  • Coming up, Lou Gramm was riding high in the 70s as his band Black Sheep had just opened for one of the biggest bands in the world. And after years of hard work and ultra tenacity they were finally going to break out. But then his world came crashing down when a car wreck destroyed all of their instruments and equipment, and their label wouldn’t front them the money to get new stuff. So they had to cancel their remaining dates. Lou Gramm was horrified, he thought his career was over but then he got a phone call from Mick Jones that changed his life. Asking him to be the lead singer of his new band Foreigner… Up next, how their composition, Feels Like the First Time became the opening shot for Foreigner, on its way to becoming a classic rock standard…giving them the chance to become one of the biggest bands ever. And many think it’s a sex song but it actually means something totally different… Next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show we breakdown songs, albums or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long term success. Sometimes you have go through hell before you can get to heaven. That’s what happened to singer Lou Gramm who ruled the late 70s and 80s as the lead singer of the stadium rock giants Foreigner. Lou was ready to go big time with his band black sheep when tragedy struck and ripped their rock and roll dreams away from them. When he thought it was all over he got a call that would change his life. IT was Mick Jones wanting him to come auditon for his new band Foreigner… Over 50 singers Auditioned for the singer position, but Lou declined! Up next in an exclusive interview Lou tells the miraculous story as well as the Foreigner’s break through hit, the classic rock standard Feels Like the First time. Which most people have thought was about sex, but in reality CO-writer Mick Jones told me that the song was written about a bit of a change in his life, Mick told me he was coming out of a previous marriage with somebody he'd met in France.
He had just gone back to England and then finally came over to America while he was in the band Spooky Tooth. And for mick it was a challenge of going for a new start in his life and it really came out of the blue…To Mick, the song was signifying a new start. He's met somebody, he got re-married and moved with her to America, and that was the song that described that experience.” It was also a new start in a new band where he was in control of his destiny, including calling the shots, he was now the primary member and this song was the synthesis of the fresh start… and what a start it was. This song was one of four song the were on a demo tape that got Foreigner their record deal. Let’s get into the interview.

Hey, Music 🎶 Junkies, here’s the TOP 3 greatest rock voices in the late 70s 80s:
    1. Steve Perrry
    2. Lou Gramm
    3. Freddie Mercury
***so thankful Steve and Lou are still with us and Lou continues to perform and rock our 🌍!
I believe Steve Perry WASTED the finest years of his life dealing with grief, anger, hip replacement surgery and general SECLUSION.
Lou overcame a brain tumor and returned to the Rock stage and we love Lou for it!
We can’t hear you backing vocals with “The Effect” today Steve Perry.

I voted for Foreigner every day. Those who did vote know you could choose several bands to vote for each day... me? I submitted only ONE vote each day ONLY for Foreigner.
    Finally!
"Juke Box Hero" is not my favorite song (regardless of bands), but when I hear that song play, it does only one thing for me... it pumps me up and gets me rockin'. How it starts slow and then works up to a crescendo, wow, power right there!
Foreigner was HUGe when I was in junior high school, and half the students wore the "Foreigner 4" t-shirt at least once a week. I can still recall looking around the classroom and seeing half the kids in their black t-shirts with the white circle around the number "4""... it was a good era that I wish I could return to and never leave.

Foreigner with Lou Gramm was unstoppable. Lou could belt it out and do it again and again on stage. He was the one to sing all of their songs. I can’t imagine losing everything to put on a show like that. I’m so glad he got another chance.

    • @RUHDD4HVN

It's because it's controlled and used for and by satan if you dare to believe it and understand the implications. He has used not just the rock and roll genre but others as well (not being religious just studied). In Led Zeppelins Page and Plants song "Walking Into Clarksdale" they call him (satan) "the king of commerce". They mention him as the one who met with now famed blues guitarist Robert Johnson at "The Crossroads" in Clarksdale Mississippi of legend long ago. Can you see why the labels used the artist in a slave sort of way and took advantage with promises of fame and fortune for a life of sex, drugs and you know the rest. Also of quick note look (even now) at the use of satanic imagery and antichrist glorification that the music industry tends to heap upon all who will partake and agree with that said life. Blessings.

It's absolutely criminal that Foreigner wasn't in the HoF much earlier but, that's the HoF. It's great but it's a popularity contest joke where eligibility and a band's achievements really mean nothing. There has to be a strong outcry for a snubbed band to ever get in.
Foreigner was the soundtrack of my youth and now my middle age going into old age. I bought every album and still listen today--the music just never gets old. It perseveres against what passes for music today.
Thank you. Professor. for documenting the tales of these amazing bands so they're not lost to history.

Late 70s/early 80s. I'm driving a mustard yellow 1976 Dodge Aspen 225 slant 6 with 6x9 Pyle speakers, a Sony head unit, and a Pioneer amp. Foreigner and Boston are in heavy rotation on my mix cassettes. Those Pyles took a beating, and you could fry an egg on the Pioneer amp when I had Foreigner cranked up to 11! This music, especially the voices of Lou Gramm and Brad Delp kept me sane during those years. We certainly grew up with some great music! Thanks for these great interviews, Professor.

