For today’s installment, we are rewinding back to 1985 to cover a song that is an indisputable classic… that not only conquered America, but fittingly, the planet. From Tears For Fears’ Songs From the Big Chair, it’s Everybody Wants to Rule the World. For fans familiar with TFF’s first album The Hurting, there was a palpable excitement building for their next offering. Most of these fans however, lived somewhere other than America. That’s because here on the States The Hurting flew under the radar, stalling at #73 on the Billboard 200. Additionally, the album’s singles were more or less no shows on the Hot 100 Still, the British-born duo of Roland Orzabel and Curt Smith had high expectations as they finished Songs From the Big Chair. After all, on their side of the Atlantic, The Hurting had gone to #1 and kicked out three Top 5 singles. It was like night and day.
Roland noted there were important similarities between the two albums, but he considered Songs From the Big Chair to be much better record. It was more mature and more representative of them as people… steeped with humor, sarcasm, and cynicism. And whereas ‘The Hurting’ was quite insular, Big Chair projects outward, adopting a much larger world view.
And in that spirit of expanding perspective, it was Songs From the Big Chair that introduced TFF to America… launching their career into the stratosphere. The album was worth more than a king’s ransom, selling in excess of 10 million albums worldwide. And according to the RIAA, at least 5 million... - Розваги

This is not a song it’s an anthem of the 80s. I could not imagine the 80s without it. Psych is one of my all time favorite shows. God I loved it when He made that cameo.

I saw them for the Sowing the Seeds of Love album tour, and they were - every inch of them and every note of every song - truly fantastic. Great talents and great performers!! “Pale Shelter” and “Mad World” are still my faves though I do love “sowing the seeds of love” as it’s a lush McCartney-esque tune. Also the much later “who killed Tangerine” - another gorgeous song!
'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' makes me feel like the 80's wrapped into one song. Not lyrically, but musically. It's what 80's prog was at it's finest.

It became kind of a philosophy or synopsis of the 80's and beyond for what many people (old Yuppies) strived for.

@keefp07 Growing up with progressive bands like Rush, Pink Floyd, Kansas, the Moody Blues it's a hard stretch for me to consider Tears for Fears progressive. While I appreciate their place in music, I would consider them more new wave/ pop.

I’m a 1968 baby. I was raised on great singer-songwriters, Europop, Country Rock, Disco, Punk, and New Wave in the 1970s through my early years, followed by the great performers of the 1980s. Good times!

When this song was peaking in popularity here in the US, I took my first cross-country hitch-hiking trip, thumbing rides from San Diego, California, home to Minneapolis, by way of National Parks: Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Badlands. I have loads of memories from this trip, which I shared with dozens of people that I, of course, have never seen nor heard from again. I don' have anyone, other than myself, to reminisce with about it. I had -- and still have! -- a little Sony Walkman FM radio. There were few places where I could not find a station somewhere on the dial, and this song was so ubiquitous that it instantly takes me back to that trip. Along with Til Tuesday's 'Voices Carry', and Howard Jones' 'Things Can Only Get Better'. There were plenty of others, too, but these, for whatever reason, rise to the top of mind.
(By the way, a few years later, I hitch-hiked home from Alaska. In my tens of thousands of miles of thumbing, I only ever got a ride once from someone who I KNOW meant me harm [though a couple more were iffy], and being very large, I got him to let go of that idea. Most people were just lovely, but I think I would have disappeared into the woods after some rough treatment if I had not made it clear that that wacko would have trouble with me. [Besides being large, I had a knife in my hand by the time he became a clear threat, but he never knew that]. Good times [mostly!])

Songs From The Big Chair is one of the Top 10 albums of all time. There's not a single bad song on it and they're all genius. I agree, Professor, that all of the songs are just life-affirming and exactly what we want from music. It was important to me to introduce music to my kids because it's a language that crosses all generations and brings us together.
EWTRTW was my younger son's favorite song. He told me the opening chords just made him smile 😊 I told him that was true for me, too. He's since passed due to a genetic disorder, but now this song not only makes me smile because of how much I loved it as a teen and the fun memories with friends it inspires, but it also reminds me of what I shared with my own sweet boy❤.

