Great list. I like that you don’t focus on only expensive items.
Style is not a matter of money. Even though money matters. But money should never compensate taste.

I haven't had the opportunity to test the higher end whiskys, but I do love the Wiser's Special Blend straight up with a whisky stone. It's probably the cheapest stuff in the store but it's still my favourite. I do also like the odd swig of Canadian Club as well.

    Flatcap
    Burgundy Penny loafers
Bottle of water as I don't drink alcohol

Good choices sir.. Here's mine: 1) Hat: The 8 panel newsboy (or the 'Peaky Blinder' as it's called today)... 2) Overcoat: Black Wool (long or short P-coat style) .... 3) Jacket: Tweed (Herringbone or Donegal) 3 button with leather sleeve patches... 4) Shirt: Agree with the stark white dress shirt. TOO versatile to not choose. Bonus points if French-cuffed with a smart & simple pair of cufflinks.... 4) Trousers: Agree with the flat-front cotton canvas chino.. either in black, brown or (hard to find) grey... 5) Shoes: Toss up between the plain penny loafer OR a suede oxford (Brogue patterning optional) in some shade of brown (just remember to water proof the material)... 6) Watch: the Pulsar model PF8373 Men's Sports Chronograph... LOVE mine and it didn't break the bank.... 7) Cologne: Bath & Body Works brand called 'Coffee & Whiskey' which also comes in a body wash, body spray, soap and body lotion option. Manly and not over powering.... 7) Gloves: Totes brand smart-touch half leathers in chocolate brown... 8) Accessories (multiple items here): A scarf in either lamb's wool or cashmere (solid or tartan) although I do from time to time 'borrow' a worsted wool sash from my wife's collection (Every kilt I order she insists on getting a sash also... because she loves the 'matchy-matchy' thing when we're out together)... also 9) A Kershaw brand spring-assisted pocket knife with at least a 2 inch blade. The most versatile tool a man can carry... along with a lighter and a small pocket flashlight (or torch as you call it) and 10) Drink: Ole' Smokey brand salted caramel bourbon from Tennessee USA (Goes great with a smooth cigar or pipe tobacco).... I'm also VERY fond of cravat/ascot style neck wear instead of a bow or long tie and sweater vests.... Usually in a smart Argyll or simple cable-link pattern. I guess that's actually more than ten... Oh well

Enjoyed the video. As for myself, I cannot afford a Rolex but I do have a Fossil watch that I’ve had for over 30 years and still going strong. As for the Canadian Club, I prefer Makers Mark. It’s a very smooth Kentucky straight bourbon and I believe if would give it a go you would enjoy it too.

Hello Ash, I really enjoyed your "Dessert island disks" must haves. I certainly went along with most of your choices. Prefer a Fedora over a Trilby but thats about it. Oh and Famous Grouse. All the best sir, Rob.

Rob you beat me to it. I was thinking that, the Dessert Island Disks of Chapdom. Yes Famous Grouse is a good pick for scotch. It is very drinkable and has a lot character. Much prefer to most single malts by a mile.🍻

Hello, my brother from another mother and my cousin across the pond!
I've only recently subscribed to your channel and am really enjoying your content!
Your mention of Alfred Dunhill Edition brought me back 35 years ago when I was a blooming hotel executive with Westin Hotels in Houston TX. The resident manager who always shined on my performance took a 4-month long holiday to London and brought me back a bottle. I've never had so many compliments since. I can't wait to get another bottle and follow it up in the Fall with Floris No 89.
    Thank You!!!

Great topic and video! I agree with everything you touched upon. My only "divergence" would be the Bass Wine Colored Flat Strap Weejun (but not sure how popular the Weejun is in the UK?) and a British IPA.

My things I can't live without are a Damarca Pork Pie hat in wine over a Trilby. Solovair Boots in Oxblood and Solovair Gibsons in Black and Bass Weejuns loafers in wine for the spring and summer. Ben Sherman shirts. Levi Vintage Sta-Prest trousers and Farah vintage frog mouth trousers over chinos any day of the week. Sevledge jeans. I do like cardigans as well. I love to wear Dior fahrenheit or Bently. Not fussed at all by watches and I'm tea total😅

Hi, Ash! Thanks for this- an interesting video for sure! I'm in the fedora camp, although I've started to experiment with flat caps as well, but think the fedora will be my one to go with for hats. For coats I'd likely go with an overcoat, but I live in Canada, where you really need something that works in winter. I go without scents as my wife gets migraines from perfumes (as does one of my sons), so no scents here, but I would replace with an unscented body lotion with SPF. For shoes, I might go with a chelsea boot as I love them, and they can go with suits in a pinch as well as a brogue. My watches are less refined than yours, and I wear a simple Timex every day because it's waterproof, so I don't need to think about it when I go swimming or get in the shower.

I've found unlined leather gloves, after they've cooled to the outside temperature, make my hand colder during the winter. After a very short time, they seem to draw the heat from my skin, and can't keep up with the winter cold.
However, Canadian Club shows you're a man of good taste. Why are some individuals so down on blended whiskey? Although, with seltzer I prefer some Rye Whiskey. Pity one can't get Alberta Premium outside of Canada.

