    Haldex 3 AWD system
    Traction control ON for the entire video
    I am actually pretty impressed with the FWD-based Haldex 3 AWD on this thing! This is the first time I’ve ever done anything “serious” with the XC90 V8. The slope was about ~35° on both sides with a ditch in the middle, slippery grass, etc. I was honestly expecting it to get stuck as I don’t have LSDs, locking differentials, or any other off-road technology. I think the Haldex 3 system is even too early for the brake-torque vectoring (Haldex 4 I think). The AWD system uses a Haldex clutch that controls the rear differential when the car detects the front wheels slipping, though it sends 95% of the power to the front and about 5% of the power to the rear from a stop unless circumstances dictate more traction. I wish it could shift power from side to side, but this is an older “AWD” system and for its age, it did remarkably well. Would I take it on a crazy off-road course? No. Would I like to take it to some sort of testing area to see what It can do? Absolutely.
    I love my Volvo 😁

    This is why I always have said the XC90 needed the V8 standard. Even the T6 would struggle at times. The XC90 is such a heavy tank and you can see that the power of the V8 allowed the haldex 3 to really operate at its peak.

    • @theKnightDesign
      @theKnightDesign  3 роки тому +6

      It has always felt pretty capable. Granted, I’ve never really pushed the limits of the car and don’t intend to. It is quite a heavy car and feels very solid. The V8 engine does seem to help the Haldex 3 system feel more robust

      @redpepper007 2 роки тому +2

      its not so heavy actually, far from a tank. About 400-500kg more than a golf 4. But a tank is about 60 tons lol.

      T6 is actually stronger than v8. Ith has less hp (304 vs 315) but acceleration times and overal dynamic is better in t6.

    Haldex 3 is proactive whereas Haldex 2 is reactive. This is why Haldex 3 is superior and is more reliable because it is already prepared for the loss of traction

    • @theKnightDesign
      @theKnightDesign  3 роки тому +5

      Agreed. Haldex 3 was the first proactive system, but Haldex 4 is better. Sadly they didn’t offer Haldex 5 on the P2 XC90 as it was retired in 2014 and kept the earlier Haldex 4 system found on MY09-14 XC90s

    I love this V8 but I'm not impressed by the offroad capabilities of this XC90... I owned a Range Rover 1986 (from 1986 to 1996) and I was able to climb incredible steep slopes with the automatic gearbox (4 speed ZF) and the low range engaged.
    Tyres were the ordinary M+S (Mud and Snow) fitted on commercial vans.

    • @theKnightDesign
      @theKnightDesign  2 роки тому +3

      Your V90CC would probably chair better due to Volvo’s addition of better traction control software for Haldex 4 and 5. I don’t have brake-based torque vectoring with the Haldex 3 system, though the XC90 has better approach, departure, and break-over angles as well as more ground clearance.

    The yamaha v8 is durable but, extremely expensive to repair. Example, $3500 for a starter replacement. Other repairs require the removal of the motor. The shop i use is independent, but the mechanics are volvo trained , they will not work on the V8.

    • @ozbusa
      @ozbusa Рік тому +3

      Guess it depends. I had a new genuine starter fitted to my V8 and it was $700au plus fitting. Had the plugs and rocker gaskets done at the same time. I did a fuel pressure regulator, cost me $40 for a oem one. So I think you may be getting ripped off
