What happened after Emily left the Amish culture at 17?

  • Her story is remarkable. When she left home at 17 she wasn't able to come back home. She soon met a man, got pregnant, and married by the age of 19. It became a toxic relationship and she found herself planning an exit strategy with no money to her name and no support from family, with two children to take care of.
    Meet Emily Adams..."I grew up always asking “why” and dreaming of finding true happiness.
    Born and raised in the Amish culture I always wondered why. Why did we live differently? Was there more to life than being Amish? Was there true happiness somewhere?
    I was not your average Amish girl. I had no interest in learning how to cook, clean, sew, or do anything girly. I was a tomboy who loved to be outside, playing sports and training horses.
    At the age of 17, I made the decision to leave the culture and leave everything I had known my entire life. This was the first time in my life that I realized the amount of mental strength I had and the ability to believe in myself even when no one believed in me.
    A year later I was pregnant with my oldest son, Jordan, and got married at 19. A year into the verbally abusive marriage I knew I needed out but felt stuck since I just found out I was pregnant with my youngest son, Cameron. Fast forward two years I knew I needed to leave the abusive marriage for myself and my boys. Gathering up what strength I had, I filed for divorce and became a single mom."
    Emily's story is remarkable. In this video, she shows us how you can leave home, but home doesn't leave you. Her journey towards releasing what no longer served her in her culture, and really stepped into her power as a mom is a beautiful one. She now coaches other women on how to transform their mindset and live in a place of truth.

    I very much admire Emily for her courage and strength. I also believe that being Amish is not just a culture, it is a religion as well. The culture and the religion are mixed, like in many other religions. I always felt when I was a child, and I was raised Roman Catholic, that the bible was written by men to benefit men. I did not experience unreasonable behavior from anyone, but I noticed that the opinions, written in the bible, were biased and not sincere. Biased information can lead to injustice, and it does within the Amish community (and in other religious communities as well). I respect religious communities, but I will never be a part of them, because I believe it is better to have your own thoughts and opinions.

    I live in the middle of an Amish settlement in central Ontario Canada.
    These Amish use Martin Luther's 1522 High German Bible. They speak Pennsylvania Dutch and not really true German in most cases. They educated in English but not educated officially in most cases in the German language of their bible.
    Most of them have no clue of true Christianity.

      @@stephenfisher3721 No I am certainly not God. However I have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ through his death, burial and resurrection. In the process I became "Born again." My conversion to true Christianity from being a "False convert to Christianity" is exactly according to what the perfect word of God teaches in the 1611 Authorized Version or King James Version teaches.
      In order to be a "true Christian" one must thoroughly believe the Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ, which is distinctly noted in the following scripture;
      1 Corinthians 15:1-4
      King James Version
      15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
      4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures
      If one truly believes that salvation is only possible according to the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus one must approach God in prayer as a repentant sinner calling upon God asking for forgiveness and salvation.

      According to the bible all sins are forgiven once a person is born again. The only sin that is never forgiven is a person's choice to reject Jesus as their personal savior.

    I watched your first video and was struck by how courageous you are. I began watching this second video and can relate to leaving a toxic and abusive marriage However, I was very surprised when you commented that your parents wanted to see their grandchildren, so you agreed to “slide back” so to speak into your previous life by obeying the “rules” and wearing a dress?! Being the mother of two boys myself (or even girls) I would worry that is teaching them to be okay with a patriarchal society. I feel that religion is tantamount to child abuse. I was raised southern baptist, church 3x a week, revivals, and dresses and a terrifying fear of hell. I was talking to a Jewish friend one day (20 years ago) and she was telling me how she came to realize she was an atheist. I began explaining to her that I was pretty sure I was an atheist, but terrified of going to hell. She replied that it seemed that was all that I was still holding onto- fear. That is when I knew I needed therapy and deprogrammg. I’m 53 now and it took me years to get over abuse that was hiding behind religion. And I’m still trying to forgive my parents. I can not imagine going through what you did.You seem like an amazing mom.

      I didn't slide back to wearing a dress or to their culture. I still showed up to see them but was wearing what I wanted to wear not what they told me to wear.

      I'm so grateful that religion isn't a major part of life here in the UK, I admire how Emily found a way out of the Amish community, Emily may not have had such a great start after leaving the community but now she's moving forward with her life with her sons.
      I know people from other religions, Mormon, Jehovah's witnesses etc, as an outsider looking in, I noticed that women are treated like second class citizens, as a man, although I'm single, if I were with a partner, I would consult them with regard to any decisions, but I've read bits of the Jehovah's witnesses Bible and the Mormon Bible, they are very anti women in many ways, not all, I'm not going to say that they're completely anti women, but I admire your strength and courage to escape.
      Bethy, I I haven't ignored your comment, I hope that you and Emily have a successful future and your past experiences at least the bad ones leave you in favour of positive experiences, good luck ladies

      The Andrew Sisters recorded an Americanized version of a Yiddish song in 1937. Yiddish is the language of European Jews. The song retained the Yiddish line, Bei Mir Bistu Schoen. It became a big hit in Germany, even among Nazis who assumed it was a German dialect. It was a major embarrassment when the Nazis learned it was Yiddish.

    Women who have been initially brainwashed and threatened with the wrath of God and the withdrawal of parental and heavenly love can fall prey to an abusive man. It took courage and perseverance and is an example for others that they can do it, as well. I do wonder however, if there isn't an organization run by other Amish "refugees" who help those who are in need? Seems as though it would help people like Emily, who have recognized that the culture they were born into, is no longer compatible with who they are.

    It sounds like rebellion led to catastrophe. Even though she questioned things, if she had accepted her misfortune until she could meet a decent man, her life would have been spared. We all have to put up with our have-nots and make the best of it until things get better. However, when we make moves without a lot of prayer, it can get all messed up. Perhaps a lesson we should learn is to pray more and throughout the day. If we have communion or a relationship with God, then we have confidence we can go on when we have talked to him about it.

    Chains are broken! On the cross, He said “It Is Finished!” Romans 4:5 says “God justifies the ungodly (the wicked ugly hearted, running away from God, not trusting God’s mercy) type of person. Those “ whom the Son sets free shall be free indeed!” Eternal (Aeonion) life is this : to know him ( his character)..to know God in all of his love and mercy and power to heal you and set you free from captivity & any chains of bondage that binds you up. Job 14:15 tells us how this is: “You will call (it’s always his work that begins a surgery in our hearts).. and I will answer ( we only answer him when we start thinking correctly, after he performs the heart surgery on us!) and you will long for the work your hands have made. “ God longs for each and every one of us! His thoughts toward us are many, many, many. He has great plans for All of his creation. He is not about to leave any lost sheep out in the cold forever! His mercy endures forever and his love never fails. He keeps no record of wrongs. Religion tries to portray Father God as hating the sinner. No way in hell he would first have the iniquities of us all laid upon him and destroy him who held the power of sin which is death.. and fling our sins as far as the East is from the West, and then only to turn back around and put us in captivity again. He said he came that the captives would be set free! To heal the broken hearted, bring sight to the blind, and to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And to give us life for the ages. Jeremiah 29:21 tells us “Behold the Plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to prosper you and to be in health and to not harm you but give you a future and a hope!” Good stuff ahead brother or sister! Come on in the water is just fine!
