    I bought my first Mac (MacBook Air (M1) 2020) in August. I watched your first 10 things video and followed a lot of them, but I also fumbled my way through everything you just mentioned. I did find your videos a few months ago and have watched, and been helped by many. Thanks for this one and all the others! Since buying my MacBook I've completely changed our home to Apple, Home Pods replaced Echo Mini's, Apple TV on all TVs, etc... After more than 25 years in IT and always hating Mac/Apple many are surprised, but I love it, and your videos are very beneficial!

    Excellent video, but in my view it would be worth saying a bit more about how useful Pages and Numbers can be. As they can instantly open MS Office files and also export documents in that format, I think far more more people could get good use out of them without the additional expense of MS Office. I much prefer Pages to MS Word anyway.

    Awesome video. Some great points about keyboard shortcuts. I'd probably end up remapping copy and paste but like you, I don't use many keyboard shortcuts. How does Firefox factor in between Chrome and Safari?

    Im currently thinking of getting a base model Mac mini as a sort of stepping stone (so that i have a machine that i can use to familiarise myself with Mac OS up until i can get the Mac I actually want to get), and since i will not be fully transitioning over to Mac OS, i will most likely continue to use Firefox, for a few reasons, one is that my bookmarks automatically sync between all computers and tablets, regardless of OS, and there is one particular feature which i use on my current windows PC, HTTPS only mode, which warns me when i try to visit a site that doesn’t support HTTPS
    And before anyone says “why don’t you use a VPN”, if a site doesn’t support HTTPS, then a VPN absolutely will not protect you, as the connection between the VPN server and the site will remain unencrypted
    (there are some things which i need windows for, and i will also be getting a separate linux desktop, so that i am not relying on virtual machines, which could break at any moment due to an OS update)

    I’m a huge fan of all those tips. The only thing I wish about Safari, and I know this isn’t something I will change anytime soon, I’m a dedicated Safari user (for the resource management reasons that you discussed), but I feel like a lot of web apps that I have to use require me to use chrome, or else they don’t work, so I have to keep a copy of chrome on my Mac and run that every time I need to run a web app that doesn’t work with safari. Also in regards to Hey Siri, I do want to differentiate it with the dictation feature. I agree with Marc that Siri isn’t the most useful thing on the Mac, but dictation is hell a useful. A lot of those things get conflated so I just wanted to make sure people realize that they are separate features, and the dictation feature on the Mac is a lot better that on windows, at least as of when I left windows in 2020.

    Very informative video as always, thanks Mark. As for Hey Siri on the Mac, I use it to ask Siri how to spell things, I find it easier to ask by voice rather than trying to type something you really do not have any idea how to spell, so it's good for that.

    I would love to give Safari a go, but the main reason which prevents me from doing that is that I cannot have favicons on the bookmarks bar instead of text. I use this feature in Google Chrome to identify easier the bookmarks and to save space. For this reason, I have continued to use Chrome, through I'd love to use Safari.

    I first moved to Macs after my beloved Toshiba Laptop was stolen whilst on Tour in France. Luckily we were at a City owned venue so I was immediately taken to a FNAC in the City to get a replacement. All the Windows Laptops had Vista!!!!! (Yes, it was that long ago!) and only in French. When the Salesman was asked what he could offer in Mult language he took us over to the Mac area & I became a proud owner of a first gen. aluminium13" Macbook. Plenty of the Touring Party were Macbook owners so I had lots of help to get up and running - they all still had the white plastic Macbooks, so my new Baby was frequently visited!
    To cap it all, after the Tour I simply sent the laptop back to the French venue, they sent me the Money equivalent that a brand new top of the line Toshiba would cost, & with that I got an Apple refurbished 15" Macbook for no cost. Never looked back.

    Probably a silly question, I know, but I bought an m1 mac mini and a mid range LG 4k monitor. I have only two thunderbolt ports, but there's also an hdmi port. Is there anything I'd be missing if I used the hdmi port rather than a thunderbolt port to connect the monitor? I've never seen an explanation of why one mode is better than the other. And yes, the monitor supports both types of connections as well as displayport.

    • @pineappleroad
      @pineappleroad 2 роки тому +1

      There are some benefits to DisplayPort over HDMI, but I personally think the average person is not likely to notice any difference
      I have used both DisplayPort and HDMI on one of my computers, and i could not tell the difference
      Thunderbolt 3/4 uses DisplayPort protocols for video output
      If the HDMI port on the monitor is HDMI 2.0, then you should be fine with using HDMI

    • @zybrogue
      @zybrogue 2 роки тому

      Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. The monitor came with a displayport cable but I'd still need an adapter for the mac end of the connection. The display looks great using hdmi. However, I can't control brightness and sound volume using the controller in the mac os menubar and I was wondering if connecting the monitor using thunderbolt might allow that stuff to work.

    • @pineappleroad
      @pineappleroad 2 роки тому

      @@zybrogue as i do not have a display with a Thunderbolt/USC C input, or access to a computer with Thunderbolt, I can’t say with absolute certainty, but from what i know, its unlikely that the monitor will allow the connected computer to control its brightness and volume
      I know that on windows desktop computers, the display brightness option is not available at all

      Yeah , everything apple if you are not familiar with it is a bit of a shock to the system mate , i bought my first ever apple device , an iphone 12 PM when it was released after ten years of android , and for the first two months i hated it with a passion , and for the first two weeks i just wanted to burn it :) , but i thought i should give it a chance and persevere , and as i learned more about it did eventually warm to it , and it does have some redeeming features , even if i do occasionally miss that android OS on the iphone , i do still have my galaxy note for the other half of the time i need an android fix :) .
      I`m also looking to get some form of mac , be it mac book or imac , or mac mini , i havent made up my mind yet.
      Anyway ,good luck with it bud .

    Mark, As to the Windows keyboard shortcuts, they are mostly backwards. Why do I say ‘backwards’? Back in the day when when Microsoft was developing Windows, to avoid a lawsuit from Apple, they had to use “reverse engineering” when it came to design Windows and the keyboard shortcuts, they had to reverse the keyboard arrangements. So, Apple’s way was the ‘right way’, and Microsoft was the ‘backward way.’ So, when a person comes over to the Mac OS, what they are learning is the RIGHT and ORIGINAL way to use the graphical user interface. Frank

    Man, that’s a bit of a bizarre “tip” to recommend to new Mac users that they should delete the iWork and iLife apps.
    New Macs don’t have critical storage issues. There’s really no incentive to start deleting apps. How/why did this thought even arise?
    How will anyone ever discover how great they can be if they’re deleted?
