Sorry Neil, but at least in Bavaria where I live, it never can mean good morning and such.
It just means Helo and it only is used at lunch time.
It comes from earlier times when people wished each other "gesegnete Mahlzeit!" which mean more or less, "blessed meal" or "God shall bless your meal".
It also is being used negatively in another situation, saying "Na, Mahlzeit!" e.g. in cases you find something quite ugly, or when you disagree totally with something, like "Na, Mahlzeit! Das fehlte mir gerade noch!" which means, "That's just what I need(ed)."

Hey, sorry for my late answer. I normally answer quite quickly. Thanks a lot for this information. That's funny, I have never heard "gesegnete Mahlzeit" or "Na, Mahlzeit". I actually love the sound of "Na, Mahlzeit" though. I guess we can see here how different phrases can mean different things in different parts of the same country. My examples are all Berlin based. Thanks for sharing these examples. I've learned another new thing now. :-)

      :-) It's anyway very interesting...
Well, "gesegnete Mahlzeit" is no more used seriously, just for fun...

Haha I can imagine that the situation was very confusing for you :)
Usually in germany you just answer with "Mahlzeit" if somebody is saying "Mahlzeit" . (Maybe there are some gramatical mistakes inside sorry for that)

Thanks for that. Yes, I realise now that I can answer "Mahlzeit". And no major grammar mistakes in your answer :-) Thanks, Schaumstoffninja Arya.

Mahlzeit sagen wir auch, wenn wir das Büro verlassen, um die Kantine aufzusuchen. Treffen wir dort Kollegen, zu denen wir uns setzen, sagen wir auch Mahlzeit 😅
