  • Video on a exhaust idea i came up with (probably not the 1st to do this), using two 5HP mufflers on a opposed twin Briggs and Stratton. Thanks for Watching!!!

    I did something similar on a 20 hp opposed twin, except I used a 90° threaded coupling for each pipe. Worked pretty well

    It'd be pretty cool to see it done like the dual exhaust on a car, where there's an H pipe connecting the exhaust from the two cylinder banks; it helps smooth out the pulses and make the engine sound better and less "poppy". You could do it here by cutting your elbows in half, threading the cut ends and installing tees to connect the two pipes with a couple of nipples and a union, then screw the mufflers into the tees.
    Like this:
    E E
    |----+----|
    | |
    M M
    E = exhaust port
    + = union
    M = muffler

    I have 3 of those engines. 18hp, 19.5hp and a 20hp.......They are AWESOME engines. The 20hp is the Industrial version. I run the 3 screw fuel pump with adjustable low idle mixture.

    I just screw the mufflers directly into the head then shape and weld the pipes to them, that way you can get more creative . I have about 17 of these engines. I like them better than the OHV V-Twins. They sound so cool.

      +Robert Perrigo That is a good idea too! wow! 17!!! I have 2 of these, this 19.5 and the 14HP on my Montgomery ward. I have several 12HP and 11HP single cylinder flatheads though. I agree with you, I much prefer these, not that the V twins are bad, i just prefer flatheads. Thanks for Watching!!!

      +Anthony Browning I'm old school, I like the more simple setup, I've had much more luck with flatheads then OHV, valves always backing off, or problems with the compression release, alot of stuff like that. But Don't get me wrong, OHV's are great motors, I like them too, just not as well as flatheads. With my experience, i've found flatheads to be more reliable overall. Thanks for Watching!!!

    You should connect the two with a section of tubing. This will create a H exhaust. The H shape will create a scavenging effect in the exhaust. Witch will help with performance.

    Go to a muffler shop that you know and make some custom pipes going to the back of the mower you gonna put it on and put cherry bombs in the pipes somewhere in the middle. Should sound good ~!~!

      Thanks! I didn't, i bought it that way, go to the electrical department at lowes or home depot and you can find that there, for this engine its 3/4" pipe thread, for single cylinders (like a 12Hp flathead) its 1" pipe thread. They do have a good sound! Thanks for Watching!!!

      fnaguitarplayer9 Sure. Don't know exactly what the carb came off of but it bolted right up to the 19.5/20. No difference in bore size much but with that killer engine it's vastly ovcerpowered anyway. I just needed it to idle down so I could back a trailer. Wished someone would make a kit to re-jet the non adjustables.

      I hear ya, it might be the same as my 14 has on it. can't beat these engines. I know right, you would think they would. you can though, if your brave enough (never have done it myself) to drill them out, i've heard of it being done, but you have to be careful not to take it to far!

      sounds like a bad key switch or solenoid, you can (carefully) take a screwdriver across the 2 posts on the solenoid, if it cranks then, you either have a bad solenoid or a bad key switch. Possibly a bad starter, if it still doesn't do anything when you cross it. Just be careful it will spark alot and can weld itself to it. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Do these engines just have a natural knock sound to them? I have an '87 12.5 that has an "almost knock" sound, but otherwise runs great.
    Sounds great!

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  8 років тому

      +GT Nut I wouldn't say a natural knock, but they are known for valve noise, like lifter tick, etc. The upper cylinder is the one that people will have problems with throwing rods, or problems of that sort, because its harder for the oil to get to it. It might just needs some valve work done to it, if not, then it may be a rod knocking. Now some single cylinders will have a knock at idle, usually do to play in the synchro balancer. Thanks for Watching!!!

