be left to imagine what could have been had he been truly unleashed. Love Def Leppard, but definitely think he should have been allowed to bring more to the table- there’s certainly no ego there. The dynamics within a band and the song writing must be very challenging with Leppards standards. Completely agree on this era- Viv was in beast mode these years- bringing us the Rocket Duel and the Love Bites Outtros that left us in awe. Love that you covered this! TY Ben!
Good point. It’s hard to say what could have happened. I’d like to think that they decided to do what was better for the band/record since that was their formula with Steve Clark, they worked in tandem focusing on the result of the song as a hole (punchy choruses, catchy guitar riffs) The guitar work between Vivian and Phil is superb on Euphoria. It’s definitely the album that sold me on Vivian Campbell. In my humble opinion, Euphoria was the logical progression to Hysteria if Adrenaline wouldn’t have happened. I love all their albums. But Euphoria is in my top 3.
@@Tiago_007 I thought Euphoria could have easily followed up Hysteria- It was over processed and very much the same script. Sonically the rawer edges on Slang were badly needed. That rawer edge really comes through in Live performances and where I had hoped they would gravitate, but that’s just me being overly picky. Yes their process was always song first- It just became apparent that when you see what Vivian brings to the table LIVE should have been encouraged a little more in the studio. He’s an absolute savant. One can’t help but wonder what a Clark / Campbell tandem could have done.
@@rugdnit911 Slang was ahead of its time. It would make a great Contemporary Rock album nowadays. I wish they would have explored that direction a bit more. There is some of their best songwriting in there as well. A Clark/Campbell duo? Yes both of them would shine live especially. I do agree that Vivian is capable of more but has remained a bit compromised due to the Def Leppard formula. I’d love to have his holy diver Les Paul for sure.
I think Slang could have been taken a step further in the vein of "Mean Streets" with a dark, more metal guitar-driven focus. Slang was a departure, but they should have driven off the cliff instead of jumping. They admittedly were scared to death of the scene at that point; it would have pleased their pre-'83 fans, and it could have showcased both of them in an equal light.

Something about the live stuff...awesome job again. Toughest thing to do...follow a legend like SC but Viv carved out a niche and has overcome...gotta respect that 🤘🤘🤘🤘👍🍻

Does anyone have a clue as to what happened to this Japanese or Asian guitar covers UA-camr? He had a lot of 80s rock/metal guitar covers but all his videos and channel are gone.