Love the way TFF supported unknown artists! They came to KC and heard Oleta Adams playing at the lounge where I worked. They invited her to join them which lead to her own albums and her song “Get Here” which became an anthem of military families during the Gulf War.
She was a great singer!
It's ironic that this is one of Tears for Fears' best known tracks, yet they originally didn't want to record it, thinking that it would flop. The opening notes still send shivers up my spine.
I was living with my boyfriend when the song came out, and he was lead guitar in a rock band. He loved this song but especially the opening guitar riff. He practiced and practiced until he nailed it, but the other guys in the band didn't want to cover it because it was "lame". They must have been looking in a mirror at the time and got confused about what is truly "lame".
This song is iconic! Even now, when I heard that guitar in this video, my scalp started tingling. Few things can do that to me! Some I can't mention.
Well, it did "flop" in appealing to us boring ol' cranky adults, hee hee. Their producer called it!

For me the first few notes of this and the first few notes of Whitney Houston's "You Give Good Love" are the iconic sounds of the summer of 1985.
This was the song that introduced me to Tears For Fears when I saw it on Friday Night Videos and just loved it. Many of my friends saw it too and basically said the same thing. Could not help but sing along when you heard it on the radio, back in the day.
I am a high school teacher and try to educate my student in good music as well as everything else I teach. TFF is a band I frequently share in class. Any time I mention them to a student and I get a puzzled look I play this song and they ALWAYS know it. Everyone knows this song. I 100% agree that this song defines the 80’s and I’d go a step further and say TFF is the definitive band that defines that era. I saw them for the first time in concert a couple years ago and it has got to be my favorite concert I’ve been to. I hear their music and I’m overwhelmed by nostalgia so thick I could swim through it.
It’s a really good song, but I wouldn’t go on to say it’s the definitive song of the 80’s, and TFF isn’t even close to being in the top 5 maybe top 10.

@@TBishopDean It is subjective. I think the Smiths' How Soon Is Now might be one of the definitive songs of the 80s along with this song. I would throw in a couple of The Cure's songs as well.

What is left to say... this song... wow... for every kid in America who grew up in the 80s... this song still lives and generates it's magic deep down in our DNA. It activates again every time those first notes fire up. Amazing.

Agree. I turned 14 at began high school the same month MTV launched. Going from a predominantly Black junior high to then becoming one of a few to attend my private high school was big, but cool, easy, and great to assimilate. My music tastes were wide being a sax player. I related to Rock lovers because I transposed guitar parts 6 horn. I couldn't figure out how to play guitar. I admired the guitarists who were self taught like EVH, SRV, and my favourite Neal Schon. I loved every minute of my 80's years. Music was great, movies were epic, and concerts were all of that and extremely affordable! Times were loose and relaxed for everyone to simply enjoy life
and each other.

We were helluva lot better off than we are now. The economy was roaring out of "malaise" and we were WINNING the Cold War and making things better for so many people in the world.
We can't say that now.
So opposite of today with the sub par music being forced down teens throats because they have nothing else. Not like in the 80s and 90s when the creative spark and genius flew high and the teens on up to 40s loved the music and cherished it.
The 80s gave us music that still holds up today and gave us artists that were pure talent like in the 60s. both decades sparked incredible music and we have not seen anything near that again.
Loved this song when it came out and still love it today...it always feels like a musical breath of fresh air...and the lyrics!...the philosophy of Nietzsche wrapped up in a 4 minute pop song!!!

1985 was musically defined by me as Songs from the Big Chair, Hunting High & Low, and Go West. I wore out the tapes, and bought them all on cd. I still listen to them regularly.
This is one of my favorite songs from the 80s. I loved the two chords ... the lyrics, shout-singing it the car. Chris Hughes was a genius.

