I like the quote, really- I do, I don't 100% agree with that though. It depends on the definition of 'war'. Ergo: "Kill them with _kindness_ ." Imagine IF someone tries to steal your car- but you have a spare thousand dollars and offer it!? There's a possibility that otherwise thief might walk away- Well... of course if the potential thief doesn't though, I'm fine with shooting and/or calling 911 on the thief.

"Do not see the world as it should be, see it as it is." I wish I had learned and accepted that earlier in life. We tend to be idealistic in our younger years and wish that things operated in the "correct" manner. Stop looking at the world in terms of how you think it should work and work within the framework of how it IS.

Its basically realism mate, and without saying its stupid you can actually learn from it and better yourself brother. Everything can be used as learning.

Oh No you Don't! ("I wish I knew someone like him".) There are Plenty of them 'Out There' now. Tagged with different Labels, like Narcissist & Sociopath...15+ yrs ago, a combination of those
2 began to emerge in Headlines, & now the term 'Narcissistic Sociopath' is in the Lexicon. Think "Ted Bundy", & you'll get an fairly accurate picture of the above Labels...I'm guessing y'all are Youngling's...(My term for under 40) I'm 76, & No, not All of us are Brain Dead or Drooling.
I had an Education y'all couldn't dream of, & began reading & studying Machiavelli, & most of his contemporaries (Including a Woman), as a Freshman in HS... (Oops! Hope No Victim's searching for new Wounds see THAT Word!)I'm perfectly serious when I say you all have been Robbed of a true Education, in some cases, to the point of Abuse! That & the outright Lies used to destort History I know 1st hand, has left you handicapped, & some of you may be realising it..Especially true for those 20+ & under... Bottom line, In a Culture where All Truth is Relative, the Definition for what constitutes Good & Evil are the 1st casualties, & without intervention, the ensuing Chaos will be impossible to stop without a Dictatorship & there's always one available...
Be careful & Slow to call an Idea "Good" & Learn Who, will gain What, by Pushing it.

The interesting thing about Machiavelli is he preferred to use history rather than lofty ideals as some philosophers might do in his theories. History gives examples and he studied these examples to make his arguments. He proved the genuine value of history and showed how it can be used.

One thing we should add, is that one should never, ever, ever be hated. One can be feared, but that fear must breed respect begrudging or not. Fear prevents actions against you. However, hatred and fear breeds rebellion as the penalty for resisting you is seen as preferable to life under you.
Ensure that whatever action you take, you never breed hatred. Never be arbitrary, never act overtly unjust, never take any action which can result in you being hated, and if you have to, always ensure that someone else takes the fall for it.
Though act cautiously, as if anyone figures out, those who work under you, may also turn to hate you. Basically, don't act dirty just for the sake of acting dirty.

If some hates you that means you've already defeated him or her. This is written in the Japanese proverbs of ancient wisdom. But that's for you to decide. Me I could give a poop of who hates me, cause it's better that I'm the one hated rather than me hating them or whoever. When you hold hate inside you all bottled up it is so toxic inside and this turns into terrible sickness for your own health, it can make you obeast. No offence but anyone will hate you just because you exist but didn't even do anything wrong to anybody, it's just the stupid hate they have over you that your still alive and ok.😳😳😳😳😳👼👼

In turn, I think more than feared, you must yearn to be respected. Love is something for selected ones, fear is a tool to avoid being attacked, hate however is only for the ocasional 1 or 2 people who are too isolated to harm you.
Respect however is something you must get as much as you can. If you stand your ground and balance compassion and ruthlessness correctly then even people who might not like you will not try to harm you either, or at least would think twice to do that.

I could've learned from this guy. I tried to tackle inefficiency and bullying in my new management role. Boy was I wrong and while I may won the hearts of some of staff, management was surprisingly opposing even though they asked in the interview how I would resolve their issues. If I just kept to myself and pretty much did nothing, I would've made it through the ranks but I wanted to be a hero for someone. I also learned to never ever change anything when new even if the majority seems to agree with you. It's a dog world out there. The managers that knew how to lie and play the popularity game made it far......it's sad but goes along what this guy is saying: play the game that is being played even if it's wrong otherwise you won't succeed.......
I recall asking my son to always share and let other kids go in front of him when they were trying to get to the front of the line. My dad told me to stop as no one else does. Play nice only if others do

On the flip side, it's harder to conquer a state with appointed bureaucrats and regional governors, as these bureaucrats are loyal to the incumbent regime, but once you've prevailed, and appointed your own bureaucrats, it's easier to hold onto.

I think the quote itself can have a much more positive interpretation.
"If you want things to be good, you need to prepare yourself to do what must be done."
Never execute innocents nor try to make an evil utopia alright, but something as simple as self-defense from a dangerous criminal might ocasionally result in taking a life. You don't advocate for vice nor go in your way to ruin lives, but you must not be soft against people who want to destroy you one way or another.
Or as an old saying from someone I don't remember, well, can't remember the exact words but it goes like this: "Always talk about diplomacy while carrying a big stick."

“To be GOVERNED is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be place under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first word of complaint, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality."

This is real thing , this is reality n Matthew McConaughey said it right "The World Was never fair , it's not now and it'll never be" . After reading the book , I can't say I'm changed but coz if a book Can change you ? I don't think u've a stable personality but I changed my perspective abt certain things . Machiavelli was a genius authoritarian, but only a genius in that way. He wrote his book and targeted his philosophy at kings and leaders as a way to encourage them to have greater authority, more control, and more power. This era was an era of war and colonialism and the world was governed by corruption and fear was a speciality of the bureaucracy while the masses were uneducated and uninformed. His ideas may work in war, but in everyday life or leadership or business, we should not desire to do harm and act in a manner applicable to war.

Most comments here seem to praise Machiavelli. You need to balance that with the consideration that he was a man of his times. Power games in those days carried a lot more severe consequences if your power was undermined or taken away. You could be put to death for aligning yourself with the wrong people or belief. Machiavelli wrote his book as a kind of guide to those close to power looking to advance themselves.
Nowadays there are people living towards a Machiavellian persuasion who don't even know who Machiavelli was - politicians, bankers, lawyers. These institutions are by their very nature inclusive and extremely protective of their financial activities across the globe. Todays Machiavellians are the elitists, subtly manipulating regulations to better suit themselves.
As far as us ordinary folk are concerned, Machaiavellian teaching is mostly immaterial. Unless you happen to be extremely ambitious and looking to change the world.
