Great video. Nice and quick and concise unlike a lot of UA-cam videos where the presenters seem to REALLY enjoy the sound of their own voices. Perfect.
It looks more like FLAT MATT posted the video by possessing Nick. :) It is really nice to see a new video here Nick. I am interested in what you didn't like about the router with the leather? Would changing the speed of the router possibly have made a big difference? Thank you (and FLAT MATT) for a new and inspiring video.
This may be a really weird idea, but I keep wondering, what would happen if you literally froze the leather before routing? Now remember, there are no stupid ideas . . . only ideas that we all make fun of. :-)
Hi Nick! Nice video. I've got an idea to make this project easier for you the next time. Use your router to remove the wood you cut out with your table saw, and make your work product long enough to make multiple pads. Cut the board into pieces which precisely fit your vice, and then continue as you do in your video. This might make the project easier and simpler.
Hey Nick, great project as usual. The reason the router chewed up the leather is cuz it's too soft. When we need to machine rubber, we stick it in a minus 40 degree deep freezer. For your leather, you could probably use a household freezer (like in your kitchen) then route it immediately after removal. Once it's too warm, just repeat the freeze and make more cuts until you're done.
thanks - that's one of the ideas I was going to try in the future - when I was in high school, (true story) I was milling some strut mounts on a Datsun 260z to get more room in the strut tunnel for negative camber - when I went to acquire some liquid nitrogen from the science department to freeze the rubber, I was denied - been wanting to come back to that one ever since
Somehow your emails started going to my spam folder, and they stopped popping up on my subscriptions list on youtube...glad I heard you explain all of this in the live hangout the other day...i checked the bell, so hopefully that will put a stop to that! Nice lil video Nick. I just restored an old rusty vice, now I have to make these for it! Good stuff bud!
Thanks man - yeah I don't know how the spam thing works - I guess I do t know how the feed here on youtube works but glad you heard me on the live show about the email newsletter on my website and the bell button
These are absolutely essential in my shop. I cut a lot of threaded rod and if I didn’t make something like this, I’d totally mess up my threads. Great shop tip.
You come back with a short video and hit me with 2 great tips. Routing the leather is awesome and I never though of it either. And the playing card. That's a simple one that everyone can use. Thanks
I'm glad you could pick up a couple ideas - more so, I'm glad you commented about it - I almost didn't bother making this a video because I was worried it was too small of a project - that's the hardest part for me to figure out, what to show and what not to - sometimes I like just being in the shop putzing around - thanks!!!!
We had some formed aluminium jaw covers for our vices at work to make soft smooth jaws for holding polished surfaces or special parts for finishing operations especially good when handling items that may slip in leather when working
How did I miss this? I have the bell think clicked. Anyways... great video. I picked up a couple of different tips from this video. I love simple project videos like this that have tips that I learn from and also that spark ideas for other projects. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Nick, I have been concerned with my work pieces being marked in my vice and have tried unsatisfactory buffers. Your solution to the problem is brilliant. Great presentation, great to watch, very envious of your equipment and attachments. Max from NZ
Very nice! A little perfect project. Thanks a lot for showing and the idea. These pieces of plastic cost 14 Euros in Germany. 16 Dollar? No way. Thank you, Nick! Greetings
Great project Nick. My store-bought soft jaws have about had it and I think a set of these are in order. Really enjoy your videos and always learn something too. Thanks again. Eric
Awesome idea perfect for what I need. Diggin the the router lift that's sweet. Awesome video. Side note: shhh is this what Mike was referring to?? If he's definitely right!!!
I think routing the leather was a great idea. And what project doesn't require a bit of judicious use of sandpaper? lol I think it turned out great, Nick!
Great video, as per your usual. I will definitely make a similar set for my steel vise. You said you used basswood for it's softness when working with easily damaged materials. Will that wood crush easily in the vise? I was curious as to using poplar as an alternate. I guess the key is not getting medieval with the tension on the jaws. Keep up the good work, and by all means keep the videos coming. Videos like this short one are great for picking up ideas. I have a huge list of You Tube content from you, Jay and others for upcoming shop projects.
thanks much man - poplar would work great - so would pine or aspen - any relatively soft wood - just not something like hard maple or similar - even then it'll hold but the softer stuff gives you that added piece of mind
Thanks man - I got mine locally at Menards but I know not everyone has those near them so I have a link to the equivalent Wilton in the article here - nickferry.com/2017/10/leather-vise-jaws-soft-jaws-to-protect-marring-your-projects-ep81/ - but mine wasn't nearly as pricey - pretty sure it's the same casting though
thanks - that exact piece I have had kicking around the shop for years - I do have a link in the website post to some though - nickferry.com/2017/10/leather-vise-jaws-soft-jaws-to-protect-marring-your-projects-ep81/
Those turned out great 👍. Where did you get the leather? I’ve never bought anything like that, but now I want to make some nice leather jaws for a vice I have.
Thanks - link to the leather in the article here - nickferry.com/2017/10/leather-vise-jaws-soft-jaws-to-protect-marring-your-projects-ep81/ - it's a fairly thick leather

