This Craftsman rider with an opposed twin engine was hard to start and sometimes wasn't getting gas to the carb. I found out it didn't have a fuel filter so installed one, but at the same time spent the $5 and put a fuel pump on it which I show you how to do in this video. Now it starts right up and is ready to sell!

You're correct the 4-screw carbs are the Nikki carbs, put a rebuild on mine last April including new fuel pump, definitely fixed my intermittent idle issues. Same engine as well, B&S Opposed twin 19.5hp, 1999 Craftsman mower. When I had an odd starting issue I removed the red top & exposed the flywheel, had light surface rust so sanded all around the sides w/some 180 grit sandpaper. Really cleaned up nice & exposed the 2 main contact points the ignition coil looks to, helped the starting issue but ended up putting on new ignition coil & no issues since. From my experience with the BS opposed twin & everything I've read, just keep up the maintenance & they'll last. Mine's 20 yrs old this year, doesn't blow any smoke & starts just like yours in the video. Nice video & best of luck on the sale!!

Thanks for sharing your experience, these opposed twins are great. Had one with a bad coil last week along with partially clogged jets in the fuel pump. They have their gremlins but yes they don't smoke and are very powerful.

Some guys bypass these fuel pumps but i like making them stock again. Good work. Your spilling gas like me. I swear those B&S twins are the best small engines made. Start it cold the next day as us old guys say.

The Briggs opposed twins are excellent Bruce. Fought spark issues with one last week but think I finally got it sorted. Replacing the original pump is cheaper than bypassing it and putting an external one on it so trying to keep it original. Worked 20 years that way so why not keep it the same?

Those opposed twins are awesome engines! Some of the best engines Briggs made IMO. Have you ever tried compounding and waxing any of those oxidized metal hoods & fenders? Wonder if they’d come back to life with a little work from a D/A machine (or a little elbow grease if you don’t have a D/A). Just finished another Toro today and compounded / waxed it, looked like the day it rolled off the line when I was done. Got the full asking price no haggling.
