🔥I'm working on a watch PCB with Nixie Tubes. It has to be small, work with high voltage of around 150V, have a RTC and the Arduino and be able to drive 4 Nixie Tube at once. These are some tests I've made for that project.

Very interesting. I built a 6 tube nixie clock (H:M:S) back in the early 1970's. It was a kit from Henry's Radio, a popular electronics supplier of the time. It was mains powered and used the mains frequency to generate the clock cycles, divided down by 7490's and decoded by 74141's. Things have certainly changed since then!

Challenging project! I made a desktop clock using filaments from regular LED lamps. My digits are about 10cm high. The high voltage generator is based on the good old NE555.

I love those d**m tubes :D I'm almost finished with a IV16 clock, I will also make one with IV11 and IV7 vfd. Then I'll move on to real nixies :) I just really love the warm glow on them, plus a clock pcb looks amazing, packed with all those ICs :D

You can use 74141 TTL (there is also SMD version or K133ID1 analog) logic driver to control all 4 tubes as dynamic indicator. You can also use SMD DS1307 to minimize the space and four SMD MMBT92 (PNP) or MMBT42(NPN) transistors. Along with MCU and HV step up voltage converter, that is all you need to make your watch simple and small. :D
Now make a number guessing game in those nixie tube, I would love to see the circuit and no of components required 😂😂

A way to not use so many transistors could be that all the segments except the anode of the nixie tubes that you are going to use are connected to the same transistors, but that the anode of each of the tubes is turning off and on one by one. at the same time (the first nixie turns on and the others turn off, the second turns on and all the others turn off and so on) in a way so fast that it is imperceptible to the human eye so that it seems that they are all on at the same time?
Checked the HV5812WG datasheet and it's only rated for up to 90V operation and is meant to drive VFD's not nixies, so you'll have to find something else.
Also the HC-06 BT module you showed in the video has it's own programmable microcontroller so you can try programming it, maybe that will save some power.
You can also multiplex nixie tubes and use fewer driver IC's. For something like this if you choose to drive the nixies with transistors then you no longer need the driver IC (which is just a high voltage shift register anyways) and for 4 nixies you would only need 10+4 pins.
Edit: and only 10+8 transistors.
A better choice for the driver would be the HV513 which is a 250V rated 8-bit shift register with short circuit detection and other cool features in a 24-pin SMD pachage.
And since the output is push-pull two of these can be used to drive up to 6 nixie tubes (10+6).
I know this is a old vid but for nixie tubes not lighting properly you need to apply higher voltage to "burn" off the oxides on the digit once its fully lit it should be sufficient to function properly again
Man everytime i come and look at your views count it just troubles me because you've been making such high quality videos for so long. I think maybe you need to segment your videos into 10 minute chunks. UA-cam recommends those videos a lot more frequently than they do 20 minute videos.

I have an idea that may allow you to save some space on the pcb
The idea is to control the 4 nixie tubes with one driver only
This will save a space of one driver but you will need 4 more BJT transistors
I once did it with one shift register and 4 seven segments and it worked
I don't know if it will work with nixie tubes but it will be a good experience to get

You can make a 3 digit wristwatch use the decimal point pin to know it it is a 1 or a 0 for the hours.

why not use a low power STM32L0? Arduino compatible, and I think the STM32 has built in RTC as well. Eliminating one more IC saves board space and reduces power draw slightly

I like nixie tube as much as the next guy, but is a watch really a practical application rather than a desk clock. Apart form looking....Well not the slickest thing I'm be blunt a hideous Frankenstein machine, isn't it a bit non-sensical having fragile vacuumed chunky glass tubes that might implode on my rest with a 200v supply that might zap the shit out of me.
Side note If you are still planning on making it a watch you might as well make a hand shocker out of the supply to prank your friends with.

Yes, there are a few mm between the lines so below 500V there should be no arcs.

Hi! There's a lot of videos about Nixie tube on youtube.. can you do a video about VFD tube?
Can't we use multiplexing in these nixi tube to control 4 nixie tube with just 14pins of arduino. We can use 10 npn bjts connected to all the numbers of all the 4 Nixie tube and use 4 pnp bjts for the anode of each of the 4 Nixie tube. I don't know if the tubes can switch fast or not so if you try that, then do tell me.
I should try that. But from what I know they need high voltage DC and multiplexing is like applying fast switched signal and might not work ..
@@ELECTRONOOBS I am also doubtful if the Nixie tubes can switch that fast. But it will be worth trying. If this works, then try to alter the switching frequency to see where will the sweetspot lie if at all the multiplexing works. Anyways, thanks for the great and knowledgeable video!!
@@ELECTRONOOBS You can switch and multiplex the HV DC anodes. Use PNP high voltage transistors, instead of the NPN ones, which are used for the cathode ground. I've also seen ti been done using opto-isolators, to switch and mutiplex the HV anode side.
Just about all nixie tube watches I've seen do use multiplexing, and many nixie clocks do as well.

2 not so question.- I think that you could have got away with 3 nixie tubes, using 12 or 24 hour clock by using modulo 12. bc 12-hour clock are already 24-hour clock with modulo 12.

Use low resistance wires, add amplifiers, increase voltage. All this should help for long range

It's one of my favorite Spanish language things. 'U' is pronounced as in 'pool', 'V' sounds like 'vay', and 'W' sounds like 'doblay vay'. Little bits of latin languages will give insights like this into English.

Bubble displays are a lot cooler for watches. Strapping a high voltage device to your skin is a very dangerous idea.
