  • In September 2002 I joined my friend Mike Harting for a trip to Minnesota to ride the "Farewell to Erie Mining" special trains. Friday afternoon in Duluth we hooked up with our local friend Keith Benoit who kindly arranged for us to ride the Aerial Lift Bridge while photographing boat traffic. We found the John G Munson (USS Great Lakes Fleet) preparing to depart DMIR dock 6 after unloading limestone. She was headed for Two Harbors to take on a load of iron ore. After getting a DMIR ore empty heading up Proctor Hill with six! units, we headed for the bridge. The Munson finally came through exhanging salutes with her distinctive steam horn and the bridge's unique air horn. After a few hours of friendly chatting with the bridge operators, the John J Boland, (American Steamship) came out of the moonrise over Lake Superior. Sadly, Mike and Keith are no longer with us, and this video is dedicated to their memory. R.I.P. gentlemen!

Loved the video especially when you were on the bridge with the ships passing thru. On occasion Conneaut Harbor (now under CN) gets visited by some of the 1,000+ footers such as the Edwin H. Gott and the Edgar B. Speer to name a few. I also enjoyed the 6 unit run by. It is good that you dedicated this video to your friends Mike and Keith's memory. I'm sure you spent many enjoyable hours with them pursuing your love of ships and trains. Thanks for posting this.

WOW! That may be the coolest video, I have seen in weeks. They let you ride on the bridge as it went up and down. Great shots of the ships and control room!
