As a European (Denmark), I would like to thank the US for the excellent support of the brave Ukranien soliders. The West need to stay united under the leadership of the US in NATO. It would be great if Europe would spend more on military force in the future so that the US will not have to carry the whole load. But I believe Putins foolish behaviour has exactly catalyzed this. We've been frustrated how Europe says that we're always involved in Europe and have troops in Europe then when something goes wrong, it seems that it's expected that US troops will come. Trump wanted to cut military in Europe massively to force Europe to defend themselves which was a pretty popular opinion, in the US. I'm glad Europe is finally deciding to defend themselves. Years ago I knew a Russian fellow - Constantin was his name - who had been an engineering student in Russia before the war. He was drafted to build bridges so the Russian Army could move men and equipment to the front to meet the invading Nazis. When the Russians were forced to retreat, he blew up the bridges he'd built. Then he was captured and was made to build bridges for the Germans - or die. When the Germans retreated - he blew up those bridges. Eventually he was recaptured by the Americans - and built bridges for them. I knew him in San Francisco when he was a spry and upbeat old man - he told the above as one long funny story...

You understand when Ukraine blows up bridges in the most contested areas to slow Russia’s concentrated push, but for Russia to be doing the same really indicates they’re losing control of the situation.
The Russians are focusing on gains in the Donbass so Kharkiv will just have to wait. Any attempt by the Ukrainians to threaten Russia supply lines around just North of Kharkiv will be targeted with aerial and artillery bombardment.
To me it looks like the Russians are retreating by somewhat of their choice in eastern Ukraine. They would like to hold that land with limited forces but the Ukrainians are pushing any limited Russian forces out of the east . The Russians are moving these eastern forces to the extreme south . They want the Donbas region and the whole Black Sea coast line all the way to Moldova

1 thing I want to add is that the ukrainians have regained control over the town of Chuhuiv where they can still cross the Severski Donets river, which they did. Chuhuiv also has a military base btw. They also control some villages east of Chuhuiv. From there I think the next major goal is to go to Kupiansk and cut off Russian supply routes to Izyum. Or they can go directly to Izyum and get in behind enemy lines. But Kupiyansk is closer from there. If they can do it (and I think they will), it would cause huge problems for the russians.

The bridge at Staryi Saltiv would have been useful for the Ukrainians as an obvious objective would be to drive west and cut off the Russian supply lines running south to Izium etc. I imagine the Ukrs will aim to cross that river somehow.

I would have thought, that blowing up bridges at retreats would be done by any regular army by default. A bridge could be covered by artillery from some distance, luring an enemy into an ambush. Maybe Russia has no usefull artillery available at the time in that area.

I believe Ukraine's strategy is a bit different. They are well aware that they can't attack and push back Russians everywhere at once. They can very well slow down their advancement and make it very costly, because they fortify every inch of terrain in front of the Russian invasion, and only give ground when their defenses become too damage to hold, from Russian shelling. However, the biggest Russian logistical base, right now, is Belgorod. If they manage to cut off, or at least get within shelling range, of the supply lines south from Belgorod, all Russian troops deployed to Ukraine will suffer. Right now, Belgorod is so densely packed with troops and supplies that five minutes of heavy bombardment of the area could cripple Russia's troops for weeks. For Russia, it will take weeks at least to rerout troops and supplies through some different area more to the South. Worse, by then Ukrainians may have advanced even further and recovered even more terrain in the Donbas, due to the sudden weakening of all Russian troops in Ukraine, to the point that there no longer is a safe land connection between Russia proper and their troops in Southern Ukraine except through the long bridge in Southern Crimeea. (The more Western equipment Ukraine gets, and the faster it gets it, the more likely this scenario becomes.) Once Crimeea remains the only available route for Russian supplies, Russian troops in Ukraine are doomed - that route has very low bandwidth, they can't even get their food rations through there. With several tens of thousands of Russian hostages, Ukraine would have a rather strong position for negotiating a convenient peace. Plus, the Russians isolated in Southern Ukraine may get well include most if not all war criminals that Ukraine wants to put on trial.

Very good commentary. The "special military operation" will already go down as one of the biggest military blunders in recent military history. To want to initiate a coup in Ukraine with about 180,000 soldiers was already crazy. Now to try to hold an area twice the size of Portugal with these exhausted and makeshift troops is also absurd. The Russians will very probably not be able to hold the land connection between the Donbass and the Crimea and thus possibly lose everything. It is simply complete madness to wage war with a few hundred thousand soldiers against several million people. Such plans can really only be thought up in an autocracy, where one person alone is responsible for the brilliant ideas.
Russia is concerned about now being invaded. A march to Moscow by an aligned army (not nato, think more anti Russian govt separatists, Ukraine and smaller soon to be militarized regions). It’s a real risk, Putin is ignoring it, the core Russian military is absolutely concerned.