How many of us, out there, wanted to be a "Juke Box Hero"? So many of us, including me, first saw on the TV some band (Chuck Berry) and wanted to become like them.
"First Time" was a great hit, but "Juke Box Hero", to many, was what brought us all to love them. WE too "didn't have a ticket, to (the) sold out show".
Now discovering that Lou Gramm really was telling a true story about himself, and then one day opening for the band that started his journey is extra special.
Adam, what always impresses me is that folks like Lou enjoy talking with you. You get them to share stories like Lou's, and they love doing it, over and over. You are, after all, THE Professor of Rock. Great video. ;-)

I remember as a kid my dad pulling out the album tha had a juke box on it then dropped the needle and turn up the volume. The stereo had red green and blue lights that would flash along with the music. Great times. My dad passed away in 2020 but i can put on Foreigner and instantly travel back in time and it is wonderful. Great video, i wish they still made good music like this.

It was released during my junior year of high school and I was blown away when my friend plopped the cassette into the tape deck of his VW Beetle when we were cruising around town one night. Several songs into it I just had to know the name of the band because I loved what I was hearing. To this day they're still my all-time favorite band and their self-titled debut album is my favorite album from any artist. During my senior year my girlfriend (now wife of forty years) and I literally wore the grooves out of it since it was often on a constant loop on my dad's Girard turntable most Friday and Saturday nights. Around twenty years ago I was able to get Mick and Lou's autographs on the debut and 4 album covers when I was backstage. They're framed and hanging in my garage along with a number of Foreigner and other artists concert posters.

PoR, you should have put this out a few days ago, on Lou Gramm's birthday. What a great lead singer. The 70s were loaded with some of the best vocalists ever, and Gramm was certainly one of them. Foreigner hit the airwaves when I was in the upper grades of grade school, and if you didn't grow up then, you really can't understand how big they were. I read an article by some hack who said they were the least deserving of this past year's nominees for the Rock Hall. I had them tied with Ozzy for #1, with Peter Frampton a close second (all three are finally in, and it's long overdue!). I know Lou Gramm had health issues, issues that lead to a thyroid problem (something I am all too familiar with) but he got through it and we're glad he did! Great vid on a song that helped launch them into the rock scene.

One of my all-time favorite bands, and one of the few Rock bands that I’ve actually seen in concert, and a GREAT memory for me. I saw Foreigner in Hartford, CT, in 1985, during their Agent Provocateur Tour. Unfortunately, Joe Walsh opened for them and gave an absolutely horrible performance. Once he was off the stage, though, I was ecstatic, and Foreigner was FANTASTIC!! I’d love to relive THAT memory!!❤❤❤

Foreigner was my favorite band from the 80’s. They said screw the music trends that were happening and came in and rocked the house. It was one of the few real bands that registered with me and most of my friends. It was hot and fresh music and we fell in love. There was finally something besides “new wave” and “grunge” on the air.

Great video! Great Story! I Remember foreigner from junior high, and everyone who liked Foreigner seemed like they were a stoner. I remember in jr. high kids wearing their Foreigner T-shirt to school the day after the concert, and those kids were all stoners. That's a memory of Foreigner from the 70's. But my favorite Foreigner memory is one that was told to me by a friend, about a friend or acquaintance of his that sang backup vocals for Foreigner, and this young man saved his money from singing with Foreigner and became a Mormon missionary. I was told story that nearly 40 years ago. My friend moved away, he's an ER doctor in Montana and it's probably been 15 years since we've touched bases, but I've always wanted to corroborate that story with him about his friend, I need to do that! I recall there were lots of drugs involved on the tour. But whenever I hear Foreigner, I think about them paying the way for some young man to pay for him becoming a missionary. You know that song, Don't mess with a missionary man! 😂
Great video, thanks Professor! So happy for Lou! He's right up there with Steve Perry imosho!

That song became part of the soundtrack to my high school years. That song still takes me back and reminds me of a few girls from high school now 40 years later. In my head I always wanted to sing that song to one of those girls but never got the nerve or the opportunity. Such a great time for music an dmeaning. Congrats again on hitting 1 million Professor.

My two years younger cousin and I used to hang out in his room and listen to Foreigner albums when we were barely teens. I just turned 60 this year, and he and have talked multiple times over the years how we used to listen to records back then and Foreigner was the group that we both agreed on their music being great. We have very different tastes in music these days, me being pretty picky about what music I like, while he loves all types of music. I never really liked being in big crowds, nor did I have the money to buy tickets for concerts, but he literally LOVES any size of concert or live music venue. He told me two years ago he was trying to read his record for how many live concerts he attended in a year. He was planning to see 50 concerts that year. Unfortunately, a couple concerts were cancelled and although he added more, he only made 49 gigs that year. Lol

"Feels Like The First Time" (of course along with a multitude of others) was as monumental as any first hear song of that time could ever be. It stands at the pinnacle with some but very few songs like "More Than A Feeling" and Lou as the top tier vocalist right there in the small group of about 4 maybe 5 other singers that would not be debatable as the best of the best. And yes there is no "Foreigner" without the vocals, blood, sweat and tears of Lou Gramm. I'm so glad he's become a Christian now as well. Just love the voice and the soundtrack he's helped write on our lives over the years gone bye. What a classic and classy guy he is. He knows what love is.... just ask him.

I never thought it was about sex, more about falling in love in such an amazing way that it made earlier "loves" pale by comparison and the thought that any future "love" will never compare ("like it never will again, never again"). I had one such and lost it and later realized it wasn't real and he was not who I thought he was. I still don't think I will ever feel that totally amazing way about another person ever again. Yeah, it made me a bit of a cynic, but I still love this song and the passion with which Lou sings it.