As always, interesting. I would have to agree on the white dress shirt, I would disagree on most of the rest purely out of personal choice and for whisky I'd choose my local distillery, Glengoyne. The five year is young and light, but smooth and full of flavour. It's also more reasonably priced than its older siblings.

Hi, Ash. Great article. I like a straw Panama for the summer, and I usually carry a very small penknife. (I used to carry a Swiss Army Officer's Knife with a locking blade - becasue I prefer my fingers to be the size and shape they are - but that is no longer possible in the UK. As for the whisky: regrettably, I spend too much on Malt Scotch and not enough on shoes!

I can't live without my white tie and tails. I only wear it about once per month, but from the moment I put it on, I knew I couldn't just "not wear it" like everyone else.
    Several other items:
    - Bowler/boater
    - Pinstripe 3 piece suit
    - Red ascot
    - Grey paletot
    - Black oxfords
    - Winchester shirt
    - White pocket square
    - Braces
My style is formal and decorated. My essentials aren't the norm, but I love wearing these items!

    An excellent list. Thank you.
I would choose the Glenmorangie over any other alcoholic beverage. It is also a blend, with just a kiss of peat. For the watch my first choice would be the Dirty Dozen homage 36mm hand wound watch by VAER. It is not suited for diving, but I theorize that zombies sink in water; best to stay on the surface.
As a Yank, I never feel quite complete without a pocket knife (I favor the Civivi Elementum with grey scales) and a handkerchief. My shoe choice would be black brogues with rubber soles (classic postman's shoes). The jacket choice would be a Harrington, ideally in navy blue, but I live in a very mild climate, where casual is king.

Great video, my new friend, as a lady of somewhat more unique style, I have many little black dresses. A smart dressed gentleman needs a version of this as well. My favorite hat as a lady is the Irish newsboy cap, with a little rose added for femininity. Goes with just about everything. But this channel is for the chaps out there, so I personally love a Homburg on a man, or a Fedora. You are the first gentleman I have seen who looks smart in a Trilby, you look great! I introduced Tim, "Big Pretty", to Plum Wine, and he loves it now too!

You are, for sure, much more stylish than me, good sir! Being that I work overseas in a more rugged environment, some essential items for me are:
    1) Dark brown wool fedora (think Indiana Jones),
    2) Some form of a canvas jacket (to buffet the wind and rain),
    3) Canvas button-up shirt from Duluth Trading Co. (I can wear this in the wilderness or at church),
    4) Chinos pants. You are right, they go well with many things. As of late, though, I have been wearing a pair of 5.11 khaki combat pants. Surprisingly, they also go well with many things.
    5) My one shoe of choice is Merrell hiking shoes. I know they are not stylish, but they work well in the mountains or at church.
    6) My watch of choice is a Citizen Eco-Drive Field Watch. Black face with white illuminated numbers. I can easily read the time in a low light situation, and I never have to wind it up or change the batteries. It will run for over 25 years straight, as long at it gets light. It looks like the old WW2 US GI watches.
    7) My one fragrance of choice is Aramis. It is traditional, manly and I enjoy the smell.
    8) pocket knife, pen and a notepad. This is my everyday pocket carry.
    9) My bag of choice is an oilcloth satchel. It repels water and is small enough to sling over my shoulder. I can position it behind me, to my side or my front. I can carry quite a bit in the mountains, but it does not look out of place in a city, like a backpackers backpack.
I know that I am not very stylish, but for my line of work, this is my "uniform of choice." If I had a different job, I just might change my style to something like yours. I like it.

You really do sound like Dr Henry Jones in your wardrobe choices. I have been using a TacSac 13 for the last 6-months from the US company NutSac. It is an oiled canvas utility bag and I have absolutely loved it. I have subsequently retired my usual leather valise in favour of the smaller TacSac, which I find so much more versatile in daily use - not very stylish though (I revert to leather for smarter situations).

Hi I'm attending a wedding soon and it's an informal one however I'm curently interested in tricker stow boots or shoes to wear and chinos. I've yet to try on some chinos that i like whey range from cheep and shabby to downright baggy. Any recommendations for brands to consider. Plus the tricker boots and shoe in unsure if leather sole or chunkey commando sole is the way to go thanks.

Charles Tyrwhitt make an excellent chino trousers in a variety of fits and colours, I wear them often and they are excellent.
If you are wearing boots to a formal function, I would suggest the leather sole option, as the commando sole, which is excellent as a utility boot, will be somewhat chunky for a special occasion I suggest.
But remember, there are no rules - you must wear what you love!

