Attention Deficit omg this happened to me what do I do please help I’m so scared I’ve just potentially destroyed my bike it happened when I was tightening the spinner back up
"im not too picky with my oil, its a grom, itll be fine regardless" but has chosen literally one of the best oils on earth for a motorcycle. good job dude!
Also...watch out for the oil port metering valve...it can fall out of the cover when reinstalling....it will kill your grom if it comes out... it's in the front of the case near the cylinder. Make sure it's in.
My third oil change with 26000 klm's.I also removed the cover from my oil spinner, some grit in it.Very clean after regular oil changes and a clean K&N air filter.Rock on,ride ya Grom, ride it safe.
Awesome man! And I'd clean the spinner every couple thousand miles or so, might be overkill but it really doesn't take that long once you have done it a few times
If i ride any machine alot i usually change oil between every 3-4 months, check the screens or case at the same time so you get a good update on the health, "hard" breakin has been the key for me and never had issues. Knock on wood😂👌
Just thinking about the penny method… Couldn’t one put the transmission in a high gear and while they are loosening the bolts for the spinner press down on the rear brake pedal?
Should snag that kitaco cover to remove the oil spinner + add oil filter, makes the job so much faster/easier. Also don't have to mess with the case seal.
As I recall locktite is an anaerobic adhesive, meaning it doesn’t need air to cure. Just clean the screw threads, apply a drop of locktite toward the end of the screw, install the screw and torque it down. No need to wait until it “dries”. Actually if you torque the screws to specification locktite is unnecessary, but it won’t hurt anything. (Caution: Always use low strength or blue locktite. If you apply red or high strength locktite it will be very hard to remove the screws next time.)
Great grom maintenance content! All my buddies that ride for sure have never done this! I keep telling them just get in there, its not that hard! Thanks for the great video! If you have some time, peep, a few of my newer grom videos, thanks!
Appreciate this as I'm planning to do the oil change myself at 4000 KM. Great tip about removing swingarm and the penny thing. Great views on what you were working on as well. Love to see a chain adjustment vid in future. Or even if you ever change tires too :) Merry Xmas!
That is a centrifugal oil filter, and Honda Cub engines have had them since he beginning of time. They spin the shit out of the oil before it heads down the crankshaft to the main bearings and big end, and they work very very well. Pain in the arse to clean, but no need for a costly crap filter. Loctite hardens once air is excluded, that is why the bottles are half full when new. No need to wait 24 hours AFAIK. I get you use the bike, and it is no tarts handbag, but if you are taking cases off it is a smart move to give it a bloody good clean first just in case.
@@chuckbowen4334 Honda recommends cleaning the spinner and screen only once every 7,500 miles. Even if you were to replace the gasket every time (I wouldn't unless it's f'd up), that's still less than how often you'd replace oil filters.
Thanks Brother. This was nice to refer to for my new Honda Monkey 125cc. Perfect video!!! Surprising to me that the pesky 1st gear rough take off from a stop went away. I thought I was stuck with that nuisance due to a too tall 1st gear but the oil change made it run SWEET!
I liked the penny idea but opted to buy the kitaco gear holder instead. Sucked spending about $30 on it, but after hearing the lost penny reply I'm glad I did. Just did my first 600 mile oil change on my honda monkey. Great tutorial. Only thing I had to do different is hold onto the rear set bolt as well on the shifter side since it was spinning in place while I tried to unbolt the rear set. Great video and guidance. Tnx
Hey, Thanks for the video. I'm having a hell of a time getting the rearset off of that pivot bolt. I don't seem to have enough slack to pull it all the way off. did you have to disconnect something to give yourself a little more slack? (@ 2:20 mark).
Hey man. I’m going to change my oil so. My local shop only has valvoline 10w40 full synthetic and regular. The full synthetic is a little more expensive. Is valvoline a good oil for this bike or should I buy the Honda brand online ? Also should I go with the regular or the full synthetic?
My father's BMW has a magnetic part inside the casing which attracts metal shavings as the oil flows through the engine. I wish the grom had that because it makes for an easy clean
Gold Plug MP-01 is the part number for a quality stainless steel magnetic drain plug for the Grom. If you decide to go with Gold plug you need to pay close attention to the torque specifications for the oil drain plug(you should with the stock plug as well), as stainless is much harder than the case material and can easily strip the threads if over-torqued.
mine came out clean too. no metal flakes whatsoever but some gunk in the spinner like yours. also i used the penny trick on the bottom side too when tightening back up. i put a strip of the lintfree towels in the back cuz i was scared my penny might be gonna do a bad thing LOL
Two yrs and no replies?😳 You probably know by now but it is a thread locking compound you put on the threads of a bolt then tightening the bolt. It sets like a glue and reduces the ability of vibration loosening the bolt. As for the strengths, blue is the go to for most applications. It holds hard but still able to crack it loose without risk of shearing off the bolt head!
What’s the difference between synthetic and non synthetic? I’m about to do my first oil change on my grom and going to run valvoline 10w40 but have to choose full synthetic or regular.
It's actually better to run non-synthetic in the Groms because they have a wet clutch but run whatever makes you feel better. I'll stick with the cheap stuff👍🏻 Valvoline 10w40 non-synthetic is what I run and I love it.
I'm machined away most of the weight on the oil Slinger amazing how much more pickups zip power your bike has removing the two pounds of metal hanging on the end of the crankshaft

Yo AD! Nice vid man, thanks came in super handy. I did drop the penny in my case too but was able to find it and dig it out w a pair of needle nose, no worries and I like the penny suggestion worked super well! In addition, I used the penny between the gears from the bottom when tightening the spinner cover and it allowed me to torque the 3 bolts down and avoid using loctite (I heard it’s a b&!@$ to loosen loctited bolts later on so wanted to avoid using it) One Q for you, when I was done I found a lock washer on the ground. Don’t remember it coming of the Grom when I was taking stuff apart but not too sure. May just have been laying around randomly from something else. Do you recall removing a lock washer during this job? Thanks again AD!

