Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we follow up on Plugging In Your Acoustic Guitar Part 1. If you want to watch that, please go here. • Better Plugged-In Acou...
Amplifying acoustic guitars is a problem area for literally anyone who plays live with the ol’ flattop. Dan and I both do our fair share of acoustic gigs so we thought we’d start looking at some basics, many of which we covered in Part 1.
In this episode we extend our look at some floor-based devices to help enhance your plugged-in sound, alongside some more general tips, ideas and discussion around the whole subject. We chose the LR Baggs Align Series pedals because they’re new, and the T-Rex SoulMate Acoustic because it’s what Dan uses live. So without further ado…

I would love to see a video where you take a cheap-ish guitar with a cheap undersaddle piezo and make the absolute best of it you can.
Yes, yes, and YES
Agreed. So many options. I watched one vid where a guy used a Nux Optima Air and just replaced the piezo pickup sound with an IR of a great sounding acoustic. Rather spiffy sounding. I have been interested in that pedal ever since.
Exactly... into a flat eq pa. That would be REALLY helpful
I don’t know why you guys are getting flack for doing these acoustic episodes, this is hugely relevant to a large chunk of players and the tips and various insights provided here are enormously helpful! As always, keep up the great work and we will continue to enjoy it!
Also, don’t ever stop the tangents. Always fun, every time. 👍
It’s a simple answer: there is absolutely NOWHERE to hide playing acoustic!! And as Mick shows..., not everyone needs to hide behind loudness and effects!!! Just my 2 cents though. I could be wrong but I would bet the negatives all come from loud distorted rock bands
More acoustic stuff please. The search for the “perfect acoustic sound”, guitar, wood, strings, cables, pedals, amps etc. go crazy - its good and helpful to watch
More acoustic stuff please :)
I was describing the effect of a good compressor pedal for a folkie friend - she usually just has a tuner between acoustic pickups and amp. I said it helps with those sorts of mistakes - hitting a note too hard or soft. She latched onto that, saying "Can I get a compressor pedal for my life?"
Hahaha!!!
She's onto something - I'd love one of those!
Think it's called Zanax.
Thanks for going over acoustics. I say keep going with it. But that’s just my vote
Would love to see an updated version of this. So much new stuff for acoustic. Thanks for all you guys do, really appreciate it.
Indeed. I’m binging all these in bed and thought the same thing.
So the LR Baggs Session is the MVP (most valuable pedal) in either of these two parts at least for me. That thing just makes every tone better and it's super impressive.
"It's a lab. The American Standard Strat of the dog world." ROFLMAO!!!!
I like the tangents you wander off on.
“This isn’t Andertons you know”. I’m pissing myself. 😂
I didn't get it, what was the joke? Went over my head
@@filipjohannesgrydeland mine to
Its another youtube channel
Right? LOLZ!!! "I like these little knobs..." ...the minute it left his mouth he doubles over in laughter. Haha!
I'm with you Dan! I've been using my TRex Soulmate Acoustic since it first came out and it has enhanced my acoustic guitars' tones, the ease of my setup and my enjoyment in playing live acoustic music twice a week at a local club. I've always been an "electric" guy, but this little machine has allowed me to trick everyone into thinking I'm efficient on the acoustic guitar lol. Great job guys and cheers from northern Canada!!
OH PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do the "How To Get Weird With Your Acoustic Guitar" video series soon!
You guys are the best! still waiting for that tweed show :D
A few months out at least. Need to source amps, arrange visits etc. Cheers!
I def want this in my life
let me know what tweed amps you might need
you should both wear bad tweed jackets for the occasion
please make a compilation of all the off topic banter and call it That Pedal Tangent
BRILLIANT IDEA! 👌🏻
Ha! I was going to post something similar, but then I saw you had already nailed it. What is it with all the weird Anderton banter?!
BEASTLY playing from Mick ❤️
Blimey, thank you!
I agree. That Martin Sounded Ridiculous ( however ) They are both . . . Really Good Guitar Players.
Al lotta nuanced fiddling which is required for a discerning tone.. I got a lot from that.. Thanks guys for diving in and going the distance! Really helpful !!!
I love you guys, and your off topic banter is just fine with me because your pedal and guitar expertise is first rate . Thanks for being human instead of studio heads. Thank you for exploring the world of acoustic guitar sound. Your playing is great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
It's not the dog it's the maintenance :-)
I’m in s Folk rock band and do sound for a lot for acoustic acts. The rule of thumb we have always used is to find the “quack” frequency and dip it slightly. I will always recommend a Fisherman Aura Spectrum DI. It has the best natural sound simulation I’ve ever heard and is becoming an industry standard.
