    Great video!!! I bought a $5 light timer from Walmart & plugged my light in to it. I have it set to come on when my alarm clock goes off, 7 days a week. Since doing that I get up easily in the morning now. I used to just lay in bed on the weekends & waste half the day. Then it would quickly be Monday morning & I would wake up depressed because I had wasted the weekend, again. The timer was a game changer for me.

      glad to hear this! i just found a light AND timer at goodwill today, i had this idea, but when i started watching youtube vids a lot were talking about sunrise alarms (more gradual). i wasn't sure if my planned setup would work, but glad to hear it worked for you and excited to try!

    biggest thing that helped me out with depression was to get rid of all of them sun blocking curtains from my home... all of them... as a matter of fact, in the kitchen and living room, i took out all of the curtains and put planters on there... bright light does help a lot for my mood... i wake up feeling great, and don't want to stay on the couch all day... also, in mexico, we are used to waking up with a cup of coffee, and sitting outside either in a porch or somewhere out in the sun as well... and i started doing my coffee outside on the burner of my bbq grill every morning... love it... i'm way more energized thru the day because of this...

    I've lived in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and England.. all places with long dark winters. I do best with consistent exercise, vitamin D, studying (school or skills), and anything to boost my spirit like meeting up with friends, family etc. Always good to learn new recipes.. and I like to be around people even if I don't interact.. like going shopping, gym, library, park, cafe. It boils down to the classic mind-body-spirit really.

    Ways I fight depression: 0 sugar, 1 bowl of salad a day, exercising 5-6 days a week, daily dose of fish oil and multivitamins, and intermittent fasting (16-18 hours a day). Now I have also ordered a bright light lamp to complement my regimen.

    Hi!
    Thanks for a great video. I’ve just bought a therapy lamp and I’m hoping it helps to lift my mood at this dark time of year. Other things that I think help are:- having things to do, being with other people, intelectual stimulation (learning), volunteering, (helping others takes my mind off myself)
    Being with my grandkids, being kind to myself and others and trying to be grateful for what I have. Best wishes to everyone. Keep going you’ll get there! ❤️ x

    I am dealing with depression right now. I am hoping the happy light I have will help. In the meantime I am keeping busy with exercise and cold showers. There happens to be a sauna in my house as well which I believe helps with serotonin. I am also using antidepressants with a low dosage.

    Why do we need to buy expensive lamps ? Can we just use a few very bright LED bulbs.

  • @edpowell5754
    @edpowell5754 Рік тому +1

    From Buffalo, N.Y. I have the same light and was informed about buying new bulbs as they loose their light ability over time. Well, I did buy new bulbs that fit that light from Amazon and sadly to say the new bulbs are (MUCH) dimmer than the original bulbs that came with the light. So I put the original bulbs back in and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Also sadly to say the quality of the manufacturing of that light needs much to be desired when it comes to bulb placement. Putting peices of rubber under each light to help hold them in place is really bad engineering. // I use DAYLIGHT LED light bulbs in all the table, ceiling lights in my house which also makes a difference.

      I feel you. And thank you for being skeptical, as one should be whenever one is going to be doing a treatment for mental health. Did you watch the entire video? I did cite at the very least one research study from 2015, showing that light therapy is just as effective at treating acute depression as cognitive behavioral therapy for acute depression. The link to that study is in the description of this video, which is featured on a site with a .gov extension, not part of the Carex blog. I recommend checking it out for more info.

    Awesome timing to see this video. I just got the suntouch plus from a thrift shop...trying to pair with other good practicies too to see if it helps so im not sure if its helping me yet..but what does the ions setting really do? Do you know? Is that helpful ? Or is that just a fluffer feature so to speak lol

    • @hoopsmiles
      @hoopsmiles  4 роки тому

      I really don't know what the ions feature does. When I have used it before I didn't get much out of it. I mainly only used the light. That's good you found it in a thrift shop. In one of my other light therapy videos, I recommend people go find lights used first. I found a verilux deluxe happy light for $40, which I think used to be around the $150 range. Here's the problem with used lights, which I forgot to put in my tutorial. The LUX measurement of the light goes down after time. I believe it's recommended that you change your light out ever couple years. So if you buy used, who knows how long the person had it.

  • @johnhewitt564

    Why must it be for morning only ;could i leave on when trying to sleep at night. I asks this because. I find that when i sit outside in the hot sun i fall asleep easily and qwickly.

    • @hoopsmiles
      @hoopsmiles  4 роки тому

      Honestly, I use happy lights throughout the day other than morning. They make really nice bright lights. I have used them before for video lights too as they create a natural daylight feel. If you wanted to try using them at night, that's up to you. In terms of when I did cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, I don't think it would have been advised from my doctor to use a light like this at night, but instead to use it primarily after waking up in the morning to help reprogram my circadian rhythms.

    • @stinky6002
      @stinky6002 3 роки тому

      It's because the light can push your sleep time forward or backwards depending when it's used. If you use it when you first wake up, it will shift your wake time earlier. If you use it too late, you will have a hard time going to sleep earlier.

    • @hoopsmiles
      @hoopsmiles  3 роки тому

      Yeah I believe you can but you need just make sure it's 10,000 lux. Anything less than 10000 LUX, I don't know if there is research to support the effectiveness. Likely you will have to sit close to it so you would need to probably put it in a lamp you could sit close to. Ideally, hopefully the light would come with directions to let you know how close you would need to sit next to it to get 10000 lux. All lights might have a different lux rating at different distances.

      Get a blood test of your D levels, if they're low, take a 5000-10000 IU of D3+K2. Take with fat soluble foods like meat, butter, eggs, etc. Also would be better to take early-mid day, vs at night. May mess with sleep cycles.

  • @IlyaPermyakov

    How do you know it has 10000 lux, all lamps have this number, but when people measure them - they don’t provide it

    • @hoopsmiles
      @hoopsmiles  4 роки тому +1

      That's good question. For the Daylight Classic Plus, it tells you on their web site how close you need to be to the light to get 10,000 lux from their light. In regards to verifying the lux rating, I don't know how to do that. After using the light for a certain period of time the lux rating can diminish. I don't remember what is recommended off hand from the Carex website on when to replace the bulb, but they provide that info as well. For some lights out there, I would be weary about what you are getting, whether it is really 10,000 lux or not or is recommended by doctors. Not all lamps out there are 10,000 lux. One of the lights I showed in this video by Verilux, which sells the "Happy Light" brand is rated a 7,500 lux light. You pose a good question I don't have an answer for. Regardless, I can definitely say my experience with the Suntouch plus, the Happylight Deluxe by Verilux, and the Daylight classic Plus by Carex have been successful in helping me wake up in the mornings and restoring my circadian rhythms.