    Thanks for the video and good idea, think I'm gonna try it!
    I just bought a 2000 model Briggs Twin ll 17hp opposed twin I/C engine that I want to mount on our Snapper RER. Can you tell me if the mounting bolt pattern is the same as on a '97 Briggs 11.5 hp flat head? Also, this engine has 3 wires coming from under the flywheel, a black w/red stripe, a yellow and a white. I'm assuming at this point that one of them is to run lights? Also, do these engines have fuel shut off solenoids? Trying to figure out what I'm gonna have to do to mount and wire this thing up.....

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  7 років тому +2

      Your welcome! i hear ya! No the opposed twins have a different bolt pattern. however some frames will have 2 sets of holes drilled to fit other engines, my test frame which is a old murray frame has the other set. You should have 2 wires that are usually together, one is for charging, one is for lights, the 3rd wire is probably the shutoff wire. i don't think these motors ever had used a fuel solenoid, i haven't seen on yet that had one on it. hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!!!

    • @bodeine454
      @bodeine454 7 років тому

      fnaguitarplayer9 I got the engine mounted and running. I had to make a new mounting hole template and drill new holes cause I wanted the carb, exhaust etc to be on the back of my Snapper instead of the front for easier access when I need to work on it. I put a brand new starter on, the original had a burnt wire on the armature. Also gave it a new air filter, plugs and a new battery. I'm getting ready to head to Lowe's to get the elbows and mufflers. I also need to get a longer throttle cable, 53" is a tad short. I noticed that the engine started surging while I was cutting grass, I had to run it with open pipes cause the muffler that came with it won't mount on this mower without making a new bracket. Not sure if this has anything to do with the way it's been running but I adjusted the governor and it ran good for awhile and started surging again. I re adjusted it and tighten the nut more thinking I didn't tighten it enough the first time. It runs better but it seems to idle too fast. Even if I adjust the idle screw down the governor takes over and won't allow it to idle down like it should. The only thing I knew to do was bend the governor spring tab in some and that helped but I had to bend it quite a bit. Something just doesn't seem quite right about the way it idles, maybe I need to get a longer governor spring, or a looser spring. Not real sure what to do, I've never had this issue before but I've never had a twin engine before either. I'm still trying to figure out what to do. Other than that, the mower cuts real good !

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  7 років тому +1

      I hear ya! I had to add a spring on this one, it wanted to race for some reason when i first got it. Usually surging is from the gov out of adjustment or to lean of a mixture, if the carb on yours has a mixture screw it might need to be turned out. It might smooth back out once you get some mufflers on it providing some back pressure.

    • @bodeine454
      @bodeine454 7 років тому

      fnaguitarplayer9 Thanks, yeah, I'll figure it out eventually...This one has the 4 screw fuel pump. I don't believe it has the mixture screw adjustment. Maybe I just need to clean it real good and maybe rebuild it. It's the one that's expensive to rebuild, about $30 on eBay. I think it's leaking a little gas between the carb and intake manifold, maybe it's sucking air. Anyway, what city and state are you in? My wife watches a lot of your videos with me, she likes this kind of stuff.... Wouldn't let me start it for the first time unless she could be here to hear it. We live in Owensboro, Ky originally from Middletown, Ohio....

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  6 років тому

      the fuel pump is in the front of the carburetor, there will either be 3 or 4 small bolts holding it together, you will probably need to get a new diaphragm and gasket for it, you may be able to revive the old one enough to get it running by soaking it in wd40 to soften but they usually won't last when you do that, but at least you should be able to get it running. I would suggesting getting the carb kit and taking it off and cleaning it real good too. Thanks for Watching!!!

    • @fnaguitarplayer9
      @fnaguitarplayer9  8 років тому +1

      First thing I do on ones without spark is if its a newer one without points and condenser, then i disconnect the shutoff wire on the coil and check for spark again, if you got spark then you have a wiring problem, if still no spark and the magnets are good on the flywheel, bad coil, If its the older type with points and condenser, then most of the time that is the problem, just need the points cleaned. If there is a excessive gap between the coil and flywheel that can cause it as well. Thanks for Watching!!!
