I run 2 beaters with liability insurance only. When I say beaters, they are still clean cars that are fully maintained by myself. But, I paid little for them. I think $2500 each last year with an additional $1k in parts to get them sorted. I can sell them right now for $4-5k each

I've never had a car payment in my life. Used, private party sales, drive em until the junk man won't take it. Got the house paid off before I was forty-five. All because I never got stuck with a car note. Only a fool would rather have a shiny car than serious cash in the bank. It's crazy.

This right here!!! I'm a die-hard Dave Ramsey fan and follower as well and I've never had a car payment either. I've always paid cash because I just don't want to have the burden of a payment. In addition, if something what happens when I am laid off or God forbid, physically unable to work, then I will be up a creek and feel terrible I caused my little boy and I to be without transportation because I chose to take on a car payment instead of choosing function over beauty to avoid said payment.

You can't take it with you. At some point, you will regret not having spent some of the money you've earned.

I been driving an 08 ford focus with 312k miles on it and will continue to until it explodes. Who cares. I have a Point A to B beater and have AAA if it breaks and a damn amazing mechanic. End of story.

I bought a 2020 Sequoia Platinum for $64.3k in 2020, interest rates were still low. With excellent credit (800+), the payment would have still been $1221 a month for 70 months. Thats 85K. I paid cash. Interest is killing everyone these days.

I've been driving three cars, two are Audis from the 1990s, I do all the work myself. Paid $1000 for one of them 6 years ago. Also drive an 18 year old VW... paid $1000 for that one also. Liability, cheap to run and maintain (do my own work). Finally bought a new Subaru for the wife... but we could afford it. Saved up on the side to get a new car in the rotation... I could pay it off, but the interest from Subaru was 2.9%. I put the money into bonds instead making 5%... making a little off of the money, and it's there if I need it to pay off the car sooner or for another emergency.

You aren't getting much that is brand new for less than $500 a month. That's $30k plus cars. Regular civics are $32k now. You don't even save much buying used in this market. We make about $135k a year and $500 a month feels steep.

Yeah If you are young or have a bad driving record full coverage could easily cost $300-$400 a month.

See here is my argument on a pickup, especially RWD ones. I have owned one FWD vehicle in my life, 99 Honda accord. That car cost twice the money to just maintain in 5 years than my current 04 F150 RWD has in 7 years. The complexity and the drive train set up in the FWD stuff just drives the labor cost up, at least that's what I have seen. A basic RWD pickup not these monstrosities Idiots are buying now seems to cost less the maintain. You will spend more in gas obviously, depending on how far you drive it might offset it. My Father always bought 3\4 ton 2WD pick ups. He always experienced the same thing, and he would drive those trucks 350k to 400k on the original drivetrains.

It's crazy nowadays. Back in 2004 I bought a Mazda 3 brand new for $13k. Payment was $250 a month and I made $250-$300 a week. I hear these high car payments and I don't understand it.

Bought a new F250 4 wheel drive in October of 1978 at Lucas Ford in Burlington. I think the payments were right around $200 a month. I think I took home about 250 a week then. It was affordable, but I really didn't like owing money on a truck. It got totaled right after I paid it off. My next truck was a 1975 chevy K20 that I bought for 300 bucks with a 292 that had a rod knock. Bought a 250 six for 50 bucks and it was almost a bolt in except for having to move one motor mount about 3 inches. Then I got to thinking, It was almost as nice a truck as the F250 I paid like 8,000 for, and I've only got like 500 in this thing. So screw new cars, just a rip off. Never bought anything with a payment again.
