Thought id found a Big Golf Secret so put "upper left arm rotation in golf swing" into YT and Monty was 8 years ahead of me! I've probably spent years of over rotating my body or occasionally my forearms = inside deep and across the line! just like he shows! Ive spent years of effort, counteracting this reasonably well, ive managed to get down to 3 hcp! But with this new move, sub par here i come! I discovered this move in my attempt to feel like i move level not rotate then realised something had to.Early years of stuffing things under my armpits had deadened my upper arms.

This has literally changed my game. I was one of the people trying to hold the face towards the ball in the first few feet of the takeaway and would do exactly as you say, get across the line and steep. Now I feel as though I'm rotating the face off the ball and its so much more effortless and easy to make consistent contact. Thank you!

I searched "left arm lift" & found this video. My biggest problem involves my left arm. I just looked back at one of my swings and saw that my left arm does not lift but turns with my body and stays flat under my sternum. By doing this my turn is deep into my backswing and I get stuck... which then leads to shanks. I don't know why I've never payed attention to my left arm but when I lift, as explained in this video, I can feel my turn is much more compact/coiled. The club feels much more in front of my body and a lot easier to drop it into the slot.
I've tried many band aids for my swing it's frustrating. This demonstration set off a light bulb in my mind and it makes total sense why my flat swing is causing so many problems. Thank you

If I do exactly what this video says I hit fantastic shots! I come back to this instruction time and time again, excellent instruction! Monte is 100% right - keeping the clubface facing the ball is the stupidest instruction I've ever been given and it's taken me a long time to unlearn that. If you let your target arm rotate as shown you also get a golf swing that feels so smooth and very natural. As he says it's how you would naturally hit a ball if it was teed up at waist to chest height.

After a 6 wk. winter break, I played this week. Video showed I was raising up at top of swing and through the swing. I narrowed everything down to left arm rotation (or, lack of). Today, I was able to even hit my bladed irons center of the clubface, compressing the ball and this was on winter grass. This tip is right on point!

I've been trying to lift it vertically but you're saying it should elevate some 35° outwards to make it end up where you want it.

Great video, thanks a ton. I was using the club always pointing at the ball concept and it was a disaster! Left rotation makes a massive improvement and it feels so right. I still struggle with a practice swing that feels fantastic but put me in front of a ball and I default to some ugly hybrid of the two, but I know and feel this is where I need to get to. More repetition without a ball should ingrain the correct movement. Thanks again Monte!

This is awesome. I hate how teachers nowadays (and I mean really good teachers) are always trying to teach no forearm rotation and almost try to teach students to play with a shut club face. I think maybe they are trying to get quick results for their higher handicap students. I get why tour pros want a stable face and don’t ever want to go left, but for us recreational players, we really have about a zero percent chance of over hooking the ball. If you’re over hooking the ball and hitting it in the middle of the face then you’ve got a very enviable problem. Im pretty sure Ben Hogan went from having that problem to being the greatest ball striker the world had ever seen. I’m my experience with my swing hitting like a million golf balls with several different top notch teachers who charge up to $500/hr, the no face/forearm rotation produces an across the line disconnected transition and a steep downswing and will wear the toe out on your clubs

Have just returned from my practice net after trialing Golf Swing Left Arm Rotation and Lift. I have been playing golf for around 35 years, and, never have I heard of this golf tip. If the contact and impact of my practice in the net is a sign of what to expect on the course proper, my weekend won't come fast enough. I have always struggled to get my arms back and in a good position to hinge my wrists. But, just gently rotating my left arm has not only helped me lift the height from a flat back swing, but, I feel in a powerful position to return to the ball. Now for a bit of guidance with the grip of the right hand. Thank you so very much, now who do I see about reincarnation, I want to relive the past 35 years with my new swing!!!!

  • @davidtheobald502

Monte, great video - easy to understand and to the point. Question for you, do you believe the lack of left forearm rotation causes early extension in the downswing? My thought here is that if you are steep you need a way to shallow the club to hit the ball and to do that with the wrong arm position is to stand up out of the shot. Thoughts?

@montescheinblum I have to admit that I’ve always whipped the shaft to the inside like you first explained in this video, and I thought in order to correct it, I had to take away the club with the face super closed, which created massive problems. I just watched this video for the first time yesterday and then went to the range tonight ONLY focusing on left arm rotation and I have to say that I’ve never hit the ball so well in my life. I can’t wait to keep grooving this new feel as I move forward with my game. I absolutely love the way you explain the golf swing man! Monte this is brilliant! ! As the left arm rotates gradually and lifts at the same time on backswing, would it be a correct feeling to describe a down and unwind of left arm on downswing?
I suffer from unwind without down which results in over the top but when I think down and gradual unwind of the left arm it keeps the important secondary tilt for me, I don't block my weight shift and no OTT. Should I continue down that path?

Great vid for understanding and starting to think about what your body parts are actually supposed to do. So here is my issue with this:
When I set up, my left elbow points at the target - so the left arm is already rotated (in its shoulder socket). Then I only turn my chest and lift my arms. No further rotation of my left arm is required. Unless of course you set up with both your elbows pointing at your chest then you would need to rotate the left arm.
Or have I missed something? I agree with the rest of the vid.

@@RollYourRock LOL. Good find. I think I've solved this puzzle over the last 5 years: I still set up with my front shoulder internally rotated, but during the backswing I turn it externally. So on top of the swing the elbow points into the DTL camera.
Vice versa with the trail shoulder: Externally rotated at set up and turning it internally by the time I reach the top.
I love Monte, Gankas and Miyahira because they teach you how to move the specific parts of the body.

ranmangolf Try to search for vids on " the flying wedge" (the Golfing machine's term), that suggests side angles between left and right wrist vs the shaft is not to be changed throughout the swing. You can see the same Stack and Tilt. All is about solid contact, well compressing the ball and draw. Pitching is the same way.

My swing is quite upright with irons and i barely rotate my wrist at all. Good contact results in straight ball flight and massive distance. I hit a Mizuno Comp CT 6i 204 yards off a tiny tee the other week.
I guess my point is, you're coming at this video as if 'XYZ = bad' when that's not necessarily the case. I've been playing 2 months and shoot in the low 90's on a decent day. That's not bad for a rank beginner and as long as the face presents at impact to do what you want to do and gets you the distance you want then there is no 'right' or 'wrong' to me.
Nevertheless i think i'm gonna give this a try and see what it feels like.