I’ve got one too. Getting great results in my 6 piece band and solo or duo shows. I’ve got a Larivee L03 with a simple piezo so this is the minimum I would need on stage for consistently good tone wherever we are. Delay and boost would be a nice to have
I loved today's show! Mick you're one hell of a player. I can use these tips for playing here for the snowbirds coming in South Florida. Pretty good stuff for the one band man thing. Thanks guys!
This has been one of my favorite episodes from you guys. Seeing you work with the LR Baggs pedals and then the Soulmate was something I really wanted to see and hear, especially from two guys I so highly respect. Thanks so much!!! Blessings to you both from Texas.
Man that LR Baggs stuff sounds great
I know this is an Acoustic Episode, but you have got to Check out the New Wampler Pantheon Overdrive. I rarely get geeked-up about (yet) Another Overdrive. Im very Impressed. " Super-Versatile " Mick your Martin OMC-28E with LR Baggs Anthem pickup system sounds like a $3,159.00 Guitar. Wow. Fantastic Sounding Acoustic and Guitar playing.
Mick's playing with the reverb was just GORGEOUS. Crikey.
Thank you Nick, very kind!
Perfect episode. Just bought a steel string acoustic (play nylon normally) watched this whilst setting, up restringing and testing it with my pa and preamp etc. Thanks Dan and Mick.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing these acoustic guitar episodes!
Thank you so much for the eq segment! Dan, you were saying exactly what I’ve had trouble with every time I mess with acoustic eq. Once I start tweaking it, I can’t tell what sounds best. I got so frustrated with it that I finally gave up and set everything to center. This was so helpful!
More acoustic please, especially some of the IR type pedals that model a mic + guitar from pickup signals
Another great video. Thanks for sharing, guys.
This was really helpful and has me looking at the SMA more intently now. Thanks!
You guys need a tangent bell.
This may be your best episode. I play 95% on my acoustics and this was really eye opening. Great playing Mick!
Guys, as always, EXCELLENT grand rounds of these tools. Keep up the good work.
Thanks again for another great pedal show. All my fridays have been better since you’ve started this. Maybe I have an interesting idea for an episode: a conversation with a FOH mixing guy/woman during a soundcheck (of a very patient band). I’d like to see how eq is used and there is problably much to learn anyway.
Great stuff! This is so necessary as a lot of us do spend time play acoustic gigs in rowdy bars! I use the tangle wood T6 acoustic amp which is basically the AER 60 but cheaper and with less headroom. Can get you heard in smaller pubs and for the bigger/super rowdy stuff it has an XLR out too.
This is great guys! So many acoustic gigs out there, always cool to talk about some approaches!
LOVE THE ACOUSTIC STUFF. MORE PLEASE
Watched this for the second time today. The first time I watched it was for the LR Baggs pedals, the second for the SoulMate. What a great two episodes. Wouldn’t be averse to seeing a modern take on some acoustic stuff looking at what’s changed and what’s not since this time.
Thanks for another helpful acoustic show.
Nice one! The Baggs Session sounds really good!
Mick’s humor is something special. Also, really useful acoustic pedals. Great showcase!
5 days out of town for kids soccer carnival. So glad to be home and here.
love it! more shows on acoustic guitar pedals and EQ. for those of us that are not practical players would love your opinion. BTW Mooer flanger you suggested on previous show rocks hard on acoustic. thanks guys
Such nerd. Such great. Thank you for doing this mini series mates.
Another awesome show. In regards to using a microphone live I’d be interested in your thoughts on the Audiosprockets Tone Dexter.
The K&K with the Session sounded incredible
? I’m just here suddenly eating ice cream and Part #2 . This Video comes on time ! I’m ears and ready to learn .
I would love another acoustic rig show where you go crazy with the pedal board. I'm playing a '99 Larrivee DV05E into any AER Compact 60 for about 10 years now. My signal chain is guitar > tuner > Clyde Deluxe > SP Compressor > FT MDV3 > Plimsoul > CH1 > TR2 > DD6 > MXR Carbon Copy > TCE Spark Mini Boost > AER (powered w a Truetone CS12 with the Plim, Spark, MDV3, and Compressor all at 18V). Recently (accidentally) won another Plimsoul on eBay and actually may run it with the other back to back to create a boosted low gain/high gain OD option. Would love to hear your thoughts. Maybe pitch the Plims and get the Tumnus! Love your show...more, More, MORE!!!
Oh, and I do just play the guitar mic'd as well because it has such a great natural tone. All that gear is for my 5 pc band w 3 guitar front.
Nice one. I picked up my acoustic and plugged it into my pedalboard, connected that to my interface and learned a nice song in the process.
