    #DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
    Rules:

      Ngl, I tried liking it, but the art style was a huge turn-off. When a game can't grab you immediately by the gameplay, it doesn't hurt for it to be nice to look at and when it comes to custom characters, players need to be allowed to make either, cool, cute or funny... and if it's an Asian game, you can also make it sexy. But this game was just funny and not particularly good at it.
      Anyway, see you in the Death of a Game for Rawmen.

    loved Rumbleverse, played almost daily with my cousin summer 2022 - feb 2023 😢
    It was a massive lack of marketing. Like Epic as publisher didn't even care as they got Fortnite and let RV die 😔
    Still hoping for a comeback one day. Easily one of the best games of past years 🙏

    I played a bit over 1k matches and just barely squeaked out a slightly over 50% top 5 rate. There isn't a week I go by without missing RV. It went out at its best patch too. It introduced the final ring moving in a random direction towards one of the edges of the map, which instantly made every match feel way more unique because you wouldn't be stuck in one of the (admittedly many) predetermined final locations. That one change solved so many problems too. Turtling was an issue before that patch, but you can't just sit and block constantly when the ring is moving, and even if you try eventually you'll be out on the water anyway. It made a bunch of niche grabs, knockback specials, and movement specials actually worth taking because you'd know that inevitably you'd end up near an edge eventually instead of being landlocked like so many final rings were.
    I also disagree with the idea there wasn't enough content, or that the game was a "wrestling" game instead of just a fighting game inspired by wrestling. They were adding in new items and specials every patch, they added a full new map like 2 patches before shutdown (which was also connected to the first map so sometimes you'd be on one, transition to the other, then get forced back again because of the ring moving), and people had tons of speculation on what would be coming in next (Chun-Li's kicks being a constant ask).
    In my eyes the game simply was doomed to failure for one reason. Fighting games have terrible player retention baseline (for a lot of reasons I won't get into), and making a fighting game that's only online AND needs 25+ players just to field a single match is a recipe for disaster. They added bots to get queues going (thank god, before that it was 5+ minutes to find a match, after that it was rarely more than 1) but the bots are nowhere near as good as players of course, so that felt hollow for a lot of people. It took me a while to adjust, but I actually liked them by the end, they were basically free perks and just another resource to fight over like weapons or specials.
    It doesn't help that the way the progression system worked meant that when you entered a new bracket you'd be pretty much entirely cut off from the previous one and that it was XP based instead of win/loss based so you'd inevitably be forced to progress. I'd hit a new bracket, load into a new match, and then get absolutely mollywhopped by the new level of competition for like 20+ matches in a row until I got my footing. People don't like losing like that, I'm pretty immune to it but even I felt discouraged, until I gitted gud it felt almost like getting punished for playing more.
    Also, for some reason it never had a ranked queue. They probably couldn't afford to split the playerbase even further, but there was constant complaining about casuals being matched into killers, and a lot of people wanted a queue to really tryhard in as well.
    I think if RV came back with say ~15 humans per match and 7~ bots instead of trying to fill a room full of 40 people, had the initial rings start 2 sizes smaller, and then just used a MMR system for matchmaking instead of having such strict divisions it'd be able to go a lot further. Maybe also use a less cartoony artstyle (or let people have way more access to cosmetics, because I saw a LOT of fun/cool outfits in the final patch because they let everyone use every item for free, there was an absolute epidemic of Peter Griffins lmao) too, idk.
    But what I do know is that RV was some of the most fun I've ever had gaming (even the early patches where dive bomb nuking people from offscreen with weapons was wildly overpowered), and the gameplay itself was incredible, the patches were constantly making things better and increasing playstyle diversity, and Iron Galaxy were always amazing at responding to the players and improving the game. But never again will I get to bean someone with a homing chancla then combo them into a inazuma drop that slams them into the ground so hard they bounce off into the ocean for the KO, and that's a damn shame.

    • @Graysett
      @Graysett 5 місяців тому +21

      Also it was barely advertised and being stuck on the epic games store was pretty awful. Those both go a long way too lol.
      Also, for some godforsaken reason even though the game had a pretty decent tutorial it was hidden in the "freeplay" mode and spread out across 3 locations on the map, with absolutely no indication that the tutorial existed until you decided to go to freeplay yourself.

