arguably the demos of hello neighbour were better since they had a mechanic where the neighbor would learn from the ways you got in before and block them. like chairs would be blocking doors, beartraps in places you ran away, stuff like that. so the game was about finding new ways to get in when the neighbor caught you.

Most correct thing I've ever read. I've seen many games with custom level building modes reference Hello Neighbor. I never really played or watched anyone play it so I just assumed it was supposed to be an amazing game everyone was playing. I finally watched penguinz0 speedrun it, and I was SO confused. I remember thinking "this can't be the game everyone was referencing right??".
Kinda reminds me of undertale, I've seen so many theories, lore analysies, fangames, songs, stuff like that. When I finally played the game myself I didn't see like 75% of what everyone was talking about. The characters have like 2 or 3 lines of dialogue per level lol I was expecting way more than that. I still loved the game but yeah 😅. The difference between the two games is that Undertale is actually good and fun while Hello Neighbor is.. whatever it is.

It's so funny watching Seanie be confused by the lore, not because the lore itself is confusing but because how you're meant to figure it out is stupid. Point A. At the beginning of Act Two the neighbor does lock you in the room but, and ok I know I'm going to sound like I have a brain disease saying this but hear me out, a cardboard cut out of his dead son unlocks it for you but the only way you would possibly know this is if you looked through the keyhole of the door while he's unlocking it. Oh yeah you can look through keyholes it's never explained to you as the player and the feature is never even used for actual gameplay so what is the point. People actually enjoyed this game by the way.

But I'll digress, that's represented in the series WAY better than in the actual games, where the biggest signs of being athletic we get is stretching as an idle animation and just.. running....

    1. main character (MC) is kidnapped by neighbour as a kid
    2. neighbour's house is NOT that extravagant/weird/whatever but MC, being a child, remembers it differently and with "fun" elements (like games n stuff) to try make it less traumatic
    3. shadow guy represents MC's fear of neighbour even though neighbour is no longer there?

There IS a prequel where you play as the children playing hide and seek with stuffed dolls; one hides the dolls, the other finds them while the child who hid the dolls acts as the neighbor does via "catching them" and resetting you back to the start.
The boy, Aaron, steals his sister's (Mya) doll after he's sent to his room during dinner as he stole her spoon and their father got angry at him for it. Aaron sets it up on the roof FOR SOME GOD FORSAKEN REASON and when Mya comes to retrieve it, Aaron accidentally knocks her off the roof.

Hello Neighbor is one of the many indie games that suffered from the publicity introduced from The Game Theorists. The popularity of the channel made it so so many indie devs desperately tried to play 5D chess with the Theorists, ultimately ruining their games. You either let the Theorists do their thing and risk spoiling the game's surprises or you try to out do them and end up with a big mess no one understands.
Then on the other hand you had a bunch of games that were made specifically to bait the free publicity that The Game Theorists brought and cash in on all the Theorists trying to uncover non-existent hidden lore/story.

i feel like "you're a kid who knows their neighbor is hurting someone and you have to take matters into your own hands" and "his daughter died" are good building blocks for a competent horror game plot. add just a few more characters and a little more setup, like a parent who has a good rapport with the neighbor and thinks you're making things up when you try to tell them what you heard. maybe have the story be that he kidnapped a child to try to replace his daughter, this isn't the first time he's done this, and if he catches you, you may be next. ik thats not super original, but it could be spiced up with unique details, and god would it be better than this

This doesn't even fit "it was all a dream" because in that trope it's supposed to be a twist. This is just a dream sequence. Which can actually be done well a lot more easily than "it was all a dream" but somehow they managed to screw even that up. The only thing you have to do to write a meaningful dream sequence is to have it reflect something about the psyche of the person whose dream it is and carry that forward in developing their character. That also means it should almost never be the last thing in a story that happens, because then it doesn't have a chance to play into the drama or characterisation.