Love that. When new gear experiences inspire music.
I really needed this. Thank you, Gents! Electric guitars and related toys are all about fun and frivolity during free time for me. Acoustic guitar is about the other 90% of where I live my life. Absolutely love the sound of the OMC 28 and completely underwhelmed by the Collings. Kinda shocked by that.
Each to their own Jim. Seems that people either like the brilliance and treble, and others less so. It would interesting to hear it through three different pairs of headphones too - the difference can be staggering!
The BAGGS PARA is the most brilliant box I have ever used for ALL guitars
that came through my door when I ran an open mic. From the shittiest Seymore
Duncan or even vintage Lawrence (stick in the hole pickups).....the Baggs Para is a GAME CHANGER. Truly. This thing can make ANY acoustic guitar (with any pickup) sound like a diamond.
Love this series! I think the baggs Di works best for impedance matching, especially when using dodgy pickups or blending multiple source from a mixer to a PA or direct
I once sent a signal to a second amp via a Line 6 Reverb pedal set to shimmer. I was on my own so it was voice and acoustic from the amp and shimmer from the electric amp. It worked reeeeeeeeeeeaaaalllllly well.
Great show again. More traditional direction than I use my acoustic and pedalboard for, but still great information and content.
Incredibly helpful show guys. That "session" pedal is gold- a quick and easy way to get great, useful tone shaping! I'd love to see a show where you find a player who specializes in adventurous, outside the box, acoustic live performance- lots of fx and looping etc- just to push what we all think can be done with such a seemingly traditional instrument.
I know you’re not “That PA Show” or “That Recording Show,” but I would love to hear and see your take on how to EQ different things (acoustic and electric guitars, on a soundboard and on an amp). Y’all are wonderful educators and are very knowledgeable, but is turning a bunch of EQ knobs really as intuitive as you make it look? It’s still a mystery to me.
We could probably do something on this. A guide to key frequencies. I like this.
Great! Add it to your long list of program ideas and keep up the great work! By the way, I play a Mesa Stiletto Ace - an amp with an EQ so adjustable that your UA-cam colleague, Johann Segeborn, said it was easy to make the amp sound bad (if you don’t know what you’re doing - EQ-wise). It took me years to get a sound I liked, which only happened after watching many episodes of That Pedal Show and making a connection between my brain (various tidbits of information from you), my eyes (looking at the knobs), and my ears (the sound of the amp). I wish your show had been around when I was starting on this guitar journey so long ago. :)
yes please!! i have a 3 band EQ w/ sweepable mids and contour knob on my Genzler acoustic array pro. i decided to get the align EQ because i felt like i wanted more control over my EQ. i am not sure if I am over thinking it! truly understanding the details behind frequencies and how the affect acoustic guitar tone would be most helpful. thanks guys
Hi Mick and Dan! Thanks so much for part 2! I, too, have been doing tons of acoustic gigs and have really enjoyed these videos. I'm currently putting together a new pedalboard for acoustic gigs and got a full compliment of GigRig power supply gear. FULL ISOLATED POWER, BABY! I'm also loving my AER Compact 60/3. Great amp.
Dan here, cheers Darin, yeah, gotta get an AER, that thing is killer!
Hey Dan! Great to hear from you! The AER is awesome. You'll love it. I'm also using the LR Baggs Comp/Saturation pedal as well as the Venue DI and the Session EQ. They really add life to your tone. I've been dealing with Joe at TheGigRig and just picked up 1 x Basepack 2, 4 x Isolator, 1 x TimeLord , 1 x SupaNova and 1 x Doubler for my board. I'd love to get a G2 and the 3 "big Strymon"pedals, but money is tight so I'm using a Line 6 HX Effects as the center piece (someday for the G2!). It sounds really good with with my Martin 000-42 with the Baggs Anthem and the Baggs pedals play very nicely with it.
Thanks again for all your fabulous videos! Cheers!
I had a Mesa Rosette. Had. It sounded boxy, just like yours. As an experiment I bypassed the speakers and ran to my fender acoustasonic ultralight cab and the tone improved immensely so the problem was in the speaker section, not the head. The AER sounds so much nicer. It would have been nice to run both setups through the AER. The Soulmate is a nice unit. I have one. The looper buttons are poorly located where you can, and will, accidentally step on the boost and tap switches. Switch toppers help a bit.
That Bags session is a buskers dream! Well done on comong back with episode deux. Possible for you gents to do a show just on speakers down the track por favour?
Excellent episode guys! More please!!!
We might. Really crap view count. And we need lots of views to stay in business, so we’ll see! Thanks for watching!
