This was so interesting to watch, not only for the lighting - I was just happy to see that even someone with your experience at group photography still suffers with the "herding cats" issue. How to keep them all listening to you without being rude!! :-)
Vanessa, I did a shoot like this one today at a wedding registry and the weather was really dull (slight spits of rain). I had my GODOX v860ii set at 1/64 power and ISO set at 1600 and my shutter was set at 1/200 sec. The pics came out well. Thanks for strengthening my confidence as I was on my own for two hours with a horrible registrar dictating a million things I can't do.
Why ISO 1600 ? Indoors I might go as high as 800, outside typically 4 groups f/8 ISO 200, 1/160 sec. off camera lights 1/2 power--adjust as needed. Also, remember the further U R from subject the greater the DOF and consider the inverse square law 4 your lighting.
I don't understand how every photographer on youtube has found a place where there is just no wind at all. When I try to bring an umbrella of any size ... to quote Yondu: I'm Mary Poppins y'all!
@@wolfgangk1 sure, but even a 250ws light isn't that powerful for an outdoor shoot. So his comment is still relevant even if incorrect on power detail.
So Vanessa, it has finally happened. I have my first wedding booked for June 17th! Between you and Taylor Jackson, ill be going into it as knowledgeable as a pro! Thank you for everything!
@@corykphotography Or a large softbox. Anywhere from 48" up will be fine. So either a 4 ft. or 5ft. softbox. But yes, a large shoot through is great for large groups as shoot throughs produce a very wide spread of light provided your light isn't too close to the umbrella (in other words, pull the umbrella out far enough from the light itself so the light can cover as much of the umbrella's surface area as possible for the softest light).
I picked up a second godox ad600 and use it for all my indoor and outdoor bridal party photos. It makes such a big difference when using both of them. I just did a bridal party if 10 groomsmen and 10 bridesmaids on a bright sunny day and both ad600’s using HSS and F8 and I didn’t have anything overexposed and took some of the best photos of my career. I don’t ever use natural light any more for my bridal parties. It’s just so much better using off-camera flash
I just picked up my first AD600 Pro and I should have gotten one a lot sooner, absolutely fantastic. What did/do you use as modifiers for your big groups?
I was amazed at how well you put everything together and how big a group you have with you when I buy things I did and by myself I rarely had an assistant and I had to do everything no wonder you make so much money a year
Just the video I was looking for. I'm looking to take family portraits of 4 to 6 people in the near future. I have an AD1200 Pro on order but wasn't clear what kind of light modifier would be best for the given situation. Thank you
If you were in hss, why not move your modifier a bit closer and increase your shutter to 1/1000, or even 1/1500? That large umbrella should have been able to handle it.
Hi! For me the images looks to flat and was wandering was it not possible to rise the shutter speed and balance the light power in order to get darker background and nice light over the people?
But why @VanessaJoy was using a shoot through? Wouldn't it be better using a regular large umbrella? I mean her flash would be more effecient rather than wasting power that bounces off the back of the umbrella to oblivion.
Vanessa, I know you were in HSS, but could you have used an ND filter or VND filter instead, to get the same shots without being in HSS? Great shots too. Thanks for the education!
Vanessa, you mention you couldn't lower your ISO below 200 when using HSS because of highlight tone priority. As far as I remember this feature does not affect RAW images, so if you are shooting in RAW it is useless and does not let you use ISO 100.
Last I checked with Canon it did affect RAW images, but I’ll have to double check that. That being said, I care about the jpg outcome as well bc I use jpgs for my same day edits and most of what you see posted on my social media
So you mentioned a highlight setting on canons only. I currently shoot with a canon RP. What is this setting so I can mess with it and work on using it. Cause I have noticed in outdoor portraits I have lost some details cause of the bright s sky’s and what not?
She mentioned that it was a Profoto B10, which I was easily able to find with a quick Googling. They are quite pricey. I would recommend the Godox ad300, ad400, or ad600 as much less expensive options.
I'm not a big fan of the washed out skin tones that most photographers post when using artificial lights. It seems to wash out all color and makes everyone in the picture look as if they have the same washed out skin tone. Nice BTS continued success. Just me
Realizing that gear worth thousands of dollars and doing all those fancy lightning can’t save a photo when the composition is bad. @9:48 Why is there a blue car between the bride and the bridesmaid head when taking the photos? A step from both to the right (their left) would have covered the blue car in the background. I assume it was a car or container not moving at all.
This composition works IMO. The trees and street provide leading lines to the subject. If she moved to her right the white building would possibly show up now or she wouldn't get some of the street as leading lines (without changing her lens). The blue stuff isn't too, too distracting because you can't even tell what it is. This blue stuff is a super easy fix in Lightroom or PS anyways :D On some of these shots the bride and bridesmaid even covered it :)
"Natural light" has its place, but more often than not, "photographers" simply don't invest in education, training or equipment so that's their excuse/crutch. Know when & how to use all kinds of light, and stop running around with no flash at all.
Is it not a little pointless using such a large umbrella when you have the flash set so close to it. The light is only going through the centre part of that umbrella. It's nice to see someone on UA-cam at an actual wedding.
I 'm a wedding photographer of many years and I was curious as to why you did nothing to teach as in camera/lens used, camera/light settings, light to subject distance. Also, seemed confusing as to how you where setting up the groups, I always physically walk over and assist them. Last Never be Masked, as they need see your lips and facial expressions, Plus outdoors so mask are not needed, I never wore one during 2020-21 nor did anybody else. Hope this helps you.
Vanessa is one of my favorite UA-camrs and I watch most of her videos. In this video however, I am a bit confused why she's using HSS for a group portrait using a wimpy flash and a shoot through umbrella. I believe she would have had much better results using the camera sync speed with a smaller umbrella at the same f5.6 or 8. Sometimes UA-camrs post something just to have content and sell products. I bought one of her books called 'Off Camera Flash Handbook,' and I will recommend it to anyone who wants to be creative with their flash.
The B10 is by NO means a "wimpy flash". Especially in a shoot through. She's actually maximizing the power of the flash here. She could have definitely used an ND filter instead of HSS, as someone already mentioned, though, to retain the full range of the B10's power.
The results would be different if she used a smaller size modifier unless she moved the light closer to her subject but as you can see from the video, she couldn't. If she used a smaller umbrella the fill light wouldn't be as soft. These pictures were fine. Shooting 1/500 of a sec without using an nd filter is not too bad. She made it work.
Finally a video with an umbrella for weddings!!
Refreshing to see you do the traditional shots that we all have to do rather than just signature shots. Very helpful.
Gotta get these done too!