The Russian forces in Ukraine have been mainly drawn from the Russian hinterland and disproportionately from ethnic minorities within their borders while excluding urban European Russians. They have been excluding troops from its urban centers to hide their losses from the public because trains full of caskets in Moscow and St. Petersburg would be bad PR for the regime. This policy was also used during the Soviet-Afghan War to lessen the impact of that war on the urbanized proletariat and by extension the government and party members. If Russia chooses to fully mobilize for war there's no reason to believe that the majority of those conscripted into service wouldn't also be ethnic minorities so they can protect their core of urban European Russians. If they draw conscripts from their hinterland it's unlikely these sparsely populated areas would be able to find the numbers necessary to organize anti-war protests. Putin knows that too many of his troops are surrendering so he's calculated that if he attacks civilians he will scare his troops into believing that the Ukrainians won't take prisoners. Russia is also sending mobile cremation units to Ukraine so they can hide their losses. Because sending home trainloads of caskets is bad PR for Putin. If Putin has the bodies cremated in the field he can skip registering the dead and list them as missing or captured instead. Since no family wants to believe their sons have been KIA Putin gets to conceal his losses and hold on to his justification for the war in the short term and potentially threaten the families of the dead with reprisal if he lists them as captured. This is why the State Department is warning about concentration camps, mobile cremation units, genocide, biological warfare, and chemical warfare. So there's currently an opportunity for the frozen conflicts in the former Soviet Republics to reignite with the Russian military tied down in Ukraine. So far the former Soviet Republics have been playing a waiting game and anxiously watching the war in Ukraine hoping to exploit a Russian defeat. However, if they wait too long they risk a full Russian mobilization and the Russian military being able to redeploy its forces from that front to reopen these frozen conflicts. They may not have as good an opportunity as they have now.

I think German policies towards Russia were defendable until 2008. There is however certainly no way to justify Germany's positions and actions since 2014, with the most glaring example being signing North Stream 2 in 2015 against outspoken opposition from most if not all eastern partners. In 1990 I believed we would be able to closely integrate all of Europe including Russia (that has its economic base and most of the population in Europe) and dissolve Nato within 20 years. I was wrong. In hindsight there was never really any interest in Russian elites (defined by power, there certainly was in their intellectual elites, but a good part of them just left) to modernize and liberate Russia. They recognized pretty much the moment the Sowjet Union collapsed that it was a chance to make it a pure oligarchy after having had to do all the ideological window dressing for so long. A good outcome was never really an option.
They took the American way of democracy and capitalism and just outdid them on all fronts. But honestly, corruption, oligarchy elite rule, mass exploitation of the other 99.5%, is all present in the US and other western nations, we just love pretending that "our elites and politicians are different". Basically until I see people giving a crap about their own governments, they all can STFU about Russia, Russia, Russia...
I have every confidence in the Ukrainian Army and People to build back that bridge and every other bridge that is needed, quickly, and efficiently. As a European (Denmark), I would like to thank the US for the excellent support of the brave Ukranien soliders. The West need to stay united under the leadership of the US in NATO. To me it looks like the Russians are retreating by somewhat of their choice in eastern Ukraine. They would like to hold that land with limited forces but the Ukrainians are pushing any limited Russian forces out of the east . The Russians are moving these eastern forces to the extreme south . 1 thing I want to add is that the ukrainians have regained control over the town of Chuhuiv where they can still cross the Severski Donets river, which they did. Chuhuiv also has a military base btw. They also control some villages east of Chuhuiv. From there I think the next major goal is to go to Kupiansk and cut off Russian supply routes to Izyum. Or they can go directly to Izyum and get in behind enemy lines. But Kupiyansk is closer from there. If they can do it (and I think they will), it would cause huge problems for the russians.

