Very interesting video about the most produced tank in history.I think I'm correct in saying that the T55,like all Russian tanks, does not have a turret basket,so the turret floor does not rotate with the turret. This is why Russian tanks have a much lower profile than Western tanks but it means that Russian tank crewmen have to be constantly aware of where their feet are !.

    • @yoloman3607

T-55s and T-62s have rotating floors, it isn't a problem. T-54s did not.

      T-55 = AK-47
      T-62 = AKM
      T-72 = AK-47
      We don't talk about T-64.

I realize how much of a bear the T-55 was in the 1950s and 1960s, but imagine being it it in the 1980s, going up against Abrams and Challenger tanks.

I’ve often wondered where do you put the fuel into a tank ?

    • @gerdlunau8411

The internal fuel tank is inside the hull at the right hand side of the driver. It is an ammunition rack for the 100mm grenades made from metal sheet, allowing the space in between the grenades to hold the Diesel fuel. In other words the grenades are surrounded by fuel while at the same time being tightly packed.
Therefore the fuel tank itself is a very complex part made from metal sheet.
Combat or travelling rule was that the external fuel tanks to be emptied first. The driver could switch the different fuel tanks from his place.
But still the external fuel tanks as well as the two 200l industrial drums being carried at the rear (not connected to the tank's fuel line system) are located in a way that any fuel coming out of them due to small arms fire bullet holes will flow or drop outside the hull down to the floor and so never enter the tank.
      Peace! from Dresden / Germany

"The last known one of these to be destroyed in battle was 2015" I would give that comment a revision in 3-5 months time as Russia is now starting pull T62's out of storage to use in the Ukraine so it wont be too long before T55's are rolling out

@@Kni0002 You are projecting. Its already been confirmed by the Ukrainians themselves that they are now using donated T-55s. Besides some modernized T62s handed out to militia the Russian army proper mostly uses modernized T-72s along with modernized T-80s and T-90s.

The Soviet Union was the state directly after the Russian Empire so it can be seen as the cultural successor. Thats why both are often used in relation to eachother. When im talking about America you think of the USA, other reasons but the same result.
