That is one of my favorite dialog exchanges in the entire Rocky/Creed cinematic universe.

When Creed opened, Ryan Coogler did an interview with Deadline where he talked about how he grew up on the Rocky movies, watching them with his dad. His dad got sick at one point, and he was really struck by seeing this guy who he thought of as a large and imposing figure cut down by disease. The great ending to this story is that Coogler's father recovered from his illness and got to see the Rocky movie his son made.
Even if it was more coincidence than intentional, I also love the way Coogler and Stallone's relationship naturally had to mimic Adonis and Rocky's. Stallone believed Rocky Balboa had been the end of the series, and then this younger guy comes to him with this project and has to convince him to come out of retirement to play the mentor figure both in the movie and outside of it. On the more intentional side, I think it's brilliant that the movie finds a way to make Adonis's arc the inverse of Rocky's. Rocky thinks of himself as a nobody and just wants to feel like he's made a name for himself, that he's a somebody. Normally it might be challenging to frame Adonis as having the same problem, given the resources he has at his fingertips thanks to Maryanne, but by making him a child that Apollo had out of wedlock, they find a way to give Adonis a rough-and-tumble background and also create an obvious reason why he would feel he didn't *earn* those things, and thus, like Rocky, he feels undeserving and has to prove himself.
Sage had already passed by the time the movie was made, and I think using that picture of Sage when talking about Robert -- and this might have even been confirmed -- added a layer to Stallone's performance in that scene, being sad that Robert is no longer nearby.
Stallone has said that Robert Chartoff, the producer who is memorialized in the credits here, was the one of the Chartoff-Winkler team he trusted and loved. He has claimed in recent interviews that Winkler is determined to milk the Rocky IP for everything he can, which is to some degree supported by the fact that they're working on a Drago movie without Stallone's involvement.

It always makes me laugh that some reactors I’ve seen have referred to some of the opponents (both in “Rocky Balboa” and the “Creed” movies), as not looking like they can fight or be good enough to take on either Rocky or Adonis… and yet those opponents are the ones who are ACTUAL real-life boxers.

@@thedefinitionisthis And to be fair, even Carl Weathers was a boxer as a teenager, along with a bunch of other sports, mainly football. In fact, I can't actually think of an opponent in the series that didn't have at least some martial arts background, even if it was as a kid/teenager. Carl Weather boxed, Mr. T supposedly took martial arts as a kid, Dolph Lundgren is a karate black belt, Tommy Morrison was the WBO heavyweight champion, Antonio Tarver was the WBC, WBA, IBF and Ring light heavyweight champion, Andre Ward was a unified champion in two weight classes and the pound for pound #1 fighter in the world at one point, Gabriel Rosado fought for the middleweight title twice, Tony Bellew was the WBC cruiserweight champion, apparently Florian Munteanu boxed in Germany, and Jose Benevidez fought for the welterweight title. I think Jonathan Majors might be the only one with no formal fight training.

  • @thedefinitionisthis
    @thedefinitionisthis Рік тому +20

Yeah, so Stallone didn't have any creative input other than tweaking his dialogue in the script to be more authentically "Rocky". Ryan Coogler was the one who came up with the idea of Apollo having an illegitimate son who turns to Rocky to help build a pro-boxing career. He had the idea, as he grew up watching the "Rocky" movies with his father, who would end up facing his own health issues. Coogler had to pitch and sell the idea to Stallone, who already was content with the success of "Rocky Balboa". He would eventually get an Oscar nomination for best-supporting actor, and would win the Golden Globe for best supporting-actor for reprising the role of Rocky. Stallone would end up having more hands-on control in "Creed II", as he has a story and screenwriting credit, before bowing out completely for "Creed III" due to his issues with producer Irwin Winkler. Stallone has said that he is open to returning to the franchise for potential "Creed" sequels, but only under the condition that Winkler isn't involved.

Michael B. Jordan's 2nd film with Ryan Coogler after Fruitvale Station (2013).
Coogler would ultimately get the job to direct Marvel Studios' Black Panther after the success of Creed.
MBJ gives a great performance with a good supporting cast around him.
The script, camera work, choreography for the fights, etc; does not dissapoint.
Stallone as Rocky just endures more and more.
He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in this movie.
It was the 2nd time he'd ever been nominated as the character and he won the Golden Globe for it.
The backbone that is The Rocky Saga must be acknowledged as the way of understanding how we get here from way back when.
Creed was the spinoff that nobody saw coming and afterwards we couldn't wait for more.
RIP to Tony Burton (Duke Evers) and Sylvia Meals (the original Mary Anne Creed/Johnson).

He was unsure about doing it but after Stallone said they all had to take one real shot in the past movies so he agreed to do it. The boxer doing the punching said he’s only going like 40% of his real punch, they do it and when playing it back the boxers glove blocked the camera and they had to do it again. Max's is regarded as one of the top spots HOWEVER it's located in a deeply crime-affected black section of the city, so it's little known to non-black folks
One of my favorite things about this movie is how it showcases Philly and its grit the same as Rocky did. However, because it does so with a black lead, it shows Philly throw a more black lens: Max's, the soundtrack, dirt bike kiddies, the music culture, and "jawn" (which - although a Philly-wide term - originated from our regional ebonics)
Not to spoil too much, but I was a little disappointed with how Creed 2 took focus away from Philly since these movies mean so god damn much to us, but it was still a solid movie. Doesn't stand up to this unfortunately (it's a lot more heavy-handed with the callbacks) but I still expect Creed 3 to be solid

Damn, if the only experience youse have had with cheesesteaks are those tourist traps Pat's & Geno's then ... damn that's sad.
Next time you're in Philly, hit up South Street and goto Ishkabibbles - or even better find a street cart in Center City and get yourself a real one!
And yeah... jawn... just go with it. Person, place, thing. Name, object, subject. Whatever. If it exists, it's a jawn. If it doesn't exist, it's a jawn.

    Verse 1
There’s more to even bring to the boxing ring than them gloves,
One hit and one point, you never wanna end up doing the runs,
The only thing you have to do is use your hands, heart and even guns,
The whole mind keeps it steady when ever you have something coming up,
I’m sure, that I can beat these titles
Making it more difficult than any rival
I’m sure, that I can beat these titles
    Verse 2
Where does the word comes when ever you hit or miss the mark,
I see the whole runnings man it’s a whole different when in the park,
I see the elephant in the room. Man it’s gonna be all torn right apart,
See the only thing that hits with a lot more isn’t whenever you have art,

There's an old-school style of story telling in Creed that just doesn't exist in most movies today. Everything today tries to be "subversive" or whatever. This is just pure quality. Really really good stuff.

Stallone sold the Franchise, he has basically has been cut out anything other than playing Rocky anymore by the owner. And as of late, he's been cut out of even that in Creed III. Stallone has posted some beef against those owners on his social and in media.

Having filmed with with the cast and crew, I can tell you that it was an amazing experience and to see it all come to life was even greater. Oh and fun fact, all of the boxers in the movie really are professional, and another fun fact, Adonis first official fight with Leo “The Lion” (real name Gabriel) was all one shot. It took about 20 takes to get it right. But the director Ryan Coogler( who also directed Black panther) wanted a one shot fight scene…oh and the cheesesteak place that they were eating at was Max’s in North Philly. The one you guys were talking about eating was Genos and Pats in South Philly. “Jawn” takes the place of a noun, btw😂
Another fun fact: Because Ryan Coogler was busy with Black Panther and the marvel universe stuff, he allowed one of his good friend Steve Caple direct Creed 2. Steve did such a great job, that he’s now Directing the new Transformers movie coming out soon.
