Sonic 3 & Knuckles Part 14: Doomsday Zone & Hyper Sonic Ending

- The Death Egg is now at last gone for good, but Eggman was still able to steal away the Master Emerald once again, even after that last bit with his Egg Mobile.
Sonic becomes Hyper Sonic and gives chase to him in an asteroid field orbiting the planet Earth.
You can only reach this TRUE FINAL zone if you manage to beat Eggman at the very of Death Egg Zone with either only the Chaos Emeralds, or those and the Super Emeralds for a total of 14 Emeralds. You have to be playing as Sonic, too. Otherwise, the game ends there, with a less victorious ending to boot.
But if you do manage to reach The Doomsday, there are 3 sections of it you have to beat before you can finally beat this long, spectacular game.
Part 1: Hyper Sonic travels through an asteroid belt, trying to not let said space rocks slow him down, and maintaining his transformation with rings. It's very tight to get over 100 rings, here, and whether or not you got to this point with Sonic & Tails, or Sonic on his own, this stage will ONLY show Sonic.
Part 2: The asteroids and meteors disappear, and Hyper Sonic catches up with Eggman who is now in an blue, Egg Rocket/Mech mashup. You can't hurt him on your own, so you have to trick the missiles he fires at you to hit the head of his rocket mech. This has to be done a couple more times than an Act 2 boss to bring it down.
Part 3: The blue rocket mech was just a shell of a yet another Death Egg Robot, this one is smaller compared to the ones in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles' Death Egg versions, but this version is more agile with rockets on its shoulders. Eggman uses this mech as his very, honestly, desperately, oh-so-very final-ditch effort to keep the Master Emerald away from Sonic. He only slows him down at this point with shoulder bombs and hip mines.
Just dodge them, and hit the mech 8 more times to destroy it and finish Eggman once and for all.
The music speeds up when Sonic only has 10 rings left. If Sonic runs out of Rings at this point, he falls to his death.

The Death Egg Robot III falls apart, probably to either be left in space or to fall back on Earth somewhere. Hyper Sonic grabs the Master Emerald with his remaining strength, and rush it right back down to Earth.
He lands on the Tornado piloted by Tails, and changes back to normal while Tails grabs the Master Emerald with a plane plunger. Sonic & Tails take the Master Emerald back to Angel Island, which creates a chain reaction that causes the entire, massive island to float up into the sky.
That was the importance of the Master Emerald. Without it, the island would sink into the sea. As it floats upwards, Knuckles is seen returning to the first level, Angel Island's jungle, to see his new friends taking off one last time.
So then the credits play, combining the composers of this game's Sonic 3 half, most of whom are Micheal Jackson's crew, with Sonic & Knuckles' solo composer, Howard Drossin.
The "THE END" portrait for this game is Sonic jumping off of the Tornado, turning into Hyper Sonic, flying off the screen, and returning to give the player a thumbs up.
The VERY final part of this game has Team Sonic together amongst the logo of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. Their placing changes depending on which of them you beat the game with, and you can only get to this screen if you beat the game with all of the Super Emeralds.
So then the game resets and you can go back to the "Data Select" screen. That file is now cleared, and now I can use it to start at any zone I want. Meaning now I can use Hyper Sonic as early as Angel Island Zone, and take advantage of his ability to breathe underwater. Tails can somehow breathe through this, too.

Imagine how terrifying this whole situation must be for Eggman. He's piloting a giant mech suit through space when suddenly he looks behind him and sees a glowing rainbow streak barreling towards him at the speed of light, plowing through solid rock and artillery like it's a mild inconvenience. He probably doesn't know about Sonic reverting to normal at zero rings meaning he has NO idea what he's doing and is just throwing whatever he can to try and stop Sonic wiping him from existence

He probably does know about the fact that sonic will revert to normal once he has 0 rings. He made tech that can harness the power of the master emerald so he probably knows how it works.
Pretty sure the rings thing is just a game mechanic thing. Canonically, Sonic can just keep on being Super or even Hyper for as long as needed.