    • @Gamerznation704
      @Gamerznation704 5 місяців тому +11

      I heavily agree with this, If you followed or did a bit more research into one of the people behind the development of the game that was pretty vocal (aka Keits) would know that this game wasn't necessarily a (wrestling adjacent) game.
      Alot of the design mechanics along with the thought process was from a fighting game standpoint, although it most certainly brought out a bit of that crowd.
      I think, alot of the problem is the art style but also in general this game came out at the wrong time. Gamers are finicky, and as what was mentioned earlier, fighting games have terrible retention. This game was honestly some of the best fun I'd had in a while, and don't get me wrong I can't stand the art style. However from the wrestling aspect alot of the moves they got were amazing and as someone who grew up on the wrestling games, fighting games this was perfect in that department (heavily disagree with the moves not feeling wrestling adjacent, this game arguably did that the best)
      I think the above comment honestly got down pretty much why this game did well, I think there should have been a bit more research into this actually failed.

      I wasn’t a pro by any means but no glaring balancing issues stuck out to me it just seemed like it had metas like any BR. I thought the fighting was a lot more interesting and I never expected a WWE type game out of it in the first place.

    I can't express how the art work and name, particularly with that poster, made me instantly pay no attention to the game. I saw an ad for it at one point and just assumed it was a mobile clone as that poster looked identical to any of a thousand other games with similar sounding names, I am honestly surprised that it only lasted 5 months as I am sure with a bit of work someone could go back years and find near identical promotional material over and over again

      Had this been set to release a few gaming generations ago, e.g. the PS2 c. 2003, this would have
      1. Been solely marketed towards children.
      2. Had gameplay_focused_ on the cartoonish wrestling idea.
      3. Would have stood out against a sea of visually realistic games at the time.
      4. Released as a physical game.
      That being said, I'd probably play it if that was the case, but as it is, it feels more like a tech demo from back then than the final product.
      I quite like the art style, but exaggerated anatomy will always be a hard sell for adult players. Sure, _Fortnite_ is stylised, but everyone still has realistic proportions.
      That and what this game badly needs is some defined characters and a storyline to follow or bounce off of. Context can make a huge difference gameplay-driven game like this.

      @@DoctorInk20 I feel like children wouldn't have liked this game because the combat was made for people with experience in fighting games.
      If you mash, which is what kids and newbies do, you'll get severely punished for it.
      Fortnite appeals to them because the combat is "I shoot you, bam, you're dead," but this game is "I punch you. I whiffed. I got combo'd and I lost... Awww, man, this sucks."

    As someone who played since launch and put 100s of hours into the game I can tell you release was a bit shit with bugs regarding hitboxes and stuff missing or hitting when it shouldn't but it did get better after the first season
    However there was so much to this game, the best way for me to describe it is as a 3D smash bros battle royale since there was a huge emphasis on movement and platforming, from doing two consecutive jumps to jump higher to dodging in air to get more distance, you can even block and jump and it will flip your character the other way making it easy to climb over a roof from a parking lot or something
    The only thing I think really hurt the game was the artstyle as even I was put off by it and only tried it because I like fighting games. With that being said there was so many customization options that making your character look cool wasn't an issue and they would add a lot of new weapons which would help with combos. Not to mention the games artstyle grew on me so much so that I think its perfect for the game overall its just the first impressions is what hurts it. People did think it was a mobile game or something including me until I got a notification from epic games on my pc.
    They added a freaking keybat which is just a reference to the keyblade and you can actually fly with it in game, don't even get me started on the combos where a lot of the time it was situational based off of your location
    If you are on a roof you can do roof combos where you knock the opponent off the building then catch them, wall combos which is self explanatory and of course floor combos, where if there is nothing else around they just get knocked over and you can elbow drop them or if you have something that can lift from the floor you can then extend the combo
    You even mentioned the lack of personality which is CRAZY
    The emotes went hard I believe one of the first emotes you were able to get was a crying emote where you literally make fun of your enemies and pretended cry while your character says "Boo-Hoo" (ITS IN THE TRAILER DAMMIT)
    I understand you can't play the game now so it's hard to actually review it but genuinely this game was gold, I think about it nearly every day and I'm actually working on remaking the games fighting mechanics because I liked it so much.

    For rumbleverse it sounds small or silly, but I think part of the reason it wasn't popular is that the characters are really ugly.
    Now I'm not saying a game needs every character to be sexualized to be successful, but having a few attractive poster characters really helps bring people in.