Outstanding. Well done! Thank you. BTW, good job on Sioux Falls... you nailed it.
Superb tones!
Thank you for all the diligence / effort you put into your videos! You seem to be the kind of guys / blokes that you could have over for a beer, or coffee / tea (trying to respect both sides of the pond lol) and shoot the bull with (UK equivalent). It does seem that flys on a farm is an international menace! 🙂 Lived near a farm in Vermont years ago. What a pain...Did a gig there, gotta to watch out you don't sing one in! Love the double entendre humor 😆 cheeky as Thomas the Tank Engine!
it sounded beautiful I am picking up a new acoustic guitar in two months I have reserved ideas about playing acoustic guitar so I am picking up a traditional looking guitar hopefully it still in the shop
Soo..... how about the Martin though the HiWatt?
fuck yes
You nailed it....when Mick just played into the amp (no pedals) by saying that is a good sound. Meaning....good guitar, decent pickup, decent amp.....that is all you need. The pedals (and i own the earlier versions of the LRBagg's pedals (no reverb)) are just fine tuning. The most useful, giving the biggest bang for the buck, is the LRBaggs EQ....
I have a Bichon Frisé, and my band's called Horsedog so I loved the dog tangent! :P
That Dog Show - blindfold bark recognition.
More acoustic stuff please....This was great.....
A Gibson J-45 Standard into an AER Compact 60 via a T-Rex Soulmate - Sonic acoustic heaven!
Niiiiiiice!
I love you guys! Isaw these 2 shows when they came out, and wondered if you had ever tried a Fishman Aura Spectrum. It has a tuner, volume, EQ, compressor, and 3-notch feedback suppressor with its own foot switch. But wait, there's more! 1/4" mono input and output with input trim control and balanced XLR D.I. Eleven acoustic guitar models and a user defined model and a blend control. Never a quack or even a peep. My RainSong is pretty bright, but I can get a good balanced tone with the Aura and it has never failed.
absolutely brill guys, being at the mercy of the PA/ sound "expert" down the local open mic night is always something to look forward to. Obviously the built in electronics on your chosen guitar plays a massive part, I'm currently trying to find some love for the Taylor expression system 2 on my 510e, guitar plays lovely but plugged in I cant get rid of that digital/processed/modelled kind of tone. Its doing my head in, think I'm going to try one of those LR Baggs session pedals, they sound the business. I'm also using a fishman loudbox mini, but because I'm not impressed with the expression system, I cant judge if I like the amp or not. Yep, still down that hole after umpteen gear/guitar changes. Your two acoustic vids have been a big help. Many thanks
Thanks for these acoustic series of shows, very good information and discussion, greatly appreciated. I took a keen notice when you were discussing the LR Baggs Session and Equalizer pedals, they sound impressive for sure. I think I already have those area covered with a Keeley Compressor Pro, Empress Para EQ and a Strymon DECO (for saturation) and a Strymon Sunset if a little extra gain is needed. Would you think that would provide all of what the LR Baggs Session and Equalizer are doing or am I missing something? Thanks again.
Great show as always gentlemen.
Most eq that we would use are reductive anyway, especially amp eq. So we generally only cut anyway. Which is why I get so frustrated when people say "set it to 12 n go from there. Also when u learn about amp manufacturer and the pots and how it all actually works. I set my amp eq to max and then cut the from there. As proven on the one amp one pedal show with mics two rock.
Please continue your acoustic guitar for live gigs reviews. They're very informative.
Hope you read this but I think you guys could cover anything...awesome show again!
Thanks again. Amazing show as always.
And I still recommend the TC electronic bodyrez to get rid of the piezo quack :-)
I’m going to get one - Mick here. Lots of people talking about. It sounds similar to the Baggs Session in theory.
hey mick, if im not mistaken for the Anthem, even if you roll in all the microphone, the low end frequencies are still taken from the undersaddle (a range that microphones typically struggle to pick up), so u get the best of both worlds!
amazing stuff once again. im an acoustic player thats been getting into electric recently; seeing that same inquisitiveness and enthusiasm for acoustic is really nice :)
Cheers guys, useful stuff, thoughts: LR Baggs anthem sounds great, effects need blend and EQ for me, anyone distorting my bass end is asking for a slap. Mike Dawes' setup is mind boggling, kind of matching his playing :)
I feel that you should do another show like this but for nylon stringed guitars. That's a different ball game in terms of sounds and playing.
They may as well do one on banjos, nylon string guitars are probably just as foreign to them
Great show guys. The EQ is a very powerful tool, I use it more like a boost tool for fingerpicking in a live setting. That way I can keep my picking lighter and play with more expression.
