Arm Lift In The Golf Swing

  • Should I lift the arms? Should I keep them passive? Does the shoulder turn elevate the arms? These are all good questions that have been around the game for a long long time. We're going to share our take on the subject of arm lift in the golf and hopefully demonstrate it in a way that you might not have seen before.
    This is an important topic because whatever happens in the backswing normally happens in reverse in the downswing.

    First off thanks for all the material you share freely.
    This topic is just fantastic and i really like how you reset the torso to straight up and down. Can’t wait til you guys continue the discussion and show the downswing portion to see how the arms move back down to impact for the same golfer (if he’s got a non quirky/very generic downswing).

    Mike that's excellent work. Thanks a lot! I recently found the necessity of lifting arms intentionally. This video confirmed my thought. My question is about the timing. Here is my method. The single piece takeaway with body rotation brings hands towards side and pass the back foot, and from there lift arms in a straight-up motion. So basically I break the backswing to two stages - rotate and then lift. Before I always tried to rotate body and lift arms concurrently but consistency was a problem. Sometimes the body rotation is over and sometime it is not enough. It was very hard for me to find the happy medium. But now with this two-stage motion it is easier in terms of timing. I took some videos of my swing from the back. I did not find any sudden change on the directions of the club head. It still travelled in fluid motion. Could you please let me know if I am doing the right thing? Hopefully I made some sense.

      This is exactly why we typically don't like to tell guys what to feel. We much rather show what happens or should happen so you can develop your own feels for that movement... as you've done here. As long as you are getting the club and hands on that elbow plane doing what you've just described, I'd say keep doing it. You've tuned into what YOU need to feel, and more importantly when you need to feel it to make your backswing better. That's how it should be! Great job👊

    Thanks guys! Love the video! Can you do a video on arm drop in the down swing? I have a theory that since your right arm should have a bend in it, that the arms don't fully drop at impact. I am curious that if the arms raise 30 inches in the back swing how far do they drop at impact and at what point do they make the full drop. If you follow Ben Hogans recommended downswing sequence of Hips, shoulders, arms, then hands... Is it possible to show how much the hips and shoulders drop the arms before the arms actually have to independently lower either into ball or post impact? Keep up the great work!

    Arm lift, used to have it, and my friends would say great looking good swing! Devoured the one piece takeaway and practiced in the kitchen, bedroom, queing at the bus station. Grooved it, and my friend said horrible looking swing, bad results. Like a door swinging in the casement. Persevered tried to get more lift in the swing, left arm trapped against my chest. 8 handicapper playing like a 24. Became a student of the flat laid off swing got a BA Honours in swinging flat. Finally someone has flicked a switch. Fantastic tutorial. Now for the hard work, but with a solid conceptual direction. Many thanks. Tom UK

    Thanks for great video. So the arms need to lift right from the get go with shoulder rotation? I suffer from low deep arms and I am a 3 handicap and getting older so I am trying to get the classic left arm on shoulder plane but having difficulty doing it when I'm actually hitting golf balls. Any help would be appreciated. Have to check your site.

    What about golfers (like me) who tend to "overswing" by letting their arms go too far in the backswing (typically causing a CTL with the club)? Moving the arms too much (which is the logical explanation) or is it something else? Been fighting this for years.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому +5

      That's almost always caused by not starting that shift early enough creating the end of the backswing for you... instead, the arms just go back as far as they can, then everything starts down together. That's one we literally see every day.

    • @caseypearce9078
      @caseypearce9078 5 років тому

      @@AthleticMotionGolf thanks for the reply. I've seen you're videos about shifting pressure, but you have mentioned golfers making themselves "lighter" to assist with the pressure shift in a different video. Do you have any videos for that? I've tried the subtle lateral move to the left but i feel like it stacks me on my left side too much.

    How does one determine if they’ve OVER done the arm lift?

  • @djcardwell
    @djcardwell Рік тому

    the arms should lift of course but the hands should stay in-front of the chest. The big thing to avoid is getting stuck on the downswing which happens when you lift your arms without turning your chest because the arms wrap across the body.

  • @richardjohnson-tb5pz
    @richardjohnson-tb5pz 5 років тому +1

    So, if I am lifting my arms 29+ " in the back-swing there is no way they can be pinned to the chest? Also does this imply that I am applying physical force to lower the arms in the downswing?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      Yes.
      Yes, there is an outward and downward force of the hands coming down.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      mikal what are your thoughts about that statement?

    • @richardjohnson-tb5pz
      @richardjohnson-tb5pz 5 років тому +1

      I am no golf expert, but I think that somehow the golf club needs to come down that "money line" that AMG refers to in another video. I suppose that this could be accomplished either with muscular effort or by relaxing the arms and timing the downswing pivot so that it sequences opposing force vectors to lay the club on the correct downswing plane.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf

      Mikal, you make a very good point. Do you believe that the left (lead) arm should be kept straight by extensor (pushing action) of the right (trail) arm?

