My theory is that (because of the origins of how it was formed) the jougan has a unique connection to the pure land And boruto, being an organic/natural being (unlike the Otsutsuki) destiny is to upon his death go there like all other characters from the Narutoverse that we know But because of the jougan he will have the unique ability to travel to & from the pure land ‘even after death’, essentially making him immortal So I think Boruto will actually die (likely against Jura) & afterward, I believe we have a pure land arc inbound 🤝🏾 where we are reintroduced to some of our favourite characters (particularly visual prowess users i.e Itachi, Madara, Hagoromo, Hamura etc) that will help him master the jougan so he can return (sorta like Goku & Snake Way) And people might think this is too broken but in actuality it’s not, yes he can return even after death, but… 1. He can only return to & from his body number one because thats the body the jougan eye uses as a tether to the world of the living, meaning someone could even seal his body so that when he returns he’s trapped anyway 2. He’ll still age as normal & so at some point he’ll likely pass on his eyes as he’ll be too old to carry the mantle or just not want to anymore 3. We’ve seen characters with literal invulnerability on a molecular level, having Boruto have the ability to die & come back isn’t gonna make things unbalanced 4. We are dealing with what I imagine by the end of the Boruto series will be a literal threat to existence itself which includes the pure land, so it won’t be seen as ‘get out of jail free card’ for Boruto forever anyway

I was originally thinking that too, it is a plot hole in the theory but I think there are multiple scenario(branches) and first being that Boruto's eye getting cut may have affected it from awakening as it may have supposed to awaken but because it got damaged trying to save Sarada it didn't (one branch timeline), It also could have awakened been before or after the eye cut(another 2 branches for before and after) and he still died as he had no control over the eye and Kawaki was stronger. (another branch) which I think Koji tells him his new eye might awaken later once he dies again because Koji didn't tell us if his eye awakened or not, so it's possible when he dies in the future, he maybe able to control it because Koji teaches him his future techniques beforehand. So boruto may have some sort of experience on how to handle it once he unlocks it. The last idea I had was that momoshiki is blocking the eye because he knows it's a threat to him. So when boruto died, the eye was blocked and so when he dies in the future it might be without momoshiki there and thus the eye awakens. And its possible Koji can't see the inner world like eida(we assume) so he doesn't know if momoshiki purposely blocked it or not back then in ep 65. But I mostly going with the momoshiki idea. But it's just a theory, kishi/Ike will figure implement some sort of idea on how it awakens but I think it has to do with getting rid of momoshiki first because once he rids of him, boruto is not afraid to use the karma then as we seen in ep1/chp1.