I was program director at a small market radio station in Santa Maria California. I talked to the promotion directors from the major labels every week and was always looking for ways to scoop our broadcast competition by adding new hits first. So I went to LA to visit several of the labels to get their take on what new tracks and artists to look for. As I was sitting in the bull pen of the promo department talking to a rep there were new tracks playing that weren't released yet. As we were talking the needle dropped on "Everybody Wants To Rule the World". The opening notes caught my ear - what a great hook right of the bat! And the the bouncing beat got me moving in the chair. Our conversation stopped and the rep said, "This is really good huh? " I said, "Yeah, who is it?" Anyway, as I left our visit he handed me a copy of the album and invited me to take it home and play it. We added it to the playlist as soon as I got back to the station. I can't tell you why, but something about that song cut through everything else we were previewing and we knew it was a hit. And that's how we programmed local music radio back in the day. How weird to learn so many years later that it almost wasn't released. Thanks for the memory.

I watched the movie Real Genius a lot growing up and every time I watched it I would watch through the credits too, though at first I didn’t realize why. Then one day I realized, it’s that song, I love that song. 30+ years later I still consider it my favorite song of all time. Thanks for covering it.

I grew up in the 80s (born in 76) and thank God for KROQ in southern California. We were introduced to all the best music of the time! I can remember my older brother Erik playing his radio in his room and me listening to Depeche Mode, The Cure, Oingo Boingo etc... Man I miss those days! It's amazing how many times that story has been told. "We hated it," or "we needed another track for the album so we put something together in the studio last minute and recorded it on the spot. I didn't like it much but to this day people come up to me and ask about that song." It's a strange phenomenon when people don't hear what millions wind up cherishing.

I was born in the 90s and grew up listening to 70s, and 80s songs for the influence of my parents. Definitely, I would put this on a pedestal. It's something I can't really explain about. Seems like this song is the 80s is musically, but transcends every time with a mix of past and future.

I fell in love with their voices, lyrics, style, everything just from this song. The rest of their songs just backed that up. This song brings back good memories for me; it was my favourite song of that year, and was all over the radio while I was taking spring and summer courses to finish my bachelor's degree. I still have the 45 that I bought at the time.

Great episode, I've been obsessed with this song since the first time I heard it probably some time in the 90s as a kid. It never gets old, I've heard it hundreds of times and each new time it comes on, it's still as exciting and fresh as it was the first time I heard it
This song brings back some serious memories. I had been in bootcamp for 2.5 months and had not heard any music for that stretch of time. This was the first song I heard when I had the chance to listen to music. Those were some good times back then.

TFF is one of my favorite bands - brings me back to the amazing 80's - Just saw them at Bethel Woods NY - and they are STILL amazing - still rocking and their new album is SO GOOD!

I will always like the video for “ everybody wants to rule the world” Yes it brings me back to that wonderful year. Tears for Fears were so deep lyrically and musically. Funny how Roland thought this heavyweight was too lightweight. Songs from the Big Chair was my favorite album from 1985. Great episode professor!

This song is the 80s. Absolutely best song of the whole decade. To this day....Everytime I hear this song I crank it up. I will still sit in my car and sing along....living in LA area in 80s..The video on MTV only added to this songs greatness. This is the best song of the 80s...😊😊❤❤
I just got home 31/2 hours ago after the first night of the Life is Beautiful Festival and watching the Killers. Tonight is Kendrick Lamar. 10 weeks straight 2 concerts a week. I'm nearing 550 concerts I have been to. Damn Life is Beautiful 😍

I love that you have the original album cover of The Hurting in the background.
It wasn't just a song, it was the greatest symbol of the way we were: all our dreams, hopes, and the way we perceived the world...all condensed in almost 5 minutes. One of these tracks that define a lot of generations (not just one). I remember that I started to know this song in a very strange way: I used to turn on my radio at saturday night waiting for the biggest hits. In a certain month, from a certain saturday I turned on my radio just in the exact moment when the radio was playing RIGHT THE END of the song, that orgasmic Roland's guitar solo at the end of the song and I remember I thought "What the hell is this!", and it started to happen every saturday (4 saturdays). So I started to follow the sonic footprint of this incredible hit until one beautiful Monday morning at the office I finally caught the treasure. And the song is with me all the time since that glorious morning. Thank you Roland, Curt, Chris Hughes (for putting his attention on this track production) and thank you Professor.....

