I admire your effort you do for yourself and your family too Mr Jason, i see the mountain men show as much as possible over here in Sweden even if we're not at the same season, the furnise you've built shows you're a born blacksmith and shows that you are the man who knows the trade, i hope all goes well for you and your family too sir
This is so cool. I would hope that fetches a good price. That is the kind of knife that goes in a museum 500 years from now. I hope whoever has it is keeping good track of how it was made for future generations
Quenching is only part of the heat treatment, why dont they tell you the quench leaves the knife brittle as a file, basically useless till you temper and reduce the brittleness
Beauty knife! Not too shabby for a basic Smith Shop and pretty much everything in the shop is hand made with pars hes found! Great job! Also beautiful handle on that knife!
Really enjoy watching him work, both here and on the History Channel. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any videos of him building either his for forge or his bellows. Forge seems to be clay over (fire?)brick. Blower seems to be a variation of a Japanese bidirectional bellows. Would be very interested in info on the forge.
May God, wisdom and righteous always be with you! You're on the right track for stupid high grade steel but you're not giving the needed temps, periods and air.... best wishes!
For everyone who wanted to place a order on the knife, come on, it's the history channel. Look up the mountain man real name, "Jason hawk" you have more chance there.
he is making what the Japanese call tamahagene, steel made traditionally from either iron sands or iron ore. It is very difficult to do, and the steel that results is at best a 1040 or so carbon steel, but you know what? A knife with a 1040 steel blade will do everything a knife should do, and will last you your entire life if you take care of it and do not abuse it. I think this is very cool
It would’ve produced much higher carbon than 1040 it all depends on how long it could soak carbon in from charcoal in the bloom furnace among other things
Some would ask why he is putting an ammo can full of oil on top of the fire. This is to heat up the oil, because if the steel is too hot and the oil is too cold, the steel can't take the dramatic change in temperature and literally crack.
naw i forgot the name for it but if the oil is too cold it causes a steam pocket between the steel and oil and doesn't actually quench it as fast as warm oil would
@@WinterXI It's called vapor jacket, and when oil quenching it is less of an issue. Agitating the oil during quenching pretty much alleviates the issue. What was said above is somewhat correct. Some of the reason why certain oils are heated is that they actually cool the steel faster when they are more viscous.
The work it takes to make your own steel versus buying some blanks is not even close to being worth it. High carbon steel blanks are not that expensive, and will allow you to create many, many more knives to be sold versus the time wasted to create your own steel. Still fun to watch though, and rewarding to watch steel being created from ore taken from the mountain.
That looked like a good solid knife but I did not like that handle at all! Too round and to polished ...... it might be a little hard to hold on to in slippery condition like snow or rain! But you could definitely rely on the steel! mea sententia 🦂
Forging looks so complicated, specially when it's a katana being forged. But if the world gets nuked and gets lost to the middle ages, these forgers will stay operating
Hello History, I was scrolling through videos and I came across one video. Specifically your strongest man video in which he lifts a 400 something bag with ease. However, I couldn’t watch it due to it being disabled in my nation domain of the United Kingdom. I have come here to press this query as to why this may be? Please do explain
Hey Jason, if you want to keep both your eyes, wear eye protection for crying out loud! Haven"t you learned yet, holy moly! You do great work though! A little pricey!
@@northernwoodsman Maybe that's true but another truth is he's not very well off. Some would say poor. So speed up the process and he'll be better off.
@@fredormanis5705 These guys actually aren't poor... Its portrayed that way for our entertainment. For example when Eustache had to "gather" up some money to buy a small piece of land that would "really help him out". Thats was BS, he owns over 2000 acres of land... You can go visit him for like 700$ a day or something. He really isnt poor.
The narrator is trying very hard to make it seem dramatic. Trying and failing. There is no reason to even have narration, just do the work and let us watch it. Explain something if it matters, don’t waste your breath otherwise.
Tremendo programa..ojalá siga o regrese..muy bueno...dsd Venezuela..
Pretty impressive work right there!
I agree just the only problem I see isn't the blade shape wrong for a seax
@@stardusk1726 well he did say its 'his take' on it :P
History Channel you need to make a blade smithing show with Jason & family. A ten part season showing start to finish.
Amazing knife, that's what you've earned for not giving up...great my friend...from Philipines

