I haven’t tried that Magic Eraser project but you can bet I will. I use Otis 085 gun wipes that also work very well. Dennis, you remember my all chrome (exterior) Mitchell 498 that I built from parts. That chrome work was done in a custom motorcycle shop and turned out extremely well! You;re right though as it is definitely not cheap. My chrome 498 is all but priceless though. Pflueger reels parts are all but impossible to find. Parts reels as usually the best bet. I buy a lot of parts reels especially for all my big saltwater vintage Mitchell spinning reels. Axle shafts for those reels in particular are now impossible to find except through buying parts reels. For instance a much cheaper Mitchell 302N or 386 uses the same axle shafts for those as the more expensive high speed Mitchells like the 396, 486, 496, and 498. Building a trusted group of folks who sell used and NOS reel parts is always a good idea. Great video Dennis! - Chris. PS. Thanks for your kind note about the Fin Nor reel part we made with a 3D printer. I still can’t believe how great that worked!
Very good video, I like the tips and tricks they are very useful! I’m not a big fan of using loctite either unless absolutely necessary. Do you have a favorite vintage spinning reel for bass and catfish? I’ve got a royal maroon (2052) I love to fish with and just picked up a daiwa 4300a for $5 and was amazed (after cleaning and re greasing) how these vintage reels that have only 1 ball bearing are smoother than a lot of these newer reels. I always look forward to watching your videos everyday after a hectic day at work it’s a good way to wind down and relax.
Hi dennis, I have a 1989 shimano titanos fightin' es 500. A small ultralight spinning reel with a fiightin' drag. My question is i would like to know, is there a way for this reel, its anti reverse dog can be set in minimal freeback-play? It doesnt have a quickfire trigger like some same base kind, but the freeback-play seems it has and its not suppose to be. Too much gap in one rotation. A little frustration occurs when i'm using it causing by line tangled around the rotor when the rotor hit backwards. Hope you can figure me out. Thanks.
Hi Dennis, I have a question. I have had several brand-new Okuma Coldwaters and Convectors that exhibit the same annoying characteristic. The vexing problem is when you flip the spool release lever the spool doesn't release. Frustration follows and after some manipulation the reel suddenly and unpredictably releases. These reels have greased drag washers. I notice you routinely grease drag washers. Could the greased washers be causing the mechanism to stick? Could the cause be something else? I will say it seems the problem lessens with use. Thank you.
No. The free spool release is anf unction of the release jack or trip mechanism, spring and yoke. It does not involve the drag or main gear. When sticking occurs, it is usually that the Jack or trip mechanism does not push out the yoke easily. Sometimes the cause is dirt and debris clogging the mechanism. Other times is could be too much weight on the line. Heavy weights can lock in the spool and make pushing the yoke to free spool difficult. Try holding your thumb on the spool and pull back on it slightly before using the free spool lever. See if that makes it easier - Dennis
Hi Dennis@@2ndChanceTackle, After I hit "send" I thought about it a little more and what I should have wrote is: When I loosen the star drag, and tug, the reel does not respond, then I loosen it more, tug, and the reel still doesn't respond....then I say hmmm....I muscle up on my tug, and the reel responds by spinning wildly, seemingly under no restraint by drag until I stop it with my hand. Any thoughts?
You may have to try an online parts retailer, but parts for the Quantum spinning reels are hard to get. Most distributors only support the bait casting reels. Check eBay - Yuma need to find a donor reel to get the handle - Dennis