That’s a great use of an EQ pedal. Cheers Dan’
awesome show!
These are great
Great couple of shows these were. So I'm not the only one having to play the hollow wooden things !!
Love it. Very helpful and practical. It's a nightmare trying to get a good live plugged in acoustic sound.
You both seem to like your acoustic sound to be kind of dark. It sounds great. For some unknown reason I find myself trying to get sparkle out of my EQ. Presence. I'm also one of those guys who happen to love the sound of a fresh set of strings. I love the sound of finger squeaking and a bit of fret rattle caused by Lower than normal action. This video you guys made has inspired me to try a different EQ. Less brightness and sparkle and more low end and darker colors. Or maybe it's just the sound I perceive through these headphones.
Really enjoyed this show. Definitely a topic that doesn’t get enough love. One other option I wish you would cover is using acoustic guitar impulse responses to model the dynamic of a mic’d acoustic. I’ve had great results and would love to see how it stacks up or blends with the options you covered.
Given the fact that Dan and Mick are playing top-drawer guitars, with top-drawer pickup and preamp systems, the Session sounds fantastic! I would be interested to hear it with a mid-priced electro-acoustic. For those of us mere mortals with average guitars and pickups, I would recommend checking out the Zoom AC-2 Acoustic Creator Multi-Effects Pedal. It's a modelling system that does an excellent job of eliminating that piezo sound. It's roughly the same price as the Session, and has reverb and a boost. There's a great video by Bruno from GLB Productions that demonstrates it in a very unbiased way, and his review is very detailed. I know I'm late to the party on this one, but for anyone coming to this late, food for thought.
OK, you've changed my guitar trajectory yet again! I am forever grateful. Now I'm looking for a solution for when I'm playing the church gig acoustically. Since my church board sports a modeler (Ampli-Firebox) plus a good assortment of pedals (and fits on a PedalTrain nano), I'm thinking about trying some acoustic guitar impulse responses. Specifically, I'm looking at 3 Sigma IRs. Have you guys played with any of those? I'd love to know your thinking on such.
Dan, try a Mudhoney on your acoustic sometime. :) I use mine to solo, gain at noon, boost button IN. It's fantastic.
I use it at 12 volts too! Lol
These were super helpful videos. I have a nylon string guitar with a simple piezo and a Fender Mustang GTX 50. The Mustang has a decent “Nylon” preset, but I dropped a dialled down overdrive model pedal in the “pre” section and it sounds ever so much better.
I've missed Mick's acoustic playing. The sound through those LR Baggs pedals was massive.
Thank you!
Fishman Aura pedals are definitely worth checking out. Blended into the original signal I was amazed how they open up the sound, giving the sound more of a natural air.
Yah - I used em a few times and had a couple of the pedals. Nice stuff!
Useful as I know absolutely nothing about playing an acoustic live as I tend to use electric even for acoustic parts.
By the way looking forward to seeing you guys tomorrow and best of luck
Awesome, cheers Peter! I am furiously learning parts. Brain isn’t what it was - Mick here. :0) Look forward to seeing you!
I'm 100% with Mick - I avoid too much low end myself, especially in guitar amps. Even when I'm playing bass, a lot of sub bass just sounds bad to me.
If you do the “crazy acoustic” show can we get some love and respect for Ben Howard, the man pushes the boundaries of using effects with acoustic and production techniques and his new album is a masterpiece. Doesn’t get enough credit when it comes to his playing in my book.
Grace Design Felix/Alix/Bix would be good to have on next time you are doing an acoustic show.
so good would love to see one with pickups on the low end and how and if you can get them to stack up with the high end stuff .
That’s a great shout. Lots of people have asked for some mid-price stuff.
I love this pair of shows, many important issues discussed that I needed to be reminded of. I like to play both acoustic and electric and want to develop a pedalboard that supports both using my TheGigRig G3 and Schmidt Array 450 EDM as a base. I would love your thoughts about how achieve this? I'm mostly a fingerstyle rhythm player, with a nod to Bert Jansch. So, obviously reverbs and delays are more interesting to me than distortion and overdrive, but I do like a bit of boost once in a while. What I have in mind is a wet/dry rig with two electric amps and two acoustic amps. However, it occurs to me that it might be possible to configure an acceptable three amp wet/dry/wet using the above four amps. What would you suggest?
Another brilliant show! Thanks guys! If you guys ever need a good 5 piece rock covers band (2 guitars, bass, drummer and singer) for live setting explanations and information for the world, my band is called “One in ten” (Foo fighters lyrics) we play in the northwest of UK and we would be more than happy for you to use us 🤘😎🤘. Thanks again for a great show 😉
