If it was easy your dishwasher drain hose might be a bit long, I am finding a long hose is straining my dishwasher, I have caught it making some odd click noises after I switched to a longer hose to do the high loop, so now I am switching back to a 6 inch hose with the breather.
Great video. I have been doing this kind of thing for a living for many years, and I find it helpful for me to attach both hoses to the air gap BEFORE I stick it through the hole in the sink. Every thing else I do the same as you. Best wishes to you!
I was about to go underneath to install the gasket. Your video stopped me from doing that. I installed it on top. Simple and no messing with under the sink.
Hello, recently I purchased Kohler sink bundle with faucet from COSTCO in CA. No opening for Air Gap, and Kohler do not recommend to open any hole on their product. Is high loop only option to connect hose from DW to Garbage disposal? Thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much!! I've got the old dishwasher out now. I'm pretty good with tools and fixing things but the new dishwasher installation is something I've never done before. I had no clue what an air gap is, so this really helps and I'm ready to go now.
Thanks for video. Was getting bad odor from air gap body. Realized the hose from gap to disposal was not sloped correctly and it was clogging. Changed everything out and no issues.
Thank for making it easy! It cost me $15 at Home Depot and 15 minutes to install. One of my twin boys held the plastic air gap through the hole while I came back out from under the sink. Easy install. Cleanup, test with a wash and all is good. Thanks again!
@@iceman846 In some states, and possibly localities, the useless thing is mandated. I've been DIYing for 50 of my 70 years and have not seen a dishwasher blockage that was not in an air gap system. With the flow throttled about 75% in the device, it is certain to happen. When they make one that is not restrictive they will have a winner at last.
Why are soap suds coming out of the air gap after washing dishings?.We just had an air gap installed 2 days ago. We haven't used our dishwasher in years because we needed it fix because it wouldn't drain. We had the dishwasher fixed and air gap installed just a few days ago. After 2 days though soap suds is coming out after washing dishes.
It really helped me to understand what that thing under my sink was that was attached to nothing but a secondary drain pipe (evidently they installed a drain pipe just for the dishwasher apart from the sink drain pipe). Now that I know I am going to remove it since it is not being used at, the dishwasher has a high loop that goes straight to the disposal and it works just fine. Gonna install an air button for the disposal in the air gap hole since the air gap is just sitting there unused and I don't need it at all.
Thank you so much for this video. We are having new countertops put in and they are code in CA. Our contractor said that it's a personal choice but when we sell we don't want to be caught without an air gap that is code.
Sadly, CA is one state that requires them. Maybe somebody will make one that does not cause plugs by restricting the flow 75% (3/4 inch hoses attached to a device with a 3/8 inch orifice), but until now it is what the code requires. Removing the cap and the "top hat" (see 1:40) lets you put a bit of liquid drain cleaner in the larger part that leads to the disposal. Doing that every few months will reduce your aggravation greatly.
I installed one of these but the old gap gasket was at bottom n water was leaking from there, i actually connect both hoses same time before i put air gap
Are used to barbecue wooden skewers to shove down the top of the airgap and it compressed the two clips and once they were collapsed it was easy to pull the thing out of the center.
Thanks, I have a 5 hole sink which is kind of odd. Was looking to replace the faucet and sprayer but had no clue what the air gap was. Much appreciated.
Great video thanks, you are the only person I've seen discuss cutting down the dishwasher hose end from 7/8" to the 5/8" so it can fit on the air gap tube end.
Mo appliances mo problems. I don’t know if we could live with out the dishwasher. These kids burn through some dishes! lol We don’t have a disposal either.
Learned something today lol. I guess my state does require it or didn't after we had to rebuild after being flooded. I was excited for the upgrade to a dishwasher and garbage disposal. 😀 But now with just two of us, I could do without either one. Hope y'all are having a great weekend!
Thank you so much for the thorough walk thru. I was in the process of replacing the faucet and disposal and was curious if I needed this ugly air gap. I researched and found your video and replaced mine since it’s code required. I really appreciate it coming from someone who’s never gotten under the kitchen sink lol.
Worse than ugly, I have never seen a discharge blockage that did not involve the flow restriction air gaps produce. After all, the discharge water is a thin slurry that depends on flow to keep the solids suspended. For decades the "high loop" method worked well, so I suppose it had to be replaced with something that causes a problem.
Definitely learned something new. I never knew about these and my dishwasher doesn’t have one. Great video brother. Thanks for always giving us great information
I went from dual kitchen sinks to a single (disposal and dishwasher), when the new sink was installed they deleted the vent. A few days after the install my sink began randomly making a gurgling noise, it doesn’t back up or anything. I wondering if the deletion is the cause or maybe the Ptrap is not set up correctly.
@@ThatFixItGuy I hear it in the drain, if I put the drain plug in for few minutes it stops, that’s why I thought it had something to do with venting. It’s just weird.
question! why don't you connect disposal hose and dish washer drain hose to the air gap before put it into hole on the sink?? just wondering, will that be much easier to tighten up?
Great idea and I totally could have. I don't because a lot of times the hoses will have to be twisted and can't be secured anyway till everything is put in place. If did you end up putting it in that way? I will give it a shot the next time I run across one. Thank you.

The draining pipe past the air gap or the common outlet between the two dishwashers aren’t clogged either. I cannot use separate air gap for each dishwasher since sinks offer only one hole. What should resolve this? Thank you.

It's hooked up to watwr disposal but when dishwasher is on doing something then water starts leaking through the bottom of water disposal?? Do I need to put a plug on on water disposal and just hook up the drain hose somewherelse?
That was a good video thanks. My question is my air gap has water coming through it so I changed mine out to a new set up because the other air gap broke on top from being very old. I found that my house from dish washer is backed up with some debris. So how do I go about fixing that. Thanks
So if you have a new sink with no hole for the air gap, do you cut a hole or do you simply run a high loop? (Brand new dishwasher, so I know it has a backflow valve.)