Thanks for sharing your work on the knife it turned out beautiful well worth the effort looking forward to seeing the next peace of work from you
Where can I buy a knife from this guy
Been teaching myself alot of the same stuff in my spare time. Respect to you. So where do we go to get one.
Turned out awesome you deserve it the amount of work you went through to make it,Well done.
A 20mm ammo can looks like it makes a good quench tank.
That's an amazing blade friend ,you keep doing what your doing and push forward, that's money in the bank . Thank you for this awesome video series
Jason's got it
Multipurpose knife; like that old school design. Cheers :)

How can we order from him the same knife,?

That’s good man it feels good to learn
I love this video and i love jason hawk, awasom guy 👍👏
Beautiful knife
Very nice job!
I'm impressed. You obviously know what you are doing
What a nice knife!
I love the time you spend and the craftsmanship!!
Would it be possible to order and purchase a knife from you?

qaib ej hmoob I could totally get a knife. I’m pretty good friends with his son.
By the comments from a lot of people..You sir have a business opportunity. I'm putting myself a order in too. I want a skinning knife.
Favorite part of show, Nice work Jason!
The man refined his own steel. I’d say don’t say nothing unless it’s positive, till you can say you done the same. Nice blade.
Is that knife handle stabilized ? All my knives have stabilized handles , even if it’s desert ironwood.
Bro it is AMAZING
This is just weird having that guy comment over it. He is about 20-30% wayyy too intense.
Agreed. I actually stopped watching less than a minute in because I can't stand his voice.
Damascus from ore is no joke. You had to study for 10 years to make Samurai swords from ore in Japan.

what kind of oil should it be cooled in?
Nice looking blade..will you sell it?
That's awesome!! How much? I want one !
I think we all do!
I'd like to purchase one of your knives. How do I go about doing that Sir?
Very nice piece I want one how can I place an order with you
Super Nice!!!! Love this show!
That is awesome!!!!
Nice knife, does the ore you are using naturally have carbon or did you have to put carbon in it, as every one knows you can't harden mild steel.
Nice work!
Do you take custom orders, not just knives?
Beautiful knife but have you seen any squatches down there?
My favorite mountain man I would like to buy a knife

Boss!
The general consensus is where do we buy your knives
No angle grinder guard = automatic thumb down. Don't forget that people also try to learn from this video.
I want to see her blade and it’s price including sheath. Please
he look like real life ivan vanko a.k.a whiplash
How do I get to buy one of those knives
How many here made a knife from iron ore that they harvested on their own and built their own forge from clay?
Nice work
How do i buy one of your blades??
History Channel you record this man and his family but didn't provide his info so the fans can support him by purchasing his knifes.

Thats cool and all, but I dont see that as being a viable living option unless you can crank those out at a much faster rate than you are doing
Now available at Ozark🔪
Do you makw blanks ?
How much for knife ???
How can you get ahold of jason hawks to have him make a long Bowie for my boyfriend.

Is that grandpa Max speaking ? From Ben 10 show?
you put the blade on the opposite side *massive facepalm*. its supposed to be a saxon blade like you said.
I might give about 20 bucks for it.
The narrator had a super annoyingly dramatic voice. He could make saying, "Fuzzy little bunnies jumping over rainbows," sound intimidating.haha.

Its a huge crime destroying money. FBI should be notified immediately

$800 knife? Nope. Sorry.
He wastes so much time making steel when you can get the best kind from a old car or truck. Or old tools.
Yeah, but its nice making something from nothing.
