    UA-cam somehow destroyed the colors in this video, so everything looks darker and a little more green than usual. 😧 Sorry about that, folks! I hope you enjoy it anyway.

    I recently just graduated as a Graphic Designer and currently doing a gap year. I felt kinda lost with my career path so I think I should start reading more books to gain more confidence and widen up my horizon. SO MUCH TO LEARN. Thank you! :)

    haHA you may see us next year, but i am already seeing you next year FIRST!
    ...nah i just haven’t had time to watch this for the last 5 days.
    in all seriousness though, the most graphic design i’ve done so far was in an intro design class freshman year of college, and it was fascinating, but it turned out that the workflow of design wasn’t really my thing.
    but seeing some of these books you’re showing off, especially the typography ones and logo design ones and “this means this. that means that,” is totally making the artsy, aesthetically-oriented side of me drool in excitement!
    brb gotta go look up some books lol
    also i found it amusing trying to pause the video when your bookshelf was in focus and look through the titles to see what you felt was worth keeping here :)
    also also i haven’t read the “mysterious children” books in literal ages but apparently there’s now a fourth book (?!)
    also also also out of curiosity do you still read fiction at all these days? i’ve been finding it harder and harder to make time for that lately and it’s a true tragedy

    • @MorganGale
      @MorganGale  4 роки тому +1

      Haha my fiction collection is mostly YA right now, so it's kind of embarrassing! I usually go to the library nowadays, and what I have on my shelf is a bit outdated in terms of my taste. I make a point of buying nonfiction and graphic novels so I can reference them later, and I pick up new books from authors I'm particularly attached to (like John Green), but I don't usually buy fiction because I can't tell if I'll enjoy it enough to re-read it. I'm planning on picking up more adult fantasy books though! The Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab was super good.
      I feel you about not having enough time to read lately. I have this problem where I check out like 15 books from the library at once and binge them, and I can't do that very often because it doesn't leave enough time for me to work on projects and errands and such. So I only really read fiction like twice a year. But one of my goals this year is to read more regularly!
      I'm glad the video helped you find some good books. 😊

    • @wyntrr_end
      @wyntrr_end 4 роки тому +1

      Morgan Gale most of my collection (or maybe even all, idk) is YA too, and i used to feel a bit embarrassed but then i found out that a couple of my friends also still love YA and feel embarrassed too so i don’t feel it as much anymore :)
      i might have to look into some more adult fiction type stuff tho, just to know what’s out there and whether i like it. maybe this Shades Of Magic thing...

    • @MorganGale
      @MorganGale  4 роки тому

      @@wyntrr_end Yeah, Shades of Magic is a super good starting point! It's got the same sense of adventure as YA, but the characters are older.

    Hey thank you for the great video! I really want to become a graphic designer but cannot go to school for it at this time. Would you recommend that I teach myself? Thanks!

    • @MorganGale
      @MorganGale  2 роки тому

      You can definitely teach yourself, but a lot of the value of school comes from the group critiques and professors' input, so I'd recommend seeking out groups (online or irl) where you can critique each other's work and ask questions. :)

    I subbed I think in 2014 or '15 when I searched for Youmacon videos and found your channel. So my question is, gonna go again in 2020?

    • @MorganGale
      @MorganGale  4 роки тому +1

      Not sure! I haven't been going to conventions as much these past couple years; I think I burnt myself out going every year since like, age 13. I feel like I've seen a lot of what cons have to offer by now. But I won't live close enough to Youmacon to go forever, so I might go one more time.

    Hi. Nice. I want to ask you something. Is there books on how to make nicely designed books? Specifically, textbooks. I tried to search for it in google, youtube and udemy. I didn't find any book or course.

    • @MorganGale
      @MorganGale  4 роки тому

      I haven't personally read one, but I would recommend looking for books about typesetting and using grid systems. Having a consistent grid throughout a textbook makes it easier to read and find information. A classic book about using grids is "Grid Systems in Graphic Design" by Josef Müller-Brockman. I've also heard good reviews about "Making and Breaking the Grid" by Timothy Samara. I hope that helps!

    Can one become a self taught graphic designer after reading these books?

    • @MorganGale
      @MorganGale  Рік тому +1

      Books will certainly help, but finding a group of people you trust to critique your work is also really important! These books will teach you the "rules" of design but can't replace learning through experience.