HOLY SHIT! The sight of 'metal shavings' inside a 'HONDA' engine almost is enough to cause me to need fresh underwear! A 'HONDA' engine? "Say it ain't so!" (in fifty-years of riding and driving...I've NEVER seen that much build-up of 'shavings' in an oil-pan or filter...that's an insane amount of serious damage going on!) It took a few seconds...and I put '2 & 2' together...and the answer is YOU ARE DELIBERATELY 'BASHING THE GEARS' WHEN SHIFTING! That's the only possible answer for 'where and why the fuck is all this metal coming from?'You said so yourself..."I beat the crap outta' this!" (you ain't kidding!) Instead of allowing 'case-hardened' gears to 'gradually wear-in' from repeated meshing...you're putting enormous stress on them with 'speed-shifting' and 'clutch-popping' which then serves as causation for surface-layers of 'hard-steel' to 'flake' from the impact of 'slamming one gear into another'...like slamming two hammers together 'face-to-face'. (Here is a 'quick and easy' tip...get a 'nasal-cannula tubing' from a drugstore...take the finger-pump from an empty hand-soap container and insert the 'pump-tube intake' into the cannula-tubing (it's larger and the pump-tube will fit snug) and then insert the tubing into the oil-fitting w/the dipstick out...and start pumping!)This is a 'practical application' of the 'Inverse Square Principle' in that your finger-pumping is creating at least x3 'atmospheres of force' at the tubing's end and it WILL'suck that shit out' of the engine! Keep 'probing' around until you're 'drawing air' and you're 'good to go' for a re-fill.The huge advantage? You can do this with a 'dead-cold' engine and the tubing will'suck-up' anything that has 'settled' at the lowest -point in the engine.(this will work with ANY engine...but...with a larger motor it will take longer! A LOT longer!)
Also, after I did my oil change I can kind of hear more...sandpaper? Type noise. Like that stock salt shaker noise but a bit louder. Bugging me. Might just get a louder exhaust
GUYS! Don't you ever use a penny to block that shit. I just did like this today and the penny dropped inside the engine, all the way down and there is no space to get out it took me 4 hour to get out. So use there something BIG. It was a nightmare to get the penny out from there :( .
That penny is a BAD idea. It fell inside my engine, It took a LOT of time and work to get it out. At least use a larger coin like a gold dollar or a quarter, and maybe put a string on it, better yet make or buy a wrench to hold the spinner in place.
DISCLAIMER* If using the penny method be very careful as you may lose it in your case!

Did you have to adjust your clutch cable after? Mine wasn’t working and I adjusted it. Not sure if it’s me or my head but my handle seems more stiff
No I did not, you might need to check the lever / rod on the case you might have oriented it wrong.

Torque? Capacity?
A few ugga duggas
Yet to do mine. 🤷♂️

Ladies and gentlemen the penny went into the case 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Grabs a penny
5:25 it's a Honda... What'd you expect?
Is the Locktite necessary?
Yes due to the vibrations of the engine!
Threadlock or actual Loctite super glue?
Threadlock!
Attention Deficit Awesome thanks!
Bro You Look Smacked😂
Instead of a penny, I just twisted a paper towel nice and tight. Popped right off, no risk of a penny getting lost and easier to grab.
My Peterbilt has a spinner
That's awesome! Really is an effective design.
Fun fact. You don't have to remove the rearset.
You don’t have to but for video purposes I wanted you guys to see!
My penny ended up in the abyss of the case. Great vid tho👌 lol next time ill try something a little bigger lol.
Sorry to hear that. It's a method I've seen used many times so it's nothing I made up. Glad you got it out though!
Also, after I did my oil change I can kind of hear more...sandpaper? Type noise. Like that stock salt shaker noise but a bit louder. Bugging me. Might just get a louder exhaust
This just happened to me ever take it out?
Time for a better exhaust, eh?
It's on its way!
Yoshi?!!
I don’t recommend using the penny method, I now have a penny stuck in between my two case halves 🤦🏼♂️
Sorry to hear that. It's a method I've seen used many times so it's nothing I made up. I'm sure you will be able to get it out!
Did you ever get it out I have the same problem
Blue-Point?? High standards, huh?
They get the job done for sure.
At least use a larger coin like a gold dollar or a quarter, and maybe put a string on it, better yet make or buy a wrench to hold the spinner in place.
pro tip, dont take dumbass advise like stick a penny in the gears. because gravity exists and now holding my bike upside down and shaking it thx
The bike has no Cooling why would you let it idle for 15 minutes
Engine temps were fine bud it was winter😂
