I remember when l was a kid, my grandfather each time after supper, when he used to tell us stories, he would be playing mbira at the same time....just like what Mbuya Chiweshe is doing...very artistic....
This was very helpful, I was going through a situation and remembered kuenda pamatare kunoudza vatenzi Hunan... especially because nhengure kakatorova ngonono despite facing such a war just the next morning... says a lot
I wish I could understand shona. I love this mbira music so much! Such a pity I can't understand which story Stella is telling..but it is still very beautiful!
Its basically a folk tale cum folk song. Its about animals and in this particular about birds and one the Nhengure bird (not sure of its name in English). The story goes that, a long long time ago the days of old when all animal could speak the was a dispute between the Nhengure bird and all the other birds and all the animals. The dispute was caused by the nhengure woking up early making sounds (just as this particular bird does) waking up all the other animals. They greed on the place to meet, the nhandare. This can mean a cleared place, a meeting place in nowadays can mean a stadium. This was the place for the meeting or ‘fight’ between nhengure and all the other birds. Nhengure prepared for the fight but flying high and hign into the sky to appeal to God and the ancestors. That should nhengure lose the fight then all his family and progeny would perish. Nhengure also synched himself and danced in preparation for the fight. When the time came Rukodzi (another bird) stepped forward and Nhengure cut him into pieces (akaita jeka wacheka). The another bird, then when dahwa came (the bird that sleeps at lot), ‘it was laughable... why did dahwa step forward in the first place (as not much of a fight) Please note this is not a word for word translation but thats essentially the jist of the song.
Wow. I'm 39 years now A flurry of Zimbabwe memories just flooded my head, way back to when I was 6 or 7 years old when I first heard the story "Shiri naNhengure". It was a well known story in folklore,s et in the bird Kingdom. I live in the United Kingdom now and being away from my beloved Zimbabwe makes me appreciate more, our cultural heritage and all the works by Mbuya Stella Chiweshe and others that uphold our tradition through playing mbira. You can't get any more authentic than play mbira, music yevana vanyamunhu. I want to attend any of your shows in Germany (I wanna know more about when are the next shows etc if anyone knows)
Storytelling and music are such a vital part of humanity. The beautiful sound reminds me of rain and the natural world growing and thriving around us all. It gives me chills even though the words are not in my language. The emotions are.
Oh I love this! I only heard today of the death of the Queen of Mbira. I was privileged to meet her on three occasions, she even came up to my house in central Victoria when visiting Australia. I love this story, but I can't understand. It seems like it's about birds. It reminds me of a Guinean story about birds. Can anyone please translate?
@@manna2202 yes, I went to a workshop. I had paid etc but they did not say it was advanced so it was a total waste of time and money. She suggested I come have a private lesson with her. So I went to where she was staying for my private lesson but she was more interested in something else she needed there, which I had to search for and get for her, so missed out on the lesson. Then when she heard I had big calabash she really wanted one as she was just playing mbira without it. So she came all the way up to my place in the country but my calabash were cut for making kora or bolon and they are cut in half the other way for mbira. I had brought them from Guinea to Australia, but I also had seeds so I have her seeds. So yes, I met her at workshop then hung out with her a couple more times.
What an adventure it turned out to be, all the ups and downs. Sorry about not having your lesson. I will post the lyrics this week. Do you own a mbira?
@StellaChiweshe: What's taking you so long Ambuya Chiweshe? I wish you knew how much I want this song and the many others you posted here from the same DVD. What's the reason of having these songs on youtube if you don't sell them? Please do something about this! Make some copies and just charge us to cover any extra costs. Can I just buy the DVD that you have? I can pay double the price and make a copy and send back to you your original copy. Honestly, that's how desperately I need this DVD.
