- Joe Manganiello shares his great-grandmother's (Terviz "Rose" Darakjian) harrowing survival story from the Armenian Genocide and the heartbreaking events that his great-grandmother endured.
"The Turks came into her home in 1915 under the guise of World War I and tried to enact the genocide that they had begun," he says. "They shot her husband dead, shot her. She laid on the ground, pretended that she was dead while seven other gunshots that went off, which were her seven children."
By playing dead, his great-grandmother was able to evade suspicion from the intruders. "She laid there unmoving and the Turks left the house and left the eighth child, who was an infant in the crib, to starve to death, which is just the way that they did business," Manganiello, 46, explains.
The woman "strapped the baby onto her back" and fled.
"For people who don't know, there were these death marches where they would just handcuff, chain the Armenians together and march them out to the desert, and release the Kurds, give them military coats, horses and guns, to then go do what they wanted with their mortal enemies, the Armenians," he says. "She escaped that."
While fleeing, Manganiello's great-grandmother had to swim across the Euphrates river. Upon making it to the other side, she discovered her youngest child had drowned on her back.
"She had a bullet in her still, and to my understanding, she lived in a cave with other refugees until she was picked up by German military," he says.
In an internment camp, Manganiello's great-grandma became pregnant by a German officer. "She gave birth to a very blonde, half-German child," the actor adds.
Good God. Joe's ancestor each deserve their own heroic film.
YUP!
That was one of the most fascinating episodes I’ve ever watched. I love seeing them fully geek out but Joe is such a nerd for history and you can tell. Seriously that super hot yet intelligent . ❤
Joe is literally from almost everywhere in the world 😅
I just hope Joe's great grandmother (whom was a freaking badass fighter strong woman) and his german great grandfather had a moment of loneliness and weakness when the baby was conceived, because even though the alternative is probably more plausible, I hope not.
Exactly what I was thinking. Germany was not an ally during the Armenian genocide I'm afraid
I think it's not in this video, but in another clip they quote Rose saying that the soldier saved her and protected her
This is the fact that in the research of Armenian genocide they are escaping (just simply it will light on the implicit participation of Germany in the genocide...) but due to recent political events nowadays they are reviewing it again. Though some researchers I remember 15 years ago when feminist movements were in there climax, plus the reviewing of sexual assaults in human history started they mentioned that a number of young Armenian women were taken into German camps. I don't remember the name of that researcher unfortunately, but she, being a genocide researcher described it as "organised brothels", and pointed out as a another war genocide crime act (as a part of abduction, mass rape- typical for any genocides, and precedents for studying other genocides). Though in the time when there was no metoo movement, where a young Armenian woman was facing a choice either to go through desert, without food, water, clothing and starve or be raped and killed by Kurdish gangs, or to go to a German camp, where at least she would be treated as a human, given water, food, anything she needs, and let's assume all the accompanying interaction that would happen in those camps would be natural, as natural as happens between a man and woman- nothing new in this, all human history is based on that...Joe also mentioned that the German officer treated his greatgrandma kindly, so that she was always of a good opinion about hum. Here is a complex question, not only social, but civilisational.
Having a child probably was comfort, saving grace, after loosing 8 children.
What an episode... I didn't even know that Joe is half Armenian
His name, stature and complexion one would assume he was full blooded Italian! He's not Italian at all!! What a massively shocking reveal! Very exciting episode!
@@Littlething41 His great-grandmother was Armenian and some other minor part, that's a little bit more than 1/8 , not 1/2... And his grandmother was Italian, his grandfather not so much, so he's 1/4 Italian... I don't know why you comment, when you don't even watch the full show...
@@matthiasblum6555 he isn't, his father is not biological. so he's 0 italian.
@@matthiasblum6555he’s not Italian at all. Have you watched the video ?
@@Littlething41 his grandfather whom he gets the 'Manganiello' name from is not his biological grandfather so hes not Italian from him but his grandmother who is a Bonnano would be Italian.
I'm not surprised Joe has west African roots, he is gorgeousssss
Maria Birdsong, I love that name. Thank you for uploading!
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! What a powerful and emotional episode!
Thanks for the full episode!
Wow wow wow. I am blown away and heartbroken at the same time... I will educate myself on the Armenian genocide. And what a crime that turkey does not acknowledge it nor give people access to the documents 💔
That's the first full episode I watched, and I loved it. Thank you for posting!
Thanks for posting! Good episode!
This demonstrates once again that the finer human specimens (beauty, health, intelligence) come from the mixing of interracial genes. As an italian I am also another living proof 😀
Joe is a class act.
This is the most incredible episode. Joe's family history is astonishing! He is a world citizen!
Thanks for uploading
thank you!!!
How awesome would that be if Joe put the story of Plato Turner into a TTRPG Campaign. 😁
Two of the greatest dna lottery story's xxxx
Amazing episode
Thanks for share 🙏
Joe I need the memoir now
fantastic!!
Two gorgeous men
Both of these men's stories were amazing.
I can see Rose in Joes eyes
I thought the headlines were saying joes ancestors were black
Some of them were
I love how Joe knows so much about his Armenian heritage
Imagine killing your husband ,7 children in front of you ,and escaped with 8 child which drown.. and after been left pregnant with german soldier ... what a life
Imagine joe will go to german town and find any cousins
seemed happy about his german roots but not so excited about the rest
Who was his grandfather and what happened to him? And how did his grandmother met?
I was expecting joe manganiello to do a magic Mike dance upon learning his ancestry lol.
Great grandma resemblance to Joe
Italian, African-American, Armenian, German, English... that's why is gorgeous
Mix
Does this mean Joe can say the N word ?
That's why i always thought he looked more like eastern european
Great episode but I don’t like how Joe reacted to learning that his great grandfather must have been a light skinned black man. His body language is saying he has an issue with it.
In my opinion, he was confused that his father is not Manganiello. That changes a lot . No matter Colour od the skin
imagine you just found out the person you belived is your ancestor is not. you belived over 40 year of your live your part italian and then you found out your not your african. thats something the brain has to get around. expecially if you have had no clue you have black ancesotrs. because your granparents are very light skined. Not so much but italaiens are not as white as swedish f.e. So its natural taht he is doubting and challanging it for some moments to let that sink in.
He already got a lot of information before. about his german ancestry.
Def noticed that he wasn't excited about his African ancestor :D He only got happy about him when he found out that the black ancestor was a U.S. soldier :D Or maybe his dad, who thought he is Italian, is kinda racist (especially Italians from Rhode Island) and he's worried how his dad is gonna react to finding out he's actually black :D :D
Nothing about Tony Gonzalez paternal roots.
the story of man
Joe looks nothing like german dude, but more like Italian one
How meny have you meet?
They can be talk, chizeld...have dark hair...
His body is not Italian, as they are not particularly talk, not in south...
Now I can use the ‘N’ word for Joe in peace
Wow Joes family tree is fascinating and so much trauma
Best reality show ever
Black King right there ✊🏾Joe
😂😂😂 a black King indeed 😂😂😂
My nigga
