  • College is expensive. Physician Assistant (PA) School is EXPENSIVE. Nursing school, medical school, law school, MBA, etc. ..we need this training to have the careers of our dreams but unfortunately the training is very costly. People take tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars out in student loans to reach their dreams and then find themselves in tremendous amounts of student debt as soon as they graduate. Most people think this is just the way it is, there's no way around it. You must go into student debt in order to become a doctor, nurse, PA, etc. Well, today I want to show you how this does NOT have to be true for you. It IS possible to graduate DEBT FREE! I did it using the post 9/11 GI bill from serving in the US Navy. My buddy Elijah is considering doing it using the HRSA scholarship, which we will discuss at length in this video.

    This is absolutely what I’m going to do, thank you SO MUCH! I already wanted to work at a Native American health clinic in town, and it’s part of the NHSC. I could get all my loans wiped working somewhere I wanted to work already 🙌🏾

    Also, look into the VA! Veterans and disabled veterans get hiring preference. Even a non-competitive hiring process for a veteran's spouse. And some cases direct hire eligibility so you don't have to jump through so many hoops. But they also have a program called EDRP which repays you up to 40k per year for 5 years for a total of 200k with no service length required. EDRP is for any applicant in a hard-to-fill position.

      Wow I didn’t know about that! Why tf did I spend all my money paying off student loans while I was on active duty 🤦🏻‍♂️

      Just a note it's no longer a preference it's a requirement, you must be a veteran to be eligible. I tried and was rejected specifically because they said only veterans are eligible

      @@carlosgoda9786 Are you referring to EDRP or the HPSP scholarship? Only the HPSP scholarship, for PA school, has a requirement to be a vet. My wife is a psychologist with the VA and she has EDRP and she isn't a vet. EDRP is for hard-to-fill positions and should be in the posting if it's available and that's the only eligibility criteria. Also, VA employees can have the PSLF after 10 years as well. It's not a bad deal.
      For the HPSP scholarship, that's an awesome deal and one I'm personally hoping for. As a vet, they will pay for school as long as you work for 2 years but the caveat is that it has to be one of the VAs on their list.

      @@BorisThePA I have no idea! Also, if you hit a 100% disability rating your student loans get wiped out. I'm currently at 90% if/when they approve my current claim I'll be at 100%. So I'm hoping that I either get 100% or the HPSP scholarship since my GI Bill will time out about the time I finish my undergrad. Although, I have heard of guys using VR&E to cover PA school as well as get the BAH on top of it. There are a lot of options, especially for vets!

      @@zachschaneberger oh damn that’s a sweet deal. I’m only 30% disability and I don’t see it going any higher. Good for you bro 😎

    Not sure if it was mentioned but there is also the NHSC Students to Service scholarship (which I obtained). It pays 30k tax free dollars per year for at least 3 years worth of service, If you complete 3 years they will give the additional 4th payment. You can apply to this during your last year of PA school. Same protocols regarding working in an underserved area applies here as well.

    I want to do primary care in the future, I just don’t know how I will feel after my rotations. I am also curious if I could switch sites with the HRSA if I am unhappy at the site I’m at. Great informative video!

      Definitely a lot of choices there! Personally I lean toward just starting your career in a field you’re actually interested in… but my perspective is from someone who has no student loans. So I understand how people would do this program to get ahead on their loans. And idk if you can switch sites! That’s a great question

    Can you moonlight somewhere else at the same time

    • @BorisThePA
      @BorisThePA  7 місяців тому

      A lot of people do. You do you need to be careful because I’ve seen a few contracts at this point, and all of them have had a clause saying something along the lines of “you’re not allowed to do anything that will take a significant amount of time” basically preventing you from taking a second job. But in reality, a lot of people moonlight at the ER, at an urgent care, etc.