I saw Tears for Fears the other month with my sister and my oldest niece. It was my niece’s first concert. Such a good time!
"The Working Hour" is a masterpiece, honestly! The whole album actually is.
Thank you for such a great video Adam. It’s one of those classic songs that everyone has a story related to it.
I was riding into the centre of Liverpool with my two children, when randomly my six year old son started singing, really loudly “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. Suddenly, I said to him “Where have you hear that?” And from there on we shared a beautiful little moment of connection where I shared more information about the song and played it to him in full.
I still have no idea where he heard it, but the weird coincidence is, I was listening to the album repeatedly in work the week before this occurred, so he certainly didn’t hear it from me!
SFTBC is possibly the best album of the 80s, it’s longevity being down to it not following the normal conventions of that era, instead of booming production from the likes of Trevor Horn, it opts for a more subtle, nuanced approach where everything has its place and space to breath to digest the songs messages.

I was 5 for all but the first 5 days of 1985. I've occasionally thought that if "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" was Tears for Fears' only hit, I think I still would've been a happy boy. For all of its simplicity, I still always found the song to be like a universe unto itself.
We did not have a copy of the *Big Chair* album in our household. However, I am convinced somebody we knew did. I was 20 years old when my mother bought me a copy for myself. I listened to it from beginning to end and thought that every single song had been etched into my soul, almost as though I had heard the record when it was out in '85. I would not be surprised if somebody we knew had played the record for us when it was fresh out, even though nobody I talked to you in my family had any recollections.

Hey Adam. I graduated HS in 1985 in Miami. "Everybody wants to rule the world" Classic "Real Genius and Breakfast Club" fare, some of my favorite movies !! I had this record in my record collection during those years. I have this album in my I tunes library today.
I think A-ha's "Take On Me" defines the '80's more than this song

It happens sometimes. In Greece music composer Mikroutsikos for 20 years had in his closet an unbelievable song called Rosa. He didn't like it. A music producer forced him to include it on a record. It ended to be one of the greatest (in my opinion the greatest) songs of it's genre (zeibekiko).

I only just discovered “The Working Hour” and I agree it’s outstanding. I heard it a time or two when I owned the cassette, but didn’t pay it any attention. Now I love it.

I have a special, odd love for Tears. Without trying I seem to hear their music at least once a week, and it always makes me happy when I do. Except one time. I've always associated their music with my childhood in a positive way, it reminds me of Real Genius and happy times in childhood. In 2012 a childhood friend died and nearly my entire friend group from grade school got together, a sort of Big Chill for the 2010's. We were a tight group and most of us ran together through the college years, but not as frequently by 2012. We were in the bar of a restaurant that had been owned by the family of one of us since the early 80s (and sadly closed permanently during the pandemic after 40 years). We had unlimited credits on the jukebox and were playing music of our era, lots of stuff we listened to in high school like Nirvana and whatnot. One friend put on "Rule the World." That opening note that always makes me smile came on and many people sneered and loudly (and drunkenly) were complaining "who put this on?" I was very disappointed in my friends that day. I later brought it up to one friend actually, he was sympathetic and reassured me that he saw one girl there who was into it. I've viewed her as better than the others since.

Sorry but I hated it then and do now. Gross music. They were a joke when I was n high school, rockers back in the day they were laughable! Professor of Rock your awesome but disagree on this one.
I totally understand where you're coming from not well said but yeah the 80's albums should all be burned just like the Beatles when Lennon said what he said or the bee gees when the became linked to disco what a shame I love The Professor of Rock though keep it up cause 97% of your is unbelievable love & peace ✌️ like Ringo says

@ProfessorofRock - Wow, Professor! Your memories of this song almost made me get choked up a little because they were so vivid and painted such a picture of what the song evokes for those of us who grew up in that era. Back then, we usually didn’t know how good we had it, but once in a while (like when we heard this song) we caught a glimpse of what made that time special - even though it was slipping away fast and we could feel things changing and adulthood coming at us too quickly. This song, more than any other, is like a Time Machine for me. It takes me to a time just before life’s circumstances changed a lot and became harder for some of the people I loved most (and me, too). Life changes too fast sometimes. Thanks for doing this video.