This was it. I was 13. I’d already had S&K for three years but I happened to see Sonic 3 in a store and begged my dad to get it for me. When I combined them I truly knew joy. I now have this game on an emulator on my tablet.
Lol and it sure as heck wasn't this moment. What a shambles almost every boss fight in this game is (to play that is; they're beautiful to watch). I like sonic 3, it's the least flawed 2D sonic. But that's not saying much. A sizeable portion of it is still irredeemable and janky af. I'd sooner play Rush Adventure, at least it's more honest about its BS and has more consistently good level design, even if the story and the physics aren't a scratch on 3.
It wasnt this one. For the classic trilogy, 100% by far my favourite. But not my favourite sonic game. Not at all
I always love how Knuckles keeps looking at the Tornado in the ending. Almost as thanking both Sonic and Tails.
For proving that Knuckles had new friends all along and didn't realize it till the literally very end,

@@BlindLibrary Unfortunately for Knuckles, he later had to face the death egg robot in his own story camping in this game, who stole the master emerald from Knuckles. And after he finally revived it after defeating Hyper Mecha Sonic, he was forced to stay on Angel Island "on what feels like forever". Because yes, the adventure game happened and he was lonely for a long af time there as the intro states.

I love how laser-focused Sonic seems, he knows what’s at stake here. The fate of the entire world is shouldered by this entire battle. Sonic knows that if Robotnik gets away with the Master Emerald then the planet would become a robotized mess within the week, and he’s isn’t going to let that happen. He must end this once and for all.
Eggman doesn't actually robotize anything, it's just one of the Sega of America's headcanons to make Sonic series "darker", even where it doesn't fit them at all.

Can we just talk about the scene?
Sonic transforms right into space, chasing after Robotnik as he still has the master emerald, and he harnesses the power of the super emeralds in order to stop him. No matter what Robotnik throws at him, sonic still forces his way through, takes down his ship and is ready to fight the Mecha Suit in order for the master emerald. It really IS the final showdown.
Gotta give it to Robotnik though, No matter how many times he's defeated, Even to seemingly the perfect plan, He always has some new crazy invention and tries again

Guess I’m gonna assume that his Eggman bot crash lands back on angel island & that’s when the hard boiled robos come out & he had ENOUGH so he uses the warp stone and that’s where sonic mania begins.
Let me see if I'm right: if Sonic wants to pass trought Doomsday Zone, he has at least to get the 7 emeralds, and we all know that when he manages to do so he becomes Super Sonic; so we can conclude that no Hyper Sonic (or at least Super Sonic) no Doomsday Zone. Am I right?

This was just a rollercoaster of an ending for a sonic game.
If you were playing S&K on it's own, you might have been led to believe the doomsday zone was only available to Sonic 3 and Knuckles Lock on, get all the emeralds and suddenly, NOPE you can do it as base Super Sonic!
But here, no cheesey dialogue, just a kick ass theme and a boss that leaves you in a real struggle against time.
Also notice the slight variations of the endings
Sonic does not get emeralds - He falls free from space and the Emerald doesn't follow him down.
Sonic gets Chaos Emeralds (Best S&K ending) - Sonic takes the emerald down but he reverts to normal upon entering the blue sky and free falls till tails gets him. Knuckles does not appear in the ending
Sonic gets Super Emeralds (Best S3&K ending) - Sonic takes the emerald down and retains his hyper form till he lands on the plane. Knuckles appears after the plane is departing to look over his new allies (till the next time he falls for silly lies).
He already fell for silly lies in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I mean, he didn't try to stop Sonic and Tails for no purpose.

One of the most obscure differences here is that the Master Emerald glows if you have all of the Super Emeralds. If you don't, it does not glow.

No lie this zone took me by surprise. I've played this game as a kid and never got neither the super emeralds or the chaos emeralds but as an adult I did. And let me tell this has got to be the most satisfying/surprising gaming experience I've ever witnessed. The soundtrack, the setting, the desperation, this was the True tip of the Climax. When I beat this zone with just 2 rings left, then heard the sky sanctuary theme play... I felt such a great sense of heroism and joy.
Truly the best game of the 16bit era

I feel sad kids today will never experience the feeling that you get when you're thrown into Doomsday Zone the first time. You defeated Death Egg Act 2. You put your controller down, expecting the credit scene to come up. Suddenly you get thrown into space, Sonic turns super (hyper), the fast pace music comes up unexpectedly letting you know this shit is serious. There is no draggy cringy cut scene, chats. dialog leading into Doomsday Zone. It just happens within a few seconds. I will never feel this moments in gaming ever again. It is also unbelievably awesome that you get to FLY as Sonic in hyper speed, for this ONE stage. The experience make getting all the emerald worth it.

