      I had to do some travel a while ago and specifically chose this film to watch on the plane. I was expecting a run of the mill assassin flick that I could forget about as soon as the flight was done. I was wrong. What I got was a thought provoking film that I have have watched several times since its premiere. A kind of companion piece to Jean-Pierre Melville's _Le Samouraï_ .

    I think this movie went over a lot of people's heads, there's lots of subtle humor and details to appreciate in service of a very standard revenge plot. I really enjoyed it, especially for the FL scene and Tilda.

In the day and age of fast life with tiktok and everything, ive been noticing a trend that people can’t enjoy films like Martin Scorsese Killers of the Flowers Moon or The Irishman. Same with this film. Great film but people crying about not enough action.

    Dear Netflix,
    Please include director commentary tracks for your films. You already offer alternative audio tracks for foreign dubbing and Fincher’s commentary tracks are never less than great. It would add so much value to your service.

    • @cambodianz

      @@joaocorreiamedia Physical Media almost always includes foreign language dub tracks. Keep in mind not everyone is literate. Film was created as a medium for working class people who couldn't afford the opera or symphony or state play. Many of whom couldn't read, yet film gave them art and entertainment that inspired them and enriched their lives. It's important that other people with less education than you and me have access to these stories too.

    • @cambodianz
      @cambodianz 9 місяців тому +1

      @@joaocorreiamedia But that's going to be true of every film presented to an alternative language audience. The director isn't spending all their time and efforts and money crafting images so that the audience will be focused on the very bottom of the screen reading words either. With any kind of foreign communication, an adaptation of some kind will inevitably take place. Which is why I advocate having as many options as possible. Providing the option for foreign dubbing doesn't necessarily remove the option for a subtitle overlay. Some people will prefer to read the subtitles, other people literally can't.

    • @cambodianz
      @cambodianz 9 місяців тому +1

      For example; I make sure to have subtitles for any foreign movie I watch, but absolutely make exception for animated films. I want to marvel at the painstaking animation, not focus my eyes at the bottom of the screen everytime a character is speaking, so I always go with english dubbing for animation.

    This is a film that I felt was perfect for Fincher to direct, because it wasn’t just the usual action flick of “hero saves the day”, but a deeply meditative, soothing, and slow burn tense film that explored the point of view of the assassin, and how he is so stoically and emotionally detached from reality. It adds a meta layer of how he feels being an assassin, the psychological toll it takes, and how it colors his view of life through a cynical, post modernist and nihilistic lens.

    I can't say I was overwhelmed by this movie, but I had the need to watch it few times. What I am missing is some realization, either of the character or his enemies, but then again he is a killer... perhaps there is that emptiness that can not be filled. I was expecting at least to see some rage coming out of him, or maybe the opposite, but it ends just as it begun, with a steady pace, next to his girlfriend who oddly seems tranquilized by his presence, and so is he by hers. Odd film.