  • @temporarystranger95

    Mike, I’m really confused. You say in this video that the arm lift was close to 30 inches. However, in another video with you and Shawn sitting down and talking, you demonstrate the amount of arm lift (independent of shoulder turn, if the torso remained completely still) and you said it’s about 9 - 11 inches. Am I going crazy? In this video you say close to 30 inches. I’m really confused.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  3 місяці тому +1

      The 30" shown here is how much the hands travel from address to the top (or lead arm lift). I'm pretty sure we haven't said in other videos that number is 9-11. Maybe you have a link we can reference? But 9-11" sounds like a trail arm number.

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 5 років тому +1

      Well there are many different angles of Elevation, Abduction, Adduction at the Shoulder Joints combined with any Internal and External Rotations; plus the Pronation and Supination of the Forearms.
      Basically, I am asking to see the evolution of Arms and Hands from Address to "At the Top" ISOLATED from any other movements.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf

      Try this... stand in normal talking posture. Take your normal grip with both hands with the handle around waist high. Start lifting your left arm while bending your right arm to about 90 degrees. Stop when you get the hands just above shoulder height. That should be the arm lift minus any rotation.

    I struggled with an inside takeaway my entire life until I realized that arm lift was the problem. I've had multiple video lessons from well known PGA instructors tell me the problem was that I wasn't hinging my wrists to get the club moving up soon enough. As it turns out that advice had me attempting to manipulate my wrists which made the problem worse. Until one day I was thinking about the golf swing and came to the conclusion that the arms HAD to raise in coordination with the turn in order to create the right swing plane. So I simply started raising my arms as I took the club away and until I felt my lead arm on my shoulder plane. The first time I tried it wasn't even at the range. I had to play before I could even hit a few balls to test it. But when I got to the course I decided to just make the change and see what happened. That day I played some of the best golf I'd ever played in my life. Drove the green on the first hole (took it over the trees on a dogleg left so it shortened up the hole) and made birdie. Didn't miss a fairway the rest of the way and at age 67 was driving it about 270 and straight as a string. Irons were the same way. Ended up making 4 birdies on the day (more than I had made in a round in over 20 years!). This is a great video guys and I'm happy to see that you (as experts) have confirmed what I stumbled across. I guess sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!

  • @tipsy09

    Low and slow, to that point where you can’t go back anymore is like for your pressure transfer. Then you lift the arms from that point. That’s your takeaway.

    Riddle me this: What if you didn't try to Rotate your Shoulders and you didn't try to lift your arms? All you did was Rotate your Rib-cage leaving the arms and shoulders to be swung by Core Rotation. Get off the couch and try that. The mindset is, all my arms can do is Rise and Fall and all my Core can do is power the center link of rotary motion? The adjacent links will respond in kind. I will probably get boo-ed for that one, but try it..

    • @s3gts
      @s3gts 5 років тому

      Yes Mikal, absolutely. As Mike is saying if you are only focused on turning your shoulders the arms won't raise. If my orientation is the ball then all my arms can do is raise as I my core rotates away from it. This direct linear arm motion coming from a rotary source. (Rack & pinion if you will).

    • @s3gts
      @s3gts 5 років тому

      Sure, I get it Mikal. If I maintain my Orientation relative to the Ball and where my Proximal Location is, doesn't my Center Link of the Chain effect the Distal parts? The Question for me, has always been: What is the Origin of Motion? Am I Lifting My Arms? Am I Shifting to the the Right and then back to the Left? Am I Turning My Shoulders? What we see with the Gears Motion System is wonderful. But Where does come From? Maybe you know Mikal? If you do, I am all ears. I have no problem with you saying: "Cant make up body parts in order to justify a erroneous hypothesis". It's fine, never to old to learn.

    • @s3gts
      @s3gts 5 років тому

      Oooh I like that response Mikal. Totally agree with chasing down every rabbit hole in search of the holy grail. Balance is maybe #1. You bring up complex chain actions stated above. Take for instance riding a bike. I will refer to a Motorcycle. If your say starting off or parking a bike you would pull the handle toward you in the direction you want to turn, (Pull Left Turn Left) But as soon as you reach a Balanced Speed you Push the bar away. That effects Balance and you Lean the Bike all the way to the rims if your an experienced rider. Is this a complex chain or simply our need to Center our Proximal Location relative to the Applied Forces Surrounding Us. G Force, Centrifugal, Centripetal. People say those Forces are a fallacy but they view it as some Circular Force. It is simple Balancing In to Out, Out to In. So where is this all going? I think we agree more than a perception that we disagree. I feel my swing Originates from my Center. Doesn't mean I'm right. We don't know what the best players feel unless they tell us? Until we are able to see these neurons firing and in what order we are left to measure as we see in the Gears Motion System.

    • @s3gts
      @s3gts 5 років тому

      So how do I answer that? Is the Gears System a waist of time because it is a positional measuring system? Should we not look a pics of Hogan in the Time Life Mag because they don't reflect subconscious activity. I agree that positional training is not my choice but if used as a set of reference parameters than it's fine. Not sure the reader is on autopilot or not best autopilot that they could be. Not my place to tell you what that is either. I suggested to get off the couch and try the Center Link and see how that effect the arms raising.
