This is a fly pattern that was created by a famous Sun Valley Idaho fly fishing guide by the name of "Bear Tracks" Williams. When I was 13 years old back in 1970, I had a part time job tying Woolly Worms and Renegades for Ruel Stayner in Twin Falls, Idaho - he had a shop and sold trout flies wholesale. The Renegade was the only fly that Dick Alfs from Ketchum, Idaho (Dick Alf's Fly Shop - now Silver Creek Outfitters) would use on the Salmon River. He told me he "caught fish all day" with it on that water - much to the chagrin of other fisherman and guides. It's a great attractor pattern that is now widely ignored.

One of my favorite flies . One of the first flies I learned to tie . It’s unbelievable how well it fishes …. And yes cutthroat here in Colorado go crazy for it .

I watch a Welshman tie the old patterns. This is the first fore and aft pattern I have seen in years. Did you find it in a book? Ernest Hemingway is one of my favorite author's. I have tied flies for years, but due to my wife's illness I have never had a chance to fish a fly rod. I hope to in the future, but my wife will be in heaven then so it will be a joy mixed with sorrow when I do get to fish some of these flies. All the best, Sean
A very simply tied fly that works wonders for all species of trout and Brook Trout Char. The Renegade was truly one of Hemingway's favorite trout flies, and he never fished trout without it. It was first developed in the early 1900's, like 1905 if I remember correctly, though there's the argument that it was first tied in Idaho, and some say Wyoming. Either way, it was first tied in the Rocky Mountain Range. Fabulous fly to fish with. I always have it with me when fishing the creeks here in Colorado.

Grew up fishing almost nothing but Captains and Renegades. I've had 60 fish days on a single Renegade when I was 12-14 years old. Lots of Cuts and Brookies.

I love these old patterns that hunt. Fly shops don’t carry them and their not in every single new-day pattern book. So the fish don’t see them float past them day in and day out like other patterns. I find it helps a lot on highly pressured water.

Hi goodly, thanks. The hackle on this pattern is stripped on one side, its not for all patterns but some I feel are improved by it! I use a Canon Eos 1D mark lll and normal studio lighting.

do viewers really make a big deal about preferring POV? I've watched bunches of fly tying videos and I can't say I prefer one or the other. just curious. I really enjoy your videos!
Hi Michael, No I don't really think so, but I try and give the less experienced tyer the best possibility to see how each pattern is tied. I know that several left handed tyers prefer the normal way from the back side of the vice! But its for me really, most of the other videos ore from the other side so it makes mine a little different i guess!
i very much prefer a POV.
i think it is easier for me to replicate something when i see how it should look with my eyes. it might seem weird but i get a better understanding when i can see what the professional sees as he sees it.
The male herls are typically whiter than the females of the species......It represents two mating peacock herls....obviously! ;-) Trout instinctively know that they are vunerable when copulating, I have interviewd them etxensively.