I believe Ukraine's strategy is a bit different. They are well aware that they can't attack and push back Russians everywhere at once. They can very well slow down their advancement and make it very costly, because they fortify every inch of terrain in front of the Russian invasion, and only give ground when their defenses become too damage to hold, from Russian shelling. However, the biggest Russian logistical base, right now, is Belgorod. If they manage to cut off, or at least get within shelling range, of the supply lines south from Belgorod, all Russian troops deployed to Ukraine will suffer. Right now, Belgorod is so densely packed with troops and supplies that five minutes of heavy bombardment of the area could cripple Russia's troops for weeks. For Russia, it will take weeks at least to rerout troops and supplies through some different area more to the South. Worse, by then Ukrainians may have advanced even further and recovered even more terrain in the Donbas, due to the sudden weakening of all Russian troops in Ukraine, to the point that there no longer is a safe land connection between Russia proper and their troops in Southern Ukraine except through the long bridge in Southern Crimeea. (The more Western equipment Ukraine gets, and the faster it gets it, the more likely this scenario becomes.) Once Crimeea remains the only available route for Russian supplies, Russian troops in Ukraine are doomed - that route has very low bandwidth, they can't even get their food rations through there. With several tens of thousands of Russian hostages, Ukraine would have a rather strong position for negotiating a convenient peace. Plus, the Russians isolated in Southern Ukraine may get well include most if not all war criminals that Ukraine wants to put on trial.

The "special military operation" will already go down as one of the biggest military blunders in recent military history. To want to initiate a coup in Ukraine with about 180,000 soldiers was already crazy. Now to try to hold an area twice the size of Portugal with these exhausted and makeshift troops is also absurd. The Russians will very probably not be able to hold the land connection between the Donbass and the Crimea and thus possibly lose everything. It is simply complete madness to wage war with a few hundred thousand soldiers against several million people. Such plans can really only be thought up in an autocracy, where one person alone is responsible for the brilliant ideas.

Two different fronts
The Russian forces in Ukraine have been mainly drawn from the Russian hinterland and disproportionately from ethnic minorities within their borders while excluding urban European Russians. They have been excluding troops from its urban centers to hide their losses from the public because trains full of caskets in Moscow and St. Petersburg would be bad PR for the regime. This policy was also used during the Soviet-Afghan War to lessen the impact of that war on the urbanized proletariat and by extension the government and party members. If Russia chooses to fully mobilize for war there's no reason to believe that the majority of those conscripted into service wouldn't also be ethnic minorities so they can protect their core of urban European Russians. If they draw conscripts from their hinterland it's unlikely these sparsely populated areas would be able to find the numbers necessary to organize anti-war protests. Putin knows that too many of his troops are surrendering so he's calculated that if he attacks civilians he will scare his troops into believing that the Ukrainians won't take prisoners. Russia is also sending mobile cremation units to Ukraine so they can hide their losses. Because sending home trainloads of caskets is bad PR for Putin. If Putin has the bodies cremated in the field he can skip registering the dead and list them as missing or captured instead. Since no family wants to believe their sons have been KIA Putin gets to conceal his losses and hold on to his justification for the war in the short term and potentially threaten the families of the dead with reprisal if he lists them as captured. This is why the State Department is warning about concentration camps, mobile cremation units, genocide, biological warfare, and chemical warfare. So there's currently an opportunity for the frozen conflicts in the former Soviet Republics to reignite with the Russian military tied down in Ukraine. So far the former Soviet Republics have been playing a waiting game and anxiously watching the war in Ukraine hoping to exploit a Russian defeat. However, if they wait too long they risk a full Russian mobilization and the Russian military being able to redeploy its forces from that front to reopen these frozen conflicts. They may not have as good an opportunity as they have now.

I think German policies towards Russia were defendable until 2008. There is however certainly no way to justify Germany's positions and actions since 2014, with the most glaring example being signing North Stream 2 in 2015 against outspoken opposition from most if not all eastern partners. And it is true that Germany is pretty selective in application of their historic responsibilities. There is a lot of relativity strangely well aligned with economic interests there.
In 1990 I believed we would be able to closely integrate all of Europe including Russia (that has its economic base and most of the population in Europe) and dissolve Nato within 20 years. I was wrong. In hindsight there was never really any interest in Russian elites (defined by power, there certainly was in their intellectual elites, but a good part of them just left) to modernize and liberate Russia. They recognized pretty much the moment the Sowjet Union collapsed that it was a chance to make it a pure oligarchy after having had to do all the ideological window dressing for so long. A good outcome was never really an option.
They took the American way of democracy and capitalism and just outdid them on all fronts.
But honestly, corruption, oligarchy elite rule, mass exploitation of the other 99.5%, is all present in the US and other western nations, we just love pretending that "our elites and politicians are different".
