My dad played music for a living. He was also a drummer. I never could understand how he could sing and play at the same time. It takes incredible coordination to do all that at once.

One of the best live performances ever.
I saw Phil sing this epic live 4 different concerts on his solo tours. Spine tingling every time. His pacing of this song vocally while he slowly walks to his drum kit is perfection and has to be timed to the second. Pure genius. All about the buildup and anticipation, which creates TENSION, and that TENSION is then obliterated and resolved with his huge gated reverb drum fill.

Phils original studio recording was in 1981 and this live show was in 2004. He hasnt lost his edge. Still the best of the best.

Phil started out as a drummer with Genesis and when Peter Gabriel left the band Phil kind of got pushed into the position as singer too. He toured with Robert Plant's solo band after Led Zeppelin broke up and that's when I saw him. Amazing drummer and performer!

The TV show "Miami Vice" was highly-rated and at the end of one season (a season cliff hanger as they call it) at the end of the show this song was playing as a bad guy was preparing to shoot detective Sonny Crockett played by Don Johnson (star in his own right and dad of Dakota Johnson of "50 Shades of Grey" fame). Crockett survived but it was an extremely dramatic moment and etched this song into the memory of everyone watching that show.

Phil got his first drum kit when he was 5 years old. An amazing life full of amazing work. His Miami Vice episode as Phil the Shill is great. Check out Genesis too. (not a religious band, however)

Yeah, you have to listen to the original studio track. This intro is exceptionally long because it is live. I loved this song when it was out.
FUN FACTS…Written bc of Divorce, Cheating, & Phil was pissed! Most people don’t know Phil is left handed. So his drums are set up exactly backwards of “normal”. The reason you don’t see them until he gets to them, is bc they are on risers under the stage. They are timed perfectly for when he gets there. He has retractable sticks (barely perceivable straps around wrist). He doesn’t have to reach for them, like most drummers do bc they weee already with him! No flow interruption! Then he just lets it fly! I am a subscriber bc I love what you do. You are very good at it. I’ll be back!

And still this daft story of Phil seeing a murder… the song is about his Ex Wife having an affair with the decorator … he explains it all in his autobiography in chapter 9
Not true. This is about a divorce and nobody was spotlighted.
That is a false urban legend that never happened. Phil has repeatedly shot that silliness down. He did write it spontaneously during his 1st divorce when his wife wanted him to quit touring and quit Genesis. The anger is in the drum fill. But he's stated it's NOT about a particular incident.

This is such a awesome song! Phil Collins is an icon. He wrote this song about his divorce. Singing and playing the drums at the same time is most difficult at best. He does it with ease. Phil can no longer play the drums due to a back injury. His son plays now. Phil can still sing. He was 53 years old in this performance. Love your reactions! Just a side note, I really wish you would get rid of the cars in the background.
It's not about his divorce. Yes he was going through a divorce when he wrote it but it's not about that. He has said he tells everyone that goes up to him trying to tell him what it's about, and he says "I promise you you don't know what it's about because I don't even know what it's about."

Phil is a 'Prog Rock' God having played with Genesis from the early 70s. You gotta check out his live Genesis dual drumming with Chester Thompson. Checkout the live Rome open air gig in 2007 in front of half a million people it is insane. It is amazing you have never heard of Phil before along with Genesis he has sold over 300 million albums! yes 300 million! He took over from another legend Peter Gabriel as lead singer in 1975. Its completely distracting and kills the mood of this epic song, which is all about mood, atmosphere and anticipation. The BUILDUP to the huge drum fill is the key. You could have saved your commentary for after the song. Then, you didn't have ANY reaction to the epic drum fill. What the heck? Why even bother? Most reactors are blown away and emotional. You 2 just did this song because you noticed many reactors doing it and getting big click numbers.
Did you even know Phil Collins is a drummer? Did you know he started out as the DRUMMER for GENESIS in 1971 when PETER GABRIEL was the lead singer? You should really, really check out Peter Gabriel’s live version of In Your Eyes. It incorporates a lot of African musical influences. He was the Genesis lead singer when Collins played drums. When Peter went solo, Phil took over vocals. > ✝️