I think the use of the word rocket-surgery is greatly underestimated. Great to see you back Nick
it should move to the forefront of peoples vernacular
Great video. Nice and quick and concise unlike a lot of UA-cam videos where the presenters seem to REALLY enjoy the sound of their own voices. Perfect.
Thanks Paul - I try
Holy cow Batman, Nick posted a build Video..... Nice to see ya back

too many frays in it - worked okay but I think I can do better with some practice
This may be a really weird idea, but I keep wondering, what would happen if you literally froze the leather before routing? Now remember, there are no stupid ideas . . . only ideas that we all make fun of. :-)
That close up of that Stud video maker was great! Nice build Nick.
HAHA - he's a handful!
TThat's the cutest little tube cuttar I evar saw.
isn't it - had that thing for years

Ah, the old liquid nitrogen denial. Hate it when that happens!
Great to see you back in the shop Nick. This project gives me some ideas. Awesome
thanks as always David!
That was a great little project. I enjoy these as much (if not more) than the big, complicated projects. Thanks for sharing!

those work great too - nice tip!
It's Nick!!
Nice little nugget of a vid. Might have to make this a project for one of the lads this week.

Great idea! Add it to to my shop list.

Hi Nick, I have been concerned with my work pieces being marked in my vice and have tried unsatisfactory buffers. Your solution to the problem is brilliant. Great presentation, great to watch, very envious of your equipment and attachments.

Awesome idea perfect for what I need. Diggin the the router lift that's sweet. Awesome video. Side note: shhh is this what Mike was referring to?? If he's definitely right!!!

I like the Gilligan shirt 😉
Lol thanks 🙂
Nice going nick
thanks Eddie!
I need to make some of those jaws, and get a magnetic feather board.
both are handy!
I think I'm gonna have to add Rocket Surgery to my lexicon haha.
haha - brain surgery and rocket science wanted to start a family, and well, you know...
I think routing the leather was a great idea. And what project doesn't require a bit of judicious use of sandpaper? lol I think it turned out great, Nick!
haha - thanks Dave - I think I'm going to be messing around with routing more leather in the future - gave me some ideas for sure
Uh-oh.... Nick Ferry has "ideas"... look out! ;)
you know it!
Great Nick
thank you!
I would like to see how you installed your pipe clamps to your bench.
Jay Bates did that when he was here - ua-cam.com/video/TeprY3nwH9w/v-deo.html

Good Brain Science there too Nick!
Haha thanks!

Very useful little project Nick! Turned out great. I’ll be making some. Nice vice! Where and about how much? Mine needs to be replaced.
Only Rocket Surgeons need the world's best drill press
never truer words spoken! haha
Nick brother welcome back.. it's been awhile...Nice project.. where did you source the leather?
thanks - that exact piece I have had kicking around the shop for years - I do have a link in the website post to some though - nickferry.com/2017/10/leather-vise-jaws-soft-jaws-to-protect-marring-your-projects-ep81/
"Rocket Surgery" - the logical confluence of the Science of performing Brain Surgery on a Rocket
sounds completely logical to me, lol - thanks!
Hell
Ferry 👍👍
👍🏻👍🏻
Was this the project Mike Fulton was recommending or do you have something else in store?
nope, that's another dealy I have cooking in th ol' nogen
Is paper thinner than playing cards
yes
Nice👍
👊🏻👊🏻
Very nice! Where would one find that kind of leather? About how think is the leather you used? Thank you very much.
thanks - list of materials with links in the article here - nickferry.com/2017/10/leather-vise-jaws-soft-jaws-to-protect-marring-your-projects-ep81/
Thanks so much. Enjoy your videos.
I appreciate that - glad I could help
Yay =) Great video =)
thanks much V :)
Nice !!!!
Thanks!
Don't want to double ding your project. I wonder just how complicated rocket surgery is. I bet Doc. McCoy could tell us.
exponentially more difficult than the sum of brain surgery & rocket science, haha
Lol @ Rocket Surgery... are you sure you didn't mean science?
yup - rocket surgery is the combo of brain surgery and rocket science - it's the mostest toughest of them all, haha
Sounds complicated, lol.
Who makes your blue tool cabinet?
the one at 4:39?
Yes
Nick were do you get the thick leather at.
I think I put a link in the article for this - did I not?
Went back and I found it thanks
Awesome - I thought remembered putting it in there
First
Nailed It!
I really like what you do Nick.
Here's my latest. I'm just getting started in video editing. ua-cam.com/video/30AY7mIj0V4/v-deo.html
thanks - very cool man - lots or sawing

Nick Ferry You’re right, No Menards here in NC but I’ll start looking locally! I’m sure I’ll find one. Hopefully a cheap one on CL - haha.
Yeah I'm pretty spoiled here with those - but our Craigslist sucks