I do have a preferred example of the "it was all a dream" twist, which was the one at the end of "the box of delights" by John Masefield, where after the main character, Kay Harker, wakes up, he comments on how he just had a strange dream but can't remember it much anymore, and the events from the start of the book start over again, implying that the whole book will happen over again. Given it's a childrens book about magic, it makes the possibility either that Kay is trapped, or that it was a premonition that he's unable to recall to use, equally suspenseful, making it, at least in my opinion, more like a "it was all a dream, or was it..." but still pretty cool since it doesn't *tell* you, it relies on you remembering. Maybe I'm hyping it up because of nostalgia, but I really liked it, as a child and now. Plus it was pulished in 1935, so i feel that it preceded the wearing out of the trope. Additionally, it makes good use of the verb "to scrobble", which he seems to have coined in the preceeding book, "the midnight folk", and means "to kidnap, or waylay."

One day the neighbor goes in their car to go do something until they crash the car and the wife goes to the hospital and dies. Theodore Peterson comes home and tells the kids and they hug him to make him fell better. One day the son pushes the daughter of the roof and she dies. THEN Theodore Peterson grabs the son and puts him in his basement because he's scared the son will die and puts up missing posters because he's scared that his son would die. In hello neighbor 2 there's a guy that saves the son but, someone shoots the guy and then there's just nothing left for the lore.

I know the lore of the game is supposed to be confusing and "deep" or whatnot, but I'm gonna share my take on it anyways.
Neighbor had a loving family consisting of wife, son and daughter. All three somehow died, maybe by car crash and the neighbour's been devistated ever since, trying to recreate his family via mannequins. When that doesn't fill the hole in his chest, he kidnaps a child to pretend it's his own but i guess it somehow escaped. Then the player comes in, a naive child that, at the end of act 1 gets caught and trapped by the neighbor (though trapped really is a questionable word to use here)
Act 2 revolves around escaping the neighbor, leaving the player with ✨trauma✨.
Act 3 and 4 are just about adult us going back and dealing with the horrid things we experienced as a child (aka that being the shadow thing we see represented as our fear) we beat it, wake up from the dream and are cured of our ailments or whatever.
It really doesn't make sense, which is a suprise to no one and frankly, any and all fun the story could provide is just diminished by criptic and undecided lore, puzzles and an Ai that does not deserve the title of Ai in the slightest.

    • @ValkyrieFryea
      @ValkyrieFryea Місяць тому +6

      That would be better than
-Wife dies in car crash leaving him with two children
-Older child, Aaron, the son, accidentally kills his younger sister, Mya, by pushing her off a roof after sticking her doll he stole up on the roof.
-Dad locks up child while claiming both children are missing. The player, Nick, sees him "kidnapping" his bestie and goes to try and save him. Nick ends up getting locked up in the basement until Aaron frees him.
-Neighbor flees the neighborhood (set up for Hello Neighbor 2)
It's also got a book series, a prequel, a sequel and a multiplayer game.

I stopped following Hello Neighbor ages ago. Last thing I've seen since before the full game came out was MatPat talking about how he didn't care to look into the lore of the show despite their desperate attempts to make him do so and Pastra's video essay on the incompetence this game seeps. It is the lowest of low points in mascot horror.

Finding a wrench in a freezer honestly doesn't shock me. My mum found scissors in the fridge once. She had put them in there herself. She was very tired the day prior. 😂 This was over ten years ago, and even to this day we do actually check the fridge just in case we lose anything...even if it doesn't seem like it belongs in a fridge. I myself almost stored a clean plate in the fridge right after taking it out of the cupboard. Stress, tiredness and exhaustion can do things to a person, so I honestly don't blame Neighbour.

I know I already suggested this in a previous comment, but I would love to see you 100% Outer Wilds! It’s a great shorter game with a really cool story and a few different endings! I can’t say to much because of spoilers, but you play as a little alien guy who travels around a solar system solving puzzles in creative ways to learn more about a previous alien civilization! If you do play it don’t google anything about it before playing because it might spoil some really impactful game moments! ❤ Love your videos and sorry you had to suffer though Hello Neighbor for our enjoyment!

The grocery nightmare was actually a lore thing. in the books (yeah) the main character was abandoned by his grandma in a grocery store when he was 3, so he has nightmares of it. I also believe the school mannequin minigame could have been about main character, in the books, not having friends at school; he moved around a lot as a kid and didn't have any.
hello neighbor is a much better franchise as a book series and the show. the games are so bad

I can't even with this game. Nothing about it works. Not the story, not the mechanics, not the puzzles, nothing.
