Uncanny! I have been on the fence for two months whether to purchase this exact bag, and your video was exactly what I have been looking for. Many thanks and cheers from the States.
I’m glad you came back and did another video with actual practical tips on packing for a short trip but yeah I’m not paying that kind of money for luggage.
Nice one Sir. What a wonderful knitted cardigan/jacket. I have been looking for one of those for ages! As a traditional shaving enthusiast myself, I approve of your travel shave setup. However, I would recommend keeping your brush in cylindrical pill tube. This would greatly help in keeping your brush safe, and also keep things much neater.
I’ve created several lists of travel items based on the type of trip. I have lists of items for domestic, international, marathoning, conferences, etc., trips. I post mine on Google Docs, but of course any online or analog platform would work. Ash, I appreciate all your work on these videos - very instructive and inspiring . Cheers
I'm now a fan of packing cubes for weekend trips to organise and keep clothes crease free. For those on a tighter budget, John Lewis carry several leather weekend bags for less that £200.
Hi Ash. I often travel with work for two day trips and so it was interesting to see what was on your list. I’d personally add the following: - Spare pair of trousers in case you drop your dinner down the first pair or get soaked in the rain (a problem in the UK at this time of year) - Light PJs or T shirt for the nights - A light gortex rain jacket - A collapsable umbrella - A bag / light rucksack that you can carry your bits and pieces / purchases etc. during your walks around the city - Don’t forget your wallet :-) That bag looks lovely - but is rather expensive! I think there are equivalents out there for half the price. Hope you have a great weekend with your son.
Interesting. I don’t do much travelling these days. I used to travel regularly for business, however, and generally overpacked. I always seemed to carry things that never got worn. Having said that, I am going on a weekend trip in two weeks time for a school reunion, so I’ve been putting some thought into what I will take. Good timing for this video. Thanks!
Joking aside, carrying your own bog roll might come in handy if you are travelling by public transport where there stands a good chance of low quality (or missing) paper at an airport/station/train/plane/etc.
Always look for the better solution. I travel with a portable bottle bidet. Better for you, better for the plumbing, better for the planet. Probably a bit outside the scope of this fine channel. But bidets are the way to go. It's just a shame, and a mystery, why Brits and Americans haven't adopted them the way so much of the rest of the world has.
thanks for this, Ash! I rarely do a weekend, but am regularly traveling for 1-4 weeks for work. So I'm in suitcases, using packing cubes, and generally taking a fair bit of tailoring with me :). I'm really glad to hear your thoughts on Carl Friedrik. I have been looking to get one of their Palissey briefcases, but the price is a bit steep. I'm hoping this year is the year I can make it work!
About reading; almost anything by Giles Milton. Currently reading “Winston Churchill’s ministry of Ungentlemanly warfare. Outstanding read. Great for a trip.
Beautiful color! Another great review of a beautiful piece from a company I hope to order from eventually. Still dreaming about that wallet but with no RFDI , I’m hard pressed.
Ash, may I ask what is the jacket you were wearing? It looks well made (and it suits you well). Also, would you recommand a certain razor carrier? Thank you.
It is a shawl collar cardigan by North Sea Clothing. I own 2 and they are amazing in the cooler months. I was gifted the razor carrier, but TOBS and Trumper offer similar products as I recall.
Ash, what do you think of taking a rucksack instead of a holdall? If creasing and wrinkling (and style) is not a major point of concern, it may be an alternative and it keeps your hands free.
For any short trip, I believe in packing light, making multiple use out of a few key pieces of clothing, and avoiding the pitfalls of being burdened with multiple pieces of luggage. I always make sure I have some empty space in my luggage when I leave on a trip, because I know that I will wind up buying something, whether it's an item of clothing, a book, or a small antique of some sort, that I'll have to carry home with me. It took four decades, but I have finally convinced my wife of the benefits of travelling light.
Do you have a favorite hotel to stay in London, Ash? I’ve stayed at the Guardsman next to Buckingham Palace and the Resident in SoHo. I am considering Dukes for my next trip into Mayfair - which many know was a regular haunt of Ian Fleming!
My all time favourite is Claridges, fiercely expensive, but utter class and art deco fantasy. The Dorchester is also no slouch - amazing afternoon cream teas!
I’ve only had the pleasure of dining at Claridges. I’d love to be able to stay there overnight in the future. You’re always a gentleman of great taste, Ash!
Your eminence..why didn't you join your wife here in India!! I would be so much pleased to be your host. thanks again for the wonderful episode by the way.
I always ignore the brand names talked about. Unless it's a very unique item. Im not living by a tight budget by any means, but £700 for that bag is ridiculous. Such a boring bag aswell. Suitable for the bowling alley on a Saturday night in 1976 😂
No sir. No iron, as I assume every hotel I stay in will have some form of ironing resource. I do not take shoe polish unless I'm away for a protracted period.
HOW MUCH??????? I just spat my morning coffee all down myself when you said that. Wowsers. I’m a big fan of yours Ash but i really think you need to stop peddling these ridiculously overpriced items from CR. Find a different sponsor that doesn’t need to add a crazy mark up to their products to compensate for low sales.
The concierge will probably not have a clue about the bag you are carrying. Most people won’t care a hoot., they won’t be educated about such things. They will throw it on the trolley with all the other bags. If it gets damaged they are only obliged to give you a cheap replacement. Owning such quality always ends in disappointment when something goes wrong.

You've covered it well - love the bag. The only thing I might add to that is a minimal sewing kit just in cast you lose a button on your jacket or shirt. You're not looking to do a big repair, but losing that button on the jacket you want to wear to that nice restaurant would not be good.

I agree. The Carl Friedrik compact weekender bag is priced at around $400. I’m sure it’s a nice bag but that’s way beyond my price range.

Same principal really, I just favour the valise for practicality and style reasons (my son took a rucksack on this trip)

Charles Tyrwitt have some excellent items, reasonably priced as well.
Nail clippers, scissors & Swiss Army knife are absolute essentials
Except if you are going by aeroplane with carry-on only, in case you try to perform a hijack using your nail scissors :D

Couldn't agree more. Absolutely essential. I have a couple of different makes for key rings and travel bags.
Why do you need a Swiss Army knife when traveling in a city?

What sort of hotel does not provide bog roll?
What about the portable personalized leather toilet seat (King Charles)?
I think he is suggesting that the bog roll provided is not up to his standards, which is entirely fair
Hmmm, just realizing now I don't have a double-edge razor pouch.

Think i would take a change of trousers too and a like lighter on the shave products
and underpants - I didn't like to say
Nice video, but not one notebook or pen? :)
I took both, but was using my journal for the video notes, so it was not seen in the video.
That bog roll trick is a lesson from a man who has been stuck on a cordon for over 12 hours.
Face wash , facial moisturizer ?
Didn't your Loake boots come with shoe bags?
yes they did, but when traveling light, I only take 1 pair of shoes, and I will be wearing them.