    One detail I wanted to throw in that I didn't see discussed in the video - the game was actually not very group-friendly.
    You could either go solo or duo (tag-team) with a friend, but 3 or more was not offered. They actually did have a "trios" mode, but it was only as a limited-time event, not a permanent configuration.
    BR games can be more solo-oriented, but I felt that a game as vibrant and wacky as this could've done more on that front.
    Needless to say, I did love playing Rumbleverse whenever I had the opportunity, and it was one of those few games that I felt would've lasted longer had it not been firmly in Fortnite's shadow and competing for player retention on FN's home platform.

    From what I remember, a few streamers that I watched really enjoyed the game because it dipped into the mechanics of fighting games. I won't elaborate on what they are because I'm terrible at them, but that might have been why Rumbleverse had such an explosive start and died with a whimper. It closely follows fighting game releases where there is an almost unimaginable successful launch, but as people hit their skill ceilings they put the game down. Only those that are willing to spend hours perfecting mechanics to become better stay.

    rumbleverse is still one of my favourite games (most likely top 3) because of how different it was, how well it was paced, how fun the multiplayer is, how fun it was to customise characters and how deep and interesting the combat was
    rumbleverse’s visual style is pretty goofy and different, but i can’t imagine it looking any other way graphically
    the visuals really fits the sillines the game is going for and it fits well with the gameplay and the wow moments despite of what you said stating that it lacked a good pressntation.

    you were kinna harsh, man. rumbleverse was a lot of fun nicknamed it my fortnite killer at the time 😅
    the aesthetic was similar to fort, but i’d argue more vibrant and the overall design gave urbz: sims in the city vibes
    the character customization was also god tier compared to some, so-called “AAA” games ;
    eye color, skin color, body type, gender, hair, eyebrows, shapes, colors…&more. the cosmetics while not always what most people would want you could pick and choose what to wear mix and match that with other items of clothing from different sets, no two characters ever looked the same unless you were starting out default or wore a fit to complete like the cat suit 👌🏻
    but ultimately it failed, because fighting games have a learning curve not many people want to nor have the time to put in to improve, lack of funds is a given i’m sure and being released around the height of the pandemic didn’t help ‘ither 😂
    hope to see it get picked up someday if not it was honor to have experienced 🙏🏻

    The big problem I had with it was that the game had rules you could read and memorize, and then those rules applied to moves, so it was an elaborate 'rock paper scissors' except it had like a dozen steps.
    And then not of that shit fucking mattered because the netcode was so damn broken half the time that you could win a clash, and then just get hit by the enemy attack (that you beat) anyway while they get away with it.

    It's sad to say but I was already so burned by other live-service games that unceremoniously died that I never even tried Rumbleverse, which only perpetuates the problem. But realistically, gamers can only play so many live service games at once, and rather than choosing games adjacent to their primary they will instead reach for the exact opposite type of game to break up the monotony.

    Rumbleverse was something special for me. It really felt like a Fighting-game BR. The biggest issues was lack of modes and troubles to generate revenue (I literally bought one outfit, feel in love with it and never bought anything else). One thing I will say is that this game had the BEST feeling movement of a 3D game that I have played in that last 5years! If it wasn't for the ""need"" to generate revenue and the game could just be a game without being shut down. I would still be playing today. This kind of game-feel coulda lent itself to numerous game modes, not just BR.

    I think that the biggest problem with a battle royale is that it is a battle royale game, the genre has become very saturated and can hardly entertain the public anymore, the saddest thing is that there are games with cool ideas like SpellBreak which had very good gameplay but It left a lot to be desired because it was a battle royale game.

    I feel like something that was not mentioned is that, for any "competitive" game, losing control of your character is a terrible gameplay experience and can quickly lead to cheesy moments. And that was a big issue in Rumbleverse.
    All of these other wrestling type games are for fun/casual so it's fine. But for Rumbleverse, you could really feel cheated out by being stunlocked into grapples and throws.
    This led to multiple issues, people running away to play for the safe zone rather than fighting each other, (which is true on any BR, but in a brawler focused on over the top melee combat, this is basically nullifying what makes the game unique); CC attacks being the preferred power ups, and the superstar finisher leading to frustrating experiences since you could be grabbed twice in a row by different players, resulting in many seconds of CC followed by elimination.
    I wouldn't overlook that aspect because part of the fun in BRs is outplaying the other player with your choices, but if you can make choices because you are CCd, that quickly leads to resentment. Especially if you need to cater to a casual audience (the visual style indicates as much) and a hardcore audience (the mechanics indicate as much) at the same time.

