  • Recently Sony released a new version of the PlayStation 5 gaming console. The exterior differences are restricted to the screw that secures the base in position. At the interior, the major difference is the heatsink which weighs 300 gr less. The million-dollar question: which is better, the older and heavier PS5 or the new one? Watch the video to find out!

[UPDATE3]: Follow-up video soon, with 12 sensors inside PS5 new in all positions and under the backplate/heatsink, to have comparable results with Steve's measurements on the old PS5.

To answer your question directly, more or less yes. It's pretty translucent. As far as I'm aware, the reason why it becomes brighter it's because you're getting a bit of reflection off of the copper planes, which refracts through the fiberglass and makes it brighter. He has provided more evidence that is most probably true with a high confidence level based on the measuring tools and sensors to determine the result. FYI, that's how science work (on a basic level) and led to you using things like smartphones and UA-cam comments.
Instead of Austin who just use do a temperature check on the vents and say "look at this size and look at this change, I can tell is worse than the original". Austin is saying it as a fact to his gullible audience without any supporting data or good supporting data.
I can't be sure if the data are "100%" true but science do not deal with "100%" true. See now this is detailed and a actual reading. I love Austin but he really flipped the cabbage on this one. He honestly should delete the video. For his own good. Most youtubers can get away with being wrong but his video was fake news type of wrong. His follow up video still basically said oh I'm right. I'm sorry your upset. He needs to see your video and go.. Oh.. My bad guys..and we all move on.

The old heatsink has a copper base. The new heatsink is is nickel base? Copper nickel plated base? Or aluminum? I have not found an answer. Even called Sony and could not get an answer.

A bit confused on the temps, as gamer nexsus got much higher operating temps of the SoC and memory modules.

Wouldn't measurement of the heat sinks be just as inaccurate??
Heat pipes direct heat captured by the heat sink before it physically leaves no?
This would be essentially the same as measuring exhaust temps.

It isn't better per se but is on par with the original model, btw I'm really curious in your test how a heatsink that that not only is smaller but they cut out a lot of copper that to my knowledge and I can be dead wrong, but again to my knowledge copper is the best material from heatsinks fallow by aluminum, but if you cut the heatsink essentially you have less heatsink, plus take out the best material for heatsinks " copper" and substitute that with the second best " aluminum " how in hell is " colder"? I was expecting much or less the same performance as far as heat management goes but this is weird to someone who doesn't know much I need an explanation, aka another video because you ain't going to answer me here I assume! Great video btw!

here in australia I have the CFI-1102A (Disc Edition) has the thumbscrew unsure about the internals but I can imagine it's the revised heatsink model. People also need to realise the PS5 only runs "hot / warm " like I'm talking regular PC full load temps on PS5 games. When you play PS4 games it is cool. I literally own the console.

As Cerny said as they approach thermal limits on the soc they reduce clocks..not fan speed this gen..so the system is always within the sony spec/limits on the soc probably lower than what AMD says is allowable for temps..also saw some rumour that they will have custom fan curves for specific games depending on the data collected ..looks like they will allow fan speed to ramp up more than before...all in all doesnt seem to be as bad a solution ...
