Dear Sir. Nice video. Only in the CAF, we are not issues the No# Survival knife. We are issued the #3 boat knife with the jump sheath. That being said, I know a bunch of guys that carried the #4 as “personal” issue. Cheers
I already own an old #1 Belt Knife (carbon) that my father owned since the early 70's, and a #100 Large Skinner (stainless) I bought about ten years ago. The Large Skinner is my favorite hunting knife, and I have quite a few. I just picked up a #4 Survival stainless with micarta scales and overflap sheath last week. Looks to be a great general purpose knife that'll be just about impervious to the elements. Grohmann makes great knives at reasonable prices; I wish there were more Canadian companies like them to support.
I have the #1 Belt Knife (and a fillet knife) from Grohmann and haven't looked back. Great all around general-purpose knife. I was on the fence between this #4 and the #1 for over a year before I finally decided the added size wasn't critical for my needs, nor worth the extra bulk. But really the profile and function are so similar I'm sure that either one is very comparable to the other.
No worries my friend. A lot of guys to carry them as personal issue. We love our No#3 but if you got really big hands the No#4 fits a little better. Cheers.
I actually got issued 2 No3's, a FE or Field Engineer Knife, and a jump knife. They are both the same knife. The No 3 was issued to Combat Engineers and Airborne Regt, but the number 4 was actually issued to aircrew survival students. I bought one of those No 4s years ago, and it is my favorite knife. Get the military style flap sheath; much better all around.
The knife is great. The factory sheath is horrible. The brass button tab snapped off when I got it out of the box. The actual knife is great though. Plan on replacing the sheath.
guitarfan It might be worth contacting the factory for a replacement. Out of the knives that I have seen there has never been a problem with the sheath.
Quitarfan. The brass button is replaceable. Tandy Leather and Hobby Lobby sell them. In fairness to Grohmann, they probably didn't make the brass button. I believe there are also stainless ones available. If you look on the backside of the button, there should be a slot to remove it with a screwdriver. For about $1-1.50, you're back in business.
I just bought an R4S with micarta handles and overlap sheath for $105.30 CDN, free shipping. Grohmann's current MSRP on this knife is $158.25. Bargain.

Awesome! They do have a unique design and the Survival model is based off the original knife, both are very nice knives.
Thanks for the comment!!
Great video! I have the NO.2 It's a great fixed blade! I prefer folders however, Grohmann makes some nice ones!
They definitely do!
The CAF doesn't issue the No#4 Survival. We're issued the No#3 Army knife. Cheers.

I agree. The problem described is certainly NOT typical of Grohmann quality, and you should contact the manufacturer.