    1. Not much of a hat person but I have 3 in mind, Bucket hat for when it's too hot, Tweet flat cap or a grey Beanie when cold.
    2. Agree, The Barbour wax jacket is pretty much my goto jacket (Also like the quilted Barbour Chelsea jacket, but nowhere near as good if it starts to rain)
    3. Again, spot on. When I finally started to dress properly about 10 years ago, the Navy Blazer was my first purchase, bought it off the peg at Burton's, so impressed with the quality I decided to get it altered (Shoulders and arm length) to get a near perfect fit, it is my goto dress jacket when I want to pair with my best dress jeans and brown Brogues.
    4. Blue Shirt man myself 90% of the time, but if i'm wearing a suit, or Dinner Jacket i'd choose the White button down.
    5. Still a big fan of jeans, even at the smart casual level, with the blue shirt, Navy Blazer & Brown Brogues.
    6. Brown Brogue Boots (Loake or Crockett&Jones) I have had a pair of Loake Bedale for the last 7 years and I have worn them nearly every day.
    7. The 2 watches I can't live without. Every day wear: Breitling Pluton 41mm Quartz on a brown strap. Smart casual: Tag Heuer Carrera Caliber 5 Automatic 39mm on a steel bracelet (Dream watch would be a Rolex Explorer)
    8. Best Tom ford, Semi Best Floris (89 0r Turnbull&Asser) and every day splash Ralph Lauren Polo Sport
    9. Not a massive fan of gloves, sometimes just a wool pair from M&S
    10. Drink: Merlot with my Sunday Dinner, Single Malt at least 12 yo as a digestive a few hours later while watching the F1 or a film. I don't really drink beyond that.

Well done Ash. I agree with your “Can’t live without items” list. But I also need a good quality rum, blue jeans, a good lighter to light my cigars. Love your tweet jacket.
Perhaps make a second 10 item list. Very good video. Keep them coming. Thank you.

When it comes to Whiskey, I always stay with Bourbons, usually Booker's (after diluting it down to 40% from its original 63% with ice or water), Woodford Reserve or Makers Mark. What draws me to Bourbons is the faint vanilla aroma all of them hint to, I suppose.

Would love a Barbour jacket, but instead I have Australian Outback's version of a Barbour jacket made in...Canada! lol I recently got a wax bucket style hat from Ireland that matches the green coat. As a Canadian I didn't know that Canadian Club is sold in 150 countries.

The list is a bit Alan Partridge and out of date, with the greatest of respect you should modernise yourself. I love the classics myself and agree with 70% of the list but the following are off the mark; navy blazers were left in the early nineties where they belong, they are terribly old fashioned and look frankly awful. The fragrances are pretty dire, old fashioned and don’t date well, Dunhill fragrances in particular are poor quality and dated. You should check out Aventus by Creed, Bleu by Chanel, Armani Code and Dior Sauvage (either the new Elixir or Parfum). Again the trilby is at least two generations out of date but I’ll give you that one as I think you could pull it off, so fair play to you, if you like looking really old fashioned that is.

I fully agree with the khaki trousers. They don't get nearly as much attention as they deserve these days.
However, I would argue that a navy blue jacket can't be worn with jeans. When worn on dark blue or indigo "smart' jeans, there just isn't enough of a colour difference and it ends up looking odd. While when worn on more casual jeans it clashes in formality. I personally think a grey sports jacket is more versatile.

Hehe. Fair play to you. I could definitely live without Canadian Club in my life. One scotch to rule them all. Rest of ones life? Hmm. That’s difficult. Perhaps Springbank 10yo. It has everything. A real treat and also could be considered a staple in my cabinet. Close second, Glencadam 15yo.

I am an avid fountain pen user and have recently filmed several reviews of entry-level pens from well known brands in recent weeks, these will start to arrive on the channel in the next few weeks (on Wednesdays).
Sadly I do not own a Montblanc as yet, but I am hopeful for the future. I have heard that MB Explorer is a pretty good stand-in for Creed's Aventus - I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the tip.

The one item I can't live without is my dark charcoal 2 piece suit. I have a blue suit which is ok, but I prefer the charcoal as it goes with so many shirts, ties and shoes and it looks really nice. I like other colors such as a lighter gray (which I don't have but want to get) but I have yet to own a suit that I like as much as my charcoal. I also seem to love ties and have a fair number of them. I believe ties are something you can wear that changes your entire look. One day it's blue, next day yellow, next day burgundy, etc. The suit can remain the same but you can change your look so much just by wearing a different color tie. So I love ties. When I was younger some of my friends called me 'the tie', because I always wore nice ties and had quite a variety of them. I still do that.

I would add the smoking pipe, Sherlock Holmes style pipe. I don't smoke my self, but just a nostalgia stylish item from the days of my older generation relatives in the 60's. I have one in my study at home. I just hold it sometimes and pretend to smoke and the rest is history.

    • @larryduncan3461

I imagine Ash’s decision to button both or even one button was that it looks better than having an open jacket while sitting on the bench with no table to block the view. But I would worry that the buttons and jacket material are under considerable stress as can be seen in the video. If the jacket is tailored to fit well buttoned while standing it is probably going to be a stressed if buttoned while sitting, especially the bottom button which is better left unbuttoned at all times. But as Ash reminds us often, “rules” can be broken. I’ve noticed that Ash’s jacket is often buttoned when he is sitting behind a table during a video.