    I loved this game and played it all throughout its life cycle. They had a 1 year contract with Epic Games in order to make this game profitable, wasting 6 months of it with that delay that you mentioned in the video. They only had 6 months to rake in the profit and ultimately failed. I wished it would've lasted longer, they had such promising concepts for Season 3 and beyond but it was never meant to be. Maybe someday people will give another game that's like this a chance to shine.

  • @Delfar
    @Delfar 5 місяців тому +1

    I don't think you put in the table the main problems of the game:
    1- The skill gap, there were testers in the beta that were playing for A YEAR previous the launch of the game and when the game started there were real VETERANS that were really impossible to beat for someone new to the game as the gameplay was so deep. And it helps that players try the game for some matches and leave as there was no a proper matchmaking, everyone available in that moment joined the match.
    2 - The grind in the battle pass was excessive, I am a wrestling fan and I usually play BR like Fortnite, Apex, Naraka, Bloodhunt... Rumbleverse had the worse BP I ever meet and I checked most of them, majority of the cosmetics feel that just something to fill the void, the missions were or pretty complex or pretty large to complete and the time you needed to dedicate to the game was excessive and it was pretty hard as the player base was shrinking and shrinking as new player were scared away by veterans dominating the gameplay, sometimes it too so long to join a match that you finally quit after two or three as just spent hours to play a few minutes.

    • @nerdSlayerstudioss
      @nerdSlayerstudioss  5 місяців тому +1

      In your single-opinion, luckily my analysis is based on more than just one person. People playing the game for a year before launch...source? Because the beta was not even introduced then. And the concept you described, ALL BRs suffer from, including the most popular WITH ranked systems. I thought you would know that since you mentioned playing the others.
      And second, the battle pass is a SMALL part of my argument, which was poor monetization. So actually, you didn't full understand my point and then listed a reason I literally cover.

    • @Delfar
      @Delfar 5 місяців тому +2

      @@nerdSlayerstudioss the battle pass was part of the poor engagement, at least for me and me friends that quit the game. I am sorry, I talk from experience, I was looking forward the game before launch and we noticed the game was pretty hard to master but there was people so good DAY ONE, we searched in internet and we found that some people were talking about they were veterans from beta. I will check back because was something that was pretty viral at the moment of launch.
      Matchmaking improved when they added bots, but most competitive players didn't liked it.

    • @Delfar
      @Delfar 5 місяців тому +2

      @@nerdSlayerstudioss I am sorry if you feel I didn't agree your points and I didn't like the video, I did. I really missed those points because those were the ones that made our full community (from a Fortnite youtuber discord) to quit the game although most of us love wrestling and we were used to BR problems and grinding.
      The problem with the BP was not as much the price as the ENGAGEMENT, as it was hard to feel rewarding and progressing. You are right about the monetization but I think that the store was much worse that the BP in that aspect. Most of the BR keep the players returning due to BP and I think RV failed in it.
      I have being searching and I found there was some open beta weekends and some beta rewards but it was impossible to find the dates related to beta, when I looked in internet how it was possible that in the launch day there were as much people that dominated the game all I found was people ranting about the veterans from beta that have being playing for a year, I though it was real and not an exaggerated statement. And you are right skill gap is usually a main problem in BR but feel pretty weird to have a so large skill gap in a game just at launch. Or at least is how we felt it, I am used because as I am older I not very skilful in game but when other players start to rant about it I noticed it was just not my impression. I tried to introduce new players as I love the theme but the quit after two or three matches and that was one of the problems (other were the theme, the aesthetic, the gameplay... depending of the player).
      You say there is not beta but I found videos of open beta weekends at least in July and August before launch, there are others asking for people in february but I found no prove of it and there are people asking for items for beta in different platforms, as I far as I know there was a beta... I believe you if it wasn't as long I have read in the past but as far I can look in internet there was one.
      Thank you for the video I really love to see this kind of analysis and bring a lot of memories about those closed games.

    Which is kinda right, it wasn’t talked about mostly and died quicker than most games take to