Eggman proves himself to be the ultimate Sonic villain only in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Throughout the last two games, he didn't take Sonic seriously.
In this game, he finally takes him seriously, but still goofs around with him half of the game. If you notice the narrative, as the game goes on, his machines become more and more crude, showing less scientific ingenuity and more crude and effective methods for dispatching Sonic.
It all culminates with Lava Reef Zone when his rage and frustration is revealed and he foregoes all of his classiness to defeat Sonic. Only to think ahead of Sonic a few steps with contingency plans until you get to this point. I like to think that Hyper Sonic is the canon form in this fight, because it'd emphasize that when he's truly serious, Dr. Eggman is a greater threat than the godly villains and he pushes Sonic to his absolute limit

The Doomsday will be remembered in my eyes as one of the best Sonic Stages ever! And I would have loved to see Hyper Sonic and The Doomsday Zone return in Sonic Mania!

I remember as a kid I was tryna beat “Doomsday Zone” it was one of the hardest levels I ever had to face but also one of the best levels I’ve ever played. Flying in space facing meteoroids, catching rings for more energy and also playing Super Sonic to catch Dr. Robotnik(Eggman) in his robot without needing to get all the emeralds(Eventually I got all the emeralds and super emeralds) but having to experience this in my childhood was amazing. Definitely one of my top 3 favourite Sonic games ;)

Screw the creators of the game saying that Hyper Sonic isn't canon, it's canon in my head! Basically a headcanon. This specific zone is genius! You're *Hyper* Sonic racing through space, stopping Eggman from potientially creating a doomsday! Danger is at it's peak, and it's up to *you* to stop him! This is why Sonic 3 and knuckles is my favorite genesis game, of all time. Crazy to believe that this game was made in 1994; especially the music! The music is a banger, and it gives a sense of "last chance, final stage, our last chance for hope all or nothing, now or never!" Sega was a genius back then! Gotta give props to them.

To this day, there has been NOTHING in gaming history that gave the same feeling of getting to Doomsday Zone. The fact that you have to go through so damn much, get a whole other cartridge, and make it to the end makes this feel so damn epic... like the battle to end all battles kind of situation.

I've never played Doomsday Zone and I've always believed the Death Egg Robot from Sonic 2 to be the most epic final bosses from the Mega Drive era. But I must admit this is epic too, The music and everything going on really portrays that this is Robotniks last resort, That if everything goes wrong he'd fall back on escaping with the Master Emerald with a machine that literally is impenetrable to even Hyper Sonic and its own weapons are the only thing that can damage it. And upon the eventuality of that being defeated, He still has a final trick up his sleeve with the modified Death Egg Robot designed to go as fast as it can for him to try and escape with the Master Emerald

I would like to point out that this is technically the first time you go anything above base sonic in a final boss, not even super sonic this is hyper sonic, imagine being Eggman thinking you got away since your in space with 2 highly built mechs, but a rainbow god comes dashing at you, it’s nothing like you’ve ever seen before when you recognize it’s sonic, like damn

There it is, the final battle. Both rivals seem to be serious about this, each with their own story to tell. If Sonic doesn’t stop Robotnik, he’ll take over the entirety of Mobius. If Eggman loses, then there’s no hope he can make a comeback after that battle. This was such a great and smooth way to end the Genesis series of Sonic The Hedgehog. This game is replayable and fun to complete over and over again. You can think of many scenarios in the Doomsday Zone. If one of them loses, it’s doomsday for them. The music is incredible and suits the vibe here. Picture this: If Sonic loses, he’ll run out of rings and be stuck in space, with no one to help him. The Tornado doesn’t have enough power to reach space, so it’s a terrible game over for Sonic. If Eggman loses, he plummets down to Earth, with everything gone. Thinking about the mistake of betraying Knuckles, so he could stall Sonic a little longer. Well, that’s all I have to say about Sonic 3&K.
