Can you give tips on writing a personal statement? I’m applying to uni too but idk where to start lol
start off w a paragraph talking about why you’re passionate about the subject, link it to a broader theme like society, morality, ideology etc. avoid language like ‘ever since i was a child’ they want to know why you’re interested with that subject *now*.
then do a paragraph on further research you actively do on your subject, books, essays, documentaries etc. talk about specifically what they explored which was personally interesting and try and link it directly to the uni course (eg. if you’re doing english lit talk about how you’ve studied works from a range of historical periods- literally every english course will explore works across centuries) if you’ve studied stuff in class avoid saying you did it at school. just say you’ve ‘explored it’ in general.
then do a paragraph on your other subjects and how it links to the course you wanna do- once again if you were doing english lit you can say you read lolita for example, and studying psychology made you understand the manipulation, or if you studied politics understanding ideology gave you a better grasp on different political literary critiques like communism in 1984 or post- colonialism in the bell jar.
then do a paragraph on other stuff (extra curricular, musical instruments, DofE etc.) and link it all back to your course in a similar way. if you’ve ever travelled talk about how exploring different cultures aided you in your subject, always link it back to a specific area of the course. for example if you’re doing medicine talk about different cultural or religious views on medicine, how dorking with others in dofe or extra curriculars aided to your teamwork skills, and then site a specific medical event in which teamwork was absolutely necessary that you’ve personally researched, or an event in *your* life to do with your subject in which those skills were necessary.
you don’t have to have necessarily done a ton of extra research but do enough that it sounds like you know what you’re talking abt lol, if you don’t have an interview you don’t need to know extra texts and stuff inside out, summaries online are a god send, just make sure you’re passionate abt your subject and that comes across- hope that helped!

I’m from Ireland and am trying to write the personal statement basically from scratch and by myself as we don’t write personal statements in Ireland when applying to uni so there’s like no support or help with it. I’m hoping to study psychology, is there any thing else you’d recommend I do to show my interest. For example should I try and read a book on psychology to further show my passion in the subject? I literally am just trying to guess what is and using relevant lol
@@aisling8092 yes! extra research on your subject is vital for showing you’re passionate, find a specific area of psychology that really interests you and watch some documentaries, read some books etc, and put at least one paragraph explaining everything
this might seem abit random but i literally had no idea where to start so started by writing about my work experience and volunteering. it can really help you get into the swing of writing!
