I get a chill down my spine and I've never lived in a country from the Communist bloc. It's how the music swells and slowly pans up to reveal Napoleon clothed that the dread and the spine tingling horror really comes in. Then to ease the pressure, the camera cuts away to show us that no one is watching this film, and then it returns us to viewing the film in a different manner than we had a few seconds prior. Heavy-handed, but intriguing editing.
This is actually a pretty good song and sounds exactly like Soviet music. Its kinda catchy. FOUR LEGS GOOD, TWO LEGS BETTER!! Napoleon kinda looks like a mix between Stalin and Kim Jong Un.
I saw this as a kid and I was creeped out by the song and seeing Old Major's Skull. but when I first saw Napoleon standing in clothes, I was so terrified half to death I almost screamed like fucking hell.
I didn’t see this until college and it still creeped me the fuck out even though I knew it was coming. I grew up on stuff like Winnie the Pooh and various Disney films so I’m used to the idea of fictional animals standing on their back legs but by God this film put the fear in me.
In case you're still interested, it is based on some Russian tune called 'Soldaty V Pohod' which I believe translates to "Off we go." If you do a search on UA-cam of it there are some videos of the Red Army singing it.
This scene always gives me a sense of dread because it always reflects on how realistic it can me. I still wonder what happened to the farm once the Animals left. Perhaps its better left unsaid.
he kinda reminds of Scar from the movie the lion king. Napoleon = Scar Snowball = Mufasa/Simba Napoleons dogs = the hyenas the animals = the lionesses. Annimal farm= proud lands
And this is easily the most delicious segment of this movie adaption. Four legs good, two legs better (panning out with Captain Picard's echo in the background, lol)
This movie was not as bad as everyone said. Good adaption of the original story, even if the end may have been a bit weak. I seriously think they added some nice new ideas (like this song for example, which was at least also translated to German and Spanish).
The book was awesome. Movie helped me better understand what happened in the book, although it's not like I needed a picture, the book described it well itself. :)
This part of the movie was and is terrifying to me. The whole idea behind "Animalism" was based off the exact opposite of what is going on in this scene. I do know that George Orwell believed that socialism had a chance in the hands of the right people or in the actual socieity itself. I myself find that Orwell did an amazing job of expressing that in the book and the scene came out frighteningly well in the movie.
I read the book so I knew it was coming but the execution is absolutely perfect the way it’s timed with the climax of the song. Still gave me a good scare.
As someone from the communist block, I can tell you this song sends shivers down my spine every time I see it, and the ending of the film brings tears to my eyes. I am not sure about Russia, but Slovakia did really end just like this film. We have managed to break free... and we have new government.
FUN FACT: A duck was used due to a duck's quack having no substance to it, just empty noise which was meant to represent their empty calls of praise to Napoleon. Also you gotta love how choreographed this is for a "spontaneous" demonstration. the film should've just ended here, there's no hope at all left after watching this scene.
True what's brillant when old major was shown on the podium he was wise and graceful napoleon on the other hand is monstrous, eviel and the image of tyrants
I just remembered something funny! Patrick Stewart does Napoleon's voice. Napoleon is an allegory of Joseph Stalin. In the series "Fall of Eagles," he played Vladimir Lenin.
I loved this movie, thought it was a great adaptation. Yes, some liberties were taken but it accomplishes the goal of the book (showing the dark side of the soviets), effectively reflects the fall of communism (and the corruption thereof) and has epic music (like this (this was the best part of the movie))
I was only a preteen when I saw this film, and this scene filled me with shock, horror, and disgust. I had no idea that it was all about Communism until I've read it in an encyclopedia about a year later or so.
Napoleon talking about the importance of weapons production reminds me of the importance the West places on sending weapons to Ukraine to "end the war". Because nothing can bring more peace than sending more weapons.
I'm afraid I disagree. While he was giving a rough history of the Soviet Union, I believe that his purpose was to show how revolutions can be hijacked, and that the Communists were just as bad as the Tsars, rather than a history book with added animals. It just messes up the whole narrative, for me.
Sorry for being 10 years late but that is what it’s ment to represent in the original book as it was published while Stalin was leader of the Soviet Union
@17Ararat , I totally agree with you.I haven't read the book but only from watching the movie I got the same feeling.Orwell is not doing a promotion of his own political thesis, neither does he photograph a specific regime.I think it is much more than this.Mostly it is about the mechanism and tactics used by leaders throughout history in order to use people's thirst for justice for their own purposes.Dictatorship-especially now-has many faces
