Imagining farmer Karl Hader's encounter with his great+grandson's success through characters like Stefon and Vinny Vedecci is a bit like that SNL skit where Justin Timberlake plays his own ancestor explaining to other immigrants how his descendant will "bring sexy back."

It's incredibly moving to watch Bill being so exposed and openly sensitive because he's very introverted and doesn't show that much emotion. The one thing that strikes me the most is that one of the soldiers in his family was named Jack, and for the entire first season of Barry, Bill wore a metal bracelet in memory of JACK. We haven't learned about who Jack was yet but he was clearly his friend from the army and was very important for him, and the fact that he wrote an entire series about a soldier without knowing anything about his roots is incredible enough, but the fact that he choose the name Jack out of all the English names out there to follow his every step during the first season (and Barry taking the bracelet off in season 2 means something as well) not knowing that Jack was truly a part of him is just pure magic. It kind of makes you a believer again, don't you think?

I remember when this aired. Thank you so much for posting this. The history Dr. Gates uncovers is such a gift. It's something Bill can share with his children.

Interesting that Bill knew nothing of all these soldiers and yet he wrote Barry...about a tough marine.

on the paper documenting carl hader coming over from germany, it kind of looks like it said "harder" instead of "hader"😳 i can totally imagine a german called harder (which in german just really sounds like a normal last name to have) coming over to america and when appliying to citizenship in america, subtly changing the name to "hader" so its not just a normal english word anymore....maybe? just a fun thought :D

I remember Cindy Crawford being related to Charlamagne - King Edward the 1st. I wonder if they tested had permission to compare Bill’s DNA with Cindy? 🤔

Back at that point in history most of us with white ancestors are related, the only question is whether we can trace our genealogy far enough back to confirm it from a paper trail. Basically, if you can trace your family back to reach a certain time period, the well known records take you the rest of the way. The basic formula that shows how many ancestors you have n generations ago will knock your socks off with the sheer number (which helps to explain how so many people are related to Charlemagne)

@@bartwilson2513 Interesting. I haven’t been able to trace back my English, Irish or Scottish ancestors at all. I just knew from my family my great grandfather was Spanish and English because of our name and that he served in the US navy. I’m predominantly Filipina and a lot of thee records were either poorly kept or destroyed during Japanese occupation. My ancestry DNA test shows my UK heritage and I’ve found his naval records , ship manifests and US census and death record but nothing at all to indicate his parents names for me to trace back. Is there someone or a reputable agency I can pay to try to locate more info? I live in Australia and bought access to UK & US & world records and just couldn’t find anything before my great grandfather. How did you trace back your ancestry records? I am genuinely curious.
By the way that Cindy Crawford show with connection to King Edward I was in TLC not PBS.
      Thanks

@@CruzR1111 I am not a biologist and would be sincerely curious to know how much information can be carried by mitochondrial DNA. My husband is white and has asian-looking eyes, but nobody in his family recalls any relation to Asian people. We are left with the idea that Mongolian invasions may have reached some of his ancestors , but I honestly wonder how far can DNA reconstruction go

The Charlemagne thing isn't that shocking. If you can get records that go back far enough for your family chances are you can link to Charlemagne and/or Genghis Khan

An Uncle was there,. He told me about it. That young man must have just wanted to get the war over with and go back to Wisconsin. It was cold and muddy. There was a terrible virus just like now.
