The swing Bonham puts into his beats is amazing. Very hard to copy accurately
Yes..He hardly ever plays grooves straight. There's always a swing underneath. There's a clip on youtube of Ginger Baker saying Bonham couldn't swing a sack of shit. Imagine? What a jealous little angry prick.
Joe Nocella Alot of people didn't figure out how great J.B. was. People have been getting it in the last few years though because I'm one of them! Ginger is aso one of them!
Had Enough
Ginger baker couldn't shine Bonham's fuckin shoes. He ain't no goddam jazz drummer and couldn't groove near as hard as Bonham
Ronan, check out Gingers Trio albums w/ Charlie Haden & Bill Frissell & report back!
No doubt Ginger Baker is an excellent drummer. I may have been come off a little strong with that. But I can't stand his pretension about being "ACTUALLY a jazz drummer", I mean he's good player, but the shit he plays is pretty childish compared to the real cats. I just thought it was shitty of him to diss Bonham in the documentary. (even though Bonham grooves way harder than him)
Even while he's casually tapping on whatever it is, you can hear him slightly behind the beat. Awesome that he had the ability to do that as it was one of the many nuances that gave LZ that unique sound.
+kjustifi8 That's not a unique thing, it's called playing in the pocket.
+kjustifi8 guitar case
+John Wallent I'm a drummer. I disagree. I think it's called not using a click track.
kjustifi8 If you're a drummer who isn't aware of playing in the pocket you might want to find a new instrument.
+John Wallent Apparently you like playing in your own pocket. And perhaps the pockets of many men. Front pockets I'll bet.
It is great to hear the tones of his drums isolated.
I think I`ve menaged to tune my 22" bass drum very similairly to this recording. Lovin it!
This is what Wikipedia said about it. And I quote, "There has been much doubt around Bonham's percussions in the background throughout the song, having regard to the particular resonance that it captures. There are no versions consistent in this respect: often mistaken for bongos, some said of a small plastic bin for waste played with the hands from the side of the bottom, others about the sticks on his drum kit vinyl seat pad, or even the soles of the shoes he wore during the recording session and so rhythmically beaten with his drum sticks; the book John Bonham: A Thunder Of Drums reports instead of a hard case for guitar on which Bonham improvised percussion background with bare hands." I guess no one knows for sure, or it's regarded as a secret to guard it's mystique.
Or it could have been John slapping Page:)
have you ever thought he was tapping the side of his throne?
It sounds like a practice pad to keep time until the intro is over.
It could be a leather couch too, LOL.
Can't help but tap my finger rapidly on the table every time this song comes up.
I didn’t know my brother listened to Led Zeppelin drum loops! I always hear 0:00-1:05 on him room at 2:00 AM
John Bonham was tapping his fingers on a guitar case - his brother Mick cleared it up in the early 2000s !
One of the most prominent myths was a plastic garbage can in the studio, which would be unusual, because in those days, almost every garbage can everywhere, big or small, was metal, including outdoor garbage cans and even kids cartoon garbage cans into the early 1980s. Some have tried to assert he was tapping his sneakers - LOL.
definitely pinky toe on a plastic garbage can from the future.
That's a clever & funny comment Vicious - LOL !!!
Yes
has it been cleared up if he used more than one hand and finger?
2:31
I actually was considering making some videos like that, vocal-free versions, drum-free versions, guitar-free versions, etc. I think I'll do it.
"I will beat my hands to this whatever thingy here in front of me and fifty years from now people will be discussing how the sound was achieved, which finger I used, etc, etc"
Underrated comment 👏😜👏
These Iso-tracks are saving me a lotta work.
You are one cool cat.
Thanks...
BTW Keep them coming....if you got the time.
Especially the drums for LED Z...I can play the bass, and all guitars...but who can do J B's drums? Not I .
Great, love to hear the rest of LZ 2.
Anyone know what the tapping sound is?
The left hand ghost notes are the key. To even begin to understand it, listen to "The Bernard Purdue Shuffle" even the greatest have copied and learned from him. Jeff Porcaro even admits Rosanna was a mix of purdies shuffle and fool in the rain by Bonham.
This is my favorite song for a few reasons
The bands that came after ZEP never got it. They were trying to sound like Zeppelin but didn't take into account what those 4 guys had. Great Musicians on their own, World Class Players those cats were & are. Put that together with how Zeppelin played as a "BAND", leave it alone. It's already been done & won't be topped!
listen to his foot at 4:43, fucking sneaky
Someone's gonna mix some sweet break beats with this ^_^
Yeaaahh!!!!!!!
Yes...workin' on it.
Awesome and thanks.
Trying to get the same sound from my SPD-20PRO
😊bonzo treno😊
Hey dude! have you thought about doing a video with everything but the electirc guitar part?
that would be great!!
Can someone just ask jimmy page in an interview what the heck was bonham was using?
It would be AWESOME!
and i haven't found any of that kind ramble on, versions!
Where do you get the master tape recordings anyway?
This kind of thing isn't appreciated by most people. That's why it's often replaced by drum machines (machines that rob the music of music). What he does with the consistency and super clean accents is incredibly hard. He's not the best time keeper (Al Jackson Jr. of Booker T fame has to be the best at that), but he was the best in rock.
Imagine how terrible Zeppelin's albums would sound if the drums were on time.
+jehstr Jimmy Page would miss every cue haha
where can I download these?
He's patting/tapping his legs with his hands apparently. I read it in some Led zep book!
where did these multi tracks come from? was it really guitar hero/rock band?
Bonham " shuffled " way back in 1968
What effect does he have on this? A reverb with predelay on the snare?
+Andybaby No effects, just ghost notes. You probably need to work on yours
Except they actually DID use effects on the drums. EVERYONE did.
So what effects were used on the drums then?
hey, i can do that ! :D ...you interested in doing some online collaborations?
As if Bonham is playing the Dumbroo(of Lord Shiva's)....!!
