    Hey, Sal! I'm just a Norwegain woodworker, and apart from owning a 26' sailboat I have nothing to do with the sea and maritime business, but your channel is so d***ned interesting that my knowledge about what's going on on the seven seas has grown exponentially since finding your channel. I can't help but feel it's like with the public school system. You defund it, complain that it's failing, and use that as an excuse to reduce funding further and promote charter schools. In this case, complain that the woman isn't able to handle a systemic sexual abuse issue, and use it as an excuse to remove women from the military, starting with her. Cause we don't have access to her service records, do we? No, all we have access to is Mr. "Grab 'em by the pussy," the Felon-in-Chief himself, and his squad of fascist sycophants complaining about women being in ANY position of power!

    • @Archangelm127
      @Archangelm127 10 днів тому +5

      No. It's the Gulf of Mexico. Let me explain why.
      America (both the continent and the country) have a truly vast coastline. Calling a body the "[whatever] of America" really doesn't narrow anything down. By contrast, when you say "Gulf of Mexico," it tells everybody right where it is, since there's only one side of Mexico that qualifies, geographically.
      Also, I don't think the President has any such authority to rename geographical features unilaterally. It's not like the Gulf is US territorial waters or similar.
      Also also, it's a dickheaded, jingoistic move that will do nothing but confuse people and antagonize our biggest trading partner.

      Trump is a bully who thinks it is a great negotiating tactic to start by issuing threats. That is why he has no real friends. Only people who thinks they can get something from him (like Elon) and an enormous cult who fawns over every word he says and worship the ground he walks on. If you are a cult leader, cult members are not your peers and therefore they don't qualify to be friends.
      We don't negotiate with friends by starting off threatening to hurt them. This scares your enemies, but it also scares your other friends. And soon, they're all no longer friends. Trump is wasting all the goodwill we built up over the decades. Trump doesn't realize how much damage he is doing. Imagine you are CEO of a medium sized company. Hey Sal, great content, keep it up. Perhaps worth investigating the rise in food prices that will occur due to the 'illegal' farm hands being deported meaning food will soon be rotting in the ground and falling on the trees (as things are going, the US will soon have to import orange juice if all the orange pickers leave town), plus good imports from Mexico/Canada include large amounts of food (can shipping cope with increased food imports - capacity limitations), wind doesn't produce plastic and its derivatives (that can only come from oil), tariffs will delay everything through customs, how to deal with low water levels in Panama (will they restrict shipping), do we have enough ISO containers, dock capacity, trained crew, drivers to cope with an increase in shipping when problems do hit, and who is doing the mitigation planning for worst case scenarios and are the measures good enough, or will it be the highest payer wins approach? Lots to think about in the future, it ain't plain sailing by any measure in the future.

      I agree. The "Big Ask" of demanding the return to US control, I think, will lead to a negotiation and agreement to the stationing of US Security Forces in the "Canal Zone" as it used to be, to ensure that the canal remains safe for maritime traffic, including and especially USN units moving between ocean commands.

      @@karlbrundage7472 so the US army is going to be occupying another country forever. We're creating another Gitmo situation? Come on. Let it go. There was a reason Carter signed that treaty although he campaigned against it. People blamed Carter for signing that treaty, but that treaty was ratified by Congress. AND negotiation was actually started by Nixon. Nixon, Ford, and Carter had a good reason.
      We aren't at war with China right now. China isn't destroying the canal. They're using it. But the way things were going in the 1960s and 70s, the Panamanians themselves were going to sabotage themselves. The Canal Zone just by itself is not sufficient to keep the canal running. It requires an enormous amount of water which comes from the lakes and dams. To control all that, along with the catchment area to keep those dams full, we practically have to control the entire country.
      Nobody wants to live under occupation for all eternity. We don't want it. Nobody else either. Attempting a permanent occupation would ultimately result in an enormous own goal, with the canal open to everybody else BUT us. THAT was why 3 Presidents from both parties were eventually convinced that the treaty was the best solution.
      The Panamanians themselves keep the canal running. We get some special privileges. And we do nothing. We don't need to occupy it, which saves a lot of money because occupation is expensive. How much of the current debt is from attempting to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan, and what have we got to show for that? Just 5% of Iraq's trade today is with the US. Guess who is #1.
      I don't even care if China runs the canal itself instead of merely ports at either end. It doesn't matter oif China owns 95% of Panama's economy. So long as they don't station actual military units. IF they started closing the canal to American ships, THEN we invade. Marines can be there in 2 days. Threatening to invade now is insane. They haven't even done anything yet. The possibility of the threat is what keeps them from trying anything funny. I don't know what we are trying to do here. A permanent occupation is pointless and expensive. The troops will rile up the locals and cause problems.

    My first time here as I live in the Great Lakes area and follow shipping related issues of this region. The import-export trade brings foreign ships across the Atlantic, through the St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal with a variety of products and usually ends with them loading grain products from Duluth/ Superior or Thunder Bay, Canada to deliver in European countries. The Soo Locks are essential to this trading and, like many Americans and Canadians, I'm watching the progress of the building of the 3rd. Lock. So Trump fired Admiral Fagan for failure to address Fentanyl smuggling? My understanding as a layman in border issues is that people, mostly US citizens, are smuggling fentanyl across our southern border. Our southern LAND border. I don't see how the Coast Guard is responsible for a border that is not a coast. But then I don't have Trump's especially sharp mind for geography.
    BTW, I assume the fentanyl smuggling has stopped by now. Surely such an important problem is one that Trump fixed on day one. I mean he wouldn't have fired the head of the Coasties unless he had a better plan. One that he couldn't just tell the her to implement. Or maybe, and I'm just spitballing here, but maybe it was really just because she is female and female don't belong in positions of power? Or in the military at all, as Hegseth has repeatedly said.
    Trump and his cabinet nominees make me think of some kind of real life Legion of Doom. He is like a supervillain assembling all of the most despicable criminals to serve as his henchmen. And to be honest, his management style is most like a mob boss. Mafia Don....Don Donald. It has a ring to it.

      Secondly, Trump's clearly not a sexist, he has lots of women around him that he had placed in positions of power.
