So you just use a regular trash can how it's intended to be used? Genius, but how does it solve the issue the Litter Genie is trying to solve; the smell?
It has a lid.
My concern is the odor. But if odor was not an issue I'm sure this would work well.
The Simple Human can is the best alternative to a Litter Genie that I have found so far. The Simple Human can has a tight fitting lid that keeps odors in the can very well, but when you open the lid to add more litter the smell can escape. I've just discovered an air purifier that is cheap, never needs filters and works REALLY well. I'll be making a new video on this air filter in the next few days so please check it out when I post it.
I do this. Does absolutely nothing for odor.
A lot depends on how stinky your cat's poop is and how often you scoop. Our senior cat's poop had a really, really strong odor, but since he passed away we are just fine with using the SimpleHuman can for our other cat's poop.

The Simple Human cans seem to seal in odors better than any of the other step cans and I do like not having to touch anything other than the scooper handle when scooping. LOL, I've used lots of trash cans and even the plastic buckets that kitty liter comes in.

I save all my Walmart or other shopping bags, put in the goodies, and put them in a can in the garage but this looks great too. Great video, thank you.

Thanks for watching! The step lid fits snugly around the edges of the plastic liner, so we haven't noticed any odor escaping the can. Now when I step on the lid to open it and add more waste, there is some smell. I have an air freshener on the window sill above the litter boxes and that seems to be sufficient for us.

About how often do you have to change the bags w/ 2 cats and little can like that? I'm looking at the Amazon Basics 5 L can for 3 cats but wondering if I should go a bit bigger. I was thinking of one of these step cans, because my sister was showing me her litter genie and it looks like a big pain in the butt to operate.

Litter Genie Pros: double seal (sliding handle that pinches the bag and lid), easy to add more litter.
Litter Genie Cons: tying off dirty bags can be messy, sometimes run out of bag material unexpectedly, you have to touch the funnel portion to add a new bag cartridge, refills are expensive.
Step can Pros: Bags are much cheaper and you can even use old shopping bags (check to be sure they don't have any holes!), you don't have to touch any parts with cat poo on them, much less complicated, no waste from plastic bag cartridges.
Step Can Cons: Only a single seal for odor control, does not have built-in scoop storage.
We had a Litter Genie XL and it held slightly more litter than the very small step can we are using, but that's ok because I prefer to not let the cat poo get more than three or four days old before I toss it in the big garbage can in the garage.
BE SURE TO TIE THE STEP CAN BAGS IN A KNOT, JUST PULLING THE DRAW STRINGS WILL NOT SEAL THE BAG VERY WELL!
@@Koolbob2 Thank you for such a detailed reply. So you get 3-4 days w/ your 2 cats. I'm looking at a 6L step can for my 3 cats. It will be $55 Cdn for the SimpleHuman brand, but I'm thinking of a rectangular one that isn't brand name for $40. Maybe I should go for the quality, as they have a rep of built to last?!

I love cats and I had cats in the past but no more because I don’t want a litter box in the house. It was always a mess no matter what I tried.
A friend of mine who has four cats installed a cat flap that goes from a corner of his den to the utility room in his garage. He had three very large litter boxes in the utility room. It works out really well for him, with no cat litter or smell in the house. I'd do the same thing, except my garage has no utility room and is rather small.
I swore I owuld NEVER have a litter box. Famous last words😆 Found a cat woman on UA-cam using wood pellets. Game changer. They are awesome, cat has no issue using the box. Scoop the poop into a "simple human" trash can with its own draw string bags. Easy peasy clean up, bags are cheap and easy to find. Regular wood stove pellets!! I just paid 5.99 for a 40# bag. Last months. People just need to remember that POOP needs to be removed daily. Talk about saving money. I have been using this method for 8 years. I am old so have had many cats and tried sooooo many methods and litters. The pellet method is truly the cats meow
I put the litter box in a microwave box and put a piece of deep pile carpet under the box. Got tired of litter everywhere.