Just one v860ii? I use that flash too but always doubted that it could handle more than 4 people packed together.

omg YES!!!
There's a dynamic sandbag securing the light stand.
Sounds just like the UK! I wonder if putting a diffuser behind the umbrella would help to stop the wind getting in?
That’s why I use 2 medium size softboxes instead w sandbags - more stability-
Lol there was wind!! My assistant is not allowed to leave that nightstand! Oh... and it fell over once. Lol
I'm surprised that a 150W Flash w/ an Umbrella that big could light up a day shoot, and on HSS too! Mind blown! I definitely must try this.
The Profoto B10 is 250w. She NEVER said 150w

Great video! Vanessa's a great teacher and obviously one hell of a photographer! Very helpful video!
Looked like a fun couple and bridal party!
You could use Nd filter instead of Hss (high speed sync) and get around 2 more stops of flash power.

These on site videos are amazing
It's hard to see how much the light is working here.
The gopro approach never allowed for a clear view of the lighting setup. Some of us amateurs need to see it
Great stuff..the old inverser squatre law coming in to play.
I would love to have a demo more of a shoot through modifier and where to place it for outdoor and indoor weddings and why
Hi! For me the images looks to flat and was wandering was it not possible to rise the shutter speed and balance the light power in order to get darker background and nice light over the people?
Venessa, fantastic info. Definitely one to learn from!
Well done to everyone!
Vanessa, you are the educator! An aside, where and when was this shoot? Were the tree blossoms intentional background, or was that serendipitous?
I feel like you can achieve very similar results without flash. Expose for the highlights and then in post bring up the shadows.
Just what I was after. In windy climates I wonder whether putting a diffuser over the open end of the umbrella would help??
So do you work off the ambient backlight/rim as the dominant light and use the fill to reduce the shadows?
💥💥 Aren’t shoot through umbrellas very inefficient at broadcasting light? I though they spread the light everywhere. 🤔
Love the Checklist! ✔️
My mind couldn’t stop yelling "RULE OF ODDS!!!"
What do you mean rule of odds? I am curious :)
