    What I love is how in Japan, they build vending machines so well and take care of them so well, that you can find old 70's machines with Nixie Tubes as the timer display while it heats up your food. Really retro looking.

    I worked in the Nuclear I&C regimen, and to replace almost any system from the 70's or 80's is extremely difficult...any replacement system has to exactly match "Form, Fit, and Function"; something newer could be created that is more sensitive, but that would be an issue (how will the "downstream" components react?) So I had to replace nixie tubes in units...yes, there was an "upgraded" newer retrofit, but it would have cost millions to be able to use the retrofit. As a result, I had to find the NLA exact same tubes. Newer ones were unacceptable, as were the Soviet versions. Thank goodness I found a warehouse that was being liquidated and scored 38 brand new exact matches. Lord knows what will happen when those run out...

    I have a $300 dollar Davc&Co Nixie tube watch my girlfriend bought me for my birthday and I love it. I'm about to start ordering more tube clock products, I'm already in love with tubes through audio equipment, which is a whole different story about the warmth of tubes. It's kind of in the same vein as incandescent bulbs vs LED's. The warm glow of that old technology is more pleasing, more primal, closer to just looking at a fire.

      @akawilly 8 років тому +3

      Hey Techmoan, you can remove that distracting flicker by changing around your iso, aperture, and shutter speed.
      Slow the shutter and raise the aperture. Preferably keep the iso as low as you can to stay away from grain.

    • @CookingWithCows
      @CookingWithCows 7 років тому +2

      the only important thing here is the shutter speed, or recorded frames per second. If it's recording at 30 frames per second, and the electric operates at 60 hertz, then every second frame, the camera will record it while the power is "off", resulting in flicker.
      what iso probably does is, with higher sensibility, it swamps out the picture so that the flicker is not so noticable, but that doesn't fix the problem.

    • @akawilly
      @akawilly 7 років тому

      don't you know the three affect each other? If you change the shutter you must compensate with ISO and/or aperture. The camera will do it automatically if it's any good though.

      +MaceGaming53 I have a pile of the necessary B-4998 tubes. The problem is that these end-view tubes will result in a watch that is over an inch thick. So the case design is, shall we say, tricky.

    Great video and watch. When I started out in my career in Electronics nixie tube, CRT's, and LED displays were the only methods of displaying information. Even today I still love nixie tubes for many applications. Thanks Techmoan!

    I can't recall Nixie Tubes and I'm age 54. I do remember seeing them in old movies and had a LCD calculator watch in the early 80s. My favorite clock radio had physical flipping numerals that were lit up by a blacklight, but the flipping motor eventually wore out. I'd like to see a video on these.

    When I was a kid in the early 80s, it really was a digital watch revolution. I had a watch that played "Dixieland" as an alarm, a watch that had an FM radio, and a watch that played a really simple Space Invaders. No nixie's though, they were all LCDs of course. Dude those were the days =) Today I don't even have a wristwatch, I use a "digital pocket watch" (my phone).
